WR Ray Small (official thread)

Not much the defender can do when the offensive player is coming at him as much as he's coming at the WR.
In truth, as bad as it was to see Small get concussed, the player who was risking injury to a greater extent was Dominic Jones. Head down is exactly what the locker-room placards preach against doing.

lowering the head and leading with the crown is clean? (im seriously asking)
If he had caught small in mid-air and shot upwards to generate the helmet contact, I'd have a problem with the hit. Troy hung Ray out to dry, so Jones got to Small as fast as he could (which included a little leaning).

i guess its a tough call, it did look clean (in regaurds to i wouldn't want malcom jenkins flagged on such a hit) and i dont think it was done with malicous intent, just a very scary after the hit when his arms were froze, i bet alot of prayers were said at that moment. glad to see him walk off

When Small got up he almost went over to the Minnesota sideline. He def. had his bell rung. I was sitting in 24A and had a pretty good bird's eye.....it looked like a clean hit to me and the player seemed genuinely concerned about Small's condition.

Troy Smith was not the problem on this play, Ginn's missed block is what caused Small to get jacked up. We run WR screen play all the time and in fact that's the same play that Ray SMall scored his first TD on. If i remember correctly it was Ginn who either wiffed on Jones or was going to block on the second level. Either way you look at it, it was Ginn's mistake.

hmmm.. after watching the play a few more times, i think jones just made one heck of a play.

i agree jones made a good play, but troy made a mistake with that ball.. i didnt see ginn anywhere, and it was a hurry up play so it could of been a possible miscommunication, i'll look for it and watch for teddy missing a block but i didnt see it after watching a couple times. it looked more like a swing into the flats then it did a screen but i'll check it out.. the blame falls on troy IMO

I believe Smith had determined before the snap that the ball was going to Small. The success to that play relies on the WR blocking and running off DBs then Small breaking a tackle in the second level. All I know is that the reciever that was up top didn't run his guy off or just didn't block him. Asking Smith to make a better decision on a play that relies on him swinging the ball out fast, was no the problem in my opinion. I looked at Small scoring on that pass a few weeks ago and it looked like hall blocked his man and Robo in the slot ran his guy off. I was actually watching for that play because of the formation and i watched Small the whole way. It just seemed like the DB knew the play the whole way and reacted that way or the reciever up top caused the problem.
