WR Roy Hall (Official Thread)

True, but at who's expense? Santonio Holmes? Ted Ginn Jr? Anthony Gonzalez? Brian Robiskie?

Roy Hall was a good receiver that just got stuck in a numbers game behind three (maybe four?) eventual first round picks.

He saw a lot of action in 04, but did not capitalize (though that can be said of many positions early that year). He was a tough matchup as an 4th/5th wr, but did not make much noise when inserted higher in the lineup. That will hold back any player in the draft.

That's the most accurate assessment here. Hall had opportunities to become a #2 WR, in '04 and '05, but it never happened. Drew Carter was another guy that had a lot of expectations but he came through in '03. The talent was always there but Carter had too many injuries.

Hall monitor
Roy Hall chuckled. Another reporter calling him about Quinn Pitcock.

No, for the record, Pitcock's former teammate with Ohio State and the Indianapolis Colts does not have any clue why the defensive tackle suddenly retired last week at age 24.

"I'll eventually give him a call," Hall said Saturday afternoon. "But my phone is going (crazy) with people calling me about Quinn, so I know his phone must be. His decision was obviously shocking to everybody."

Hall had big-time size (6-3, 240) and potential, but he never really seized control of a job as a Buckeye. As a sophomore in 2004, he was the No 3 receiver, catching 17 passes for 230 yards and a TD, but that was about as good as it got.

For his career, he caught 50 passes with 3 TDs. He was always going to play second fiddle to Santonio Holmes, but he subsequently got passed up by Ted Ginn Jr. in 2004, Anthony Gonzalez in 2005, and then Brian Robiskie in 2006, his final season.

"I never lost confidence in myself, even through a little bit of adversity at Ohio State," he said. "I thought I'd play a lot more. But I'm grateful for what the university did for me, and I used it a platform to the NFL."

Early reports from camp on Hall are good. He's a starter on four of the Colts' six special teams units, and he's battling for the open No. 4 and No. 5 receiver spots. The top three are Marvin Harrison, Reggie Wayne and Gonzalez.

Hall had a couple of grabs in tonight's Hall of Fame game. I don't know the official stat line but I think it would be maybe 3 catches for 15-20 yards. I did not see him early on which was a little bit disappointing considering the hype out of training camp but he got in a bit later on. Two of his grabs were short dump offs by Lorenzen (whose play was borderline between meh and bleh), although the last one was a nice catch for a first down as he was going out of bounds that was rather good. Lorenzen did seem to favor Hall a bit in terms of who he looked for. Hall also dropped another dump off that he got clocked from behind on. The throw may have been less-than-stellar but it was hard to tell.

The guys who were working ahead of Hall (Garcon and Aso-something or other) seemed pretty good, Garcon in particular, so I suppose its not totally surprising he wasn't more involved with the first or second team offense, just a bit disappointing.

Jersey number: 83.

Height, weight: 6-3, 240.

Age: 24.

Hometown: Born in Bedford, Ohio, and lives in Cleveland.

College: Ohio State.

Pro tenure: Second year, drafted in fifth round, 169th overall in 2007.

Go back to Ohio State in the offseason? "I was back all summer, working out with the guys, who are getting ready to win another national championship in Columbus."

Other offseason travels? "Miami, Atlanta, New Orleans, New York, New Jersey, Phoenix."

Head not shaven as usual? There's a little stubble there? "I keep it clean, but we're at camp right now. Now I've got to go shave my head because you said that."

Is there an event you don't want to miss in the Olympics? "The 100, 200 and 400, I like those events. Our coach at Ohio State, Butch Reynolds, used to have the world record in the 400, so I'm pretty in tune to the 400. And I want to see Tyson Gay run that 100 and bring home the gold."

Wide receiver Pierre Garcon has an excellent shot to make this team, although he didn't play last week due to injury. He made a couple decent catches in traffic this week and, again, I was struck by how smooth he looks in practice. You wouldn't know he's a rookie by how he's handled himself. That said, it's another numbers question regarding how many receivers the Colts will keep. Four, maybe five? Given the return from injury of other key players, namely Dwight Freeney and Bob Sanders on defense, and being a little thin at linebacker with Session in for Hagler, maybe the Colts can't keep five receivers. Roy Hall, who is out Saturday with a sore hamstring but has assured he will be OK, stands to make this team based on his value on special teams. If that's the case, do the Colts keep five receivers with Garcon and Devin Aromashodu? Or does Courtney Roby intrigue them enough to keep him? Leaving camp, the obvious answer is a big "I don't know." Not a cop out, but three more games should give us an idea of where the Colts are leaning.

Roy Hall assures he's OK and will be back soon. Nobody is paying too much attention to these guys with all the other big names out, but Hall has been nursing a sore hamstring.

Rookie Garcon might have jumped Roy for the 4th receiver spot after Harrion, Wayne and Gonzo...

I'm thinking five wide receivers with Pierre Garcon being the fourth, Roy Hall the fifth.

WR Roy Hall is still a question mark but remains optimistic he will return. When, even he doesn't know. He had his right knee scoped early in the season, and that's been a long while ago, so it's taken time to rehab. But he sounds close. When I told him he's the most asked-about player on the weekly live chats, he pointed out that if he didn't know his timetable, how could I? True. But it's my job to ask these questions, which he understands. So, for now, Hall is still up in the air, but the Colts have carried his roster spot for this long, so I do foresee him returning soon.

Hall returns

Wide receiver Roy Hall has returned to practice this week for the first time since undergoing arthroscopic knee surgery earlier this season. He injured the knee in the season opener against Chicago.
Hall resides in Cleveland, was a multisport standout at Brush High School in nearby Lyndhurst and is eager to play against a team he watched growing up.
"It's always a dream to play in that stadium that you grew up watching all the time,'' he said.

Player Review: Roy Hall

Hall had another injury filled season appearing in only 4 games and setting a franchise record for most times a commenter call for him to be cut, but the Colts continued to show confidence in him. Hall started and ended the season as Indy's #4 WR and wasn't IR'ed despite suffering a knee injury that cost him over half the season even though roster space was often tight.

Hall recorded 3 special teams tackles in his four regular season games, along with catching his first NFL pass for 9 yards. Hall played in the playoff game, making a special teams tackle and taking a handful of snaps in the offense.

Hall is still a project who made his way onto a NFL roster because of his size and freakish athleticism. The Colts obviously still love his potential as a WR and contributions on special teams.

Contract Info: Signed through 2010, Cap Charges: 498K, 587K

Unlucky may be a better description of Halls first two seasons than Injury prone. A special teams collision that left the other player temporarily paralyzed and Hall concussed with a serious shoulder injury cost Hall the last 13 games of his rookie season. A knee injury in the opener was expected to cost Hall at the very least a month after arthroscopic surgery on the knee. Hall returned to practice 3 months later and played the following week.

Hall could end up on 3 career paths. He could realize his potential and be a force at WR. He could continue to get injured and end up out of the league, or the one I feel is most likely, he'll be a great special teamer and a mediocre, depth WR for as long as his physical skills remain great.

THE WIDE RECEIVERS
By John Oehser - Special to Colts.com
Fourth of a Position-by-Position Series on the Colts' Roster

Roy Hall, third season. A fifth-round selection in the 2007 NFL Draft, Hall has missed 25 games over two seasons with injuries. ?A very capable guy who was hurt a good portion of the year last year,? Caldwell said of Hall, adding, ?but Roy has size, girth, speed and he certainly is a guy capable of making plays. Roy Hall is one of those guys who has to work to continue to develop within our system.?

Exclusive B/R Interview with Indianapolis Colts Wide Receiver Roy Hall
by Ryan Michael (Senior Writer)

Roy Hall was selected by the Indianapolis Colts in the fifth round of the 2007 NFL Draft out of ?The? Ohio State University. While he was fortunate enough to be drafted along with fellow Buckeye teammate Anthony Gonzalez, he suffered a devastating shoulder injury after a serious special teams collision put Hall on the Injured Reserve for the remainder of 2007 season.

While a season-ending injury would put most NFL players on the shelf, Hall instead chose to make an impact off the field while he took the time to recover from his injury.

People have referred to Roy Hall as ?The Librarian? due to his efforts to help promote literacy by traveling to schools across America and encouraging children to enjoy and appreciate the values of reading.

Roy is also know for the ?Roy Hall Football Skills Camp? which was established to help teach High School students the fundamentals of football while also placing a strong emphasis on the development of positive character.

In 2008, Hall continued to remain active on special teams and even recorded his first career reception during the Colts? 23-0 victory over the Tennessee Titans in Week 17.

With the departure of future Hall of Fame receiver Marvin Harrison, Hall has an opportunity to make a name for himself in 2009.

Now my next question is, everyone knows that you have a lot of passion for Ohio State Football. What did it mean to you to be drafted alongside Ohio State teammate, Anthony Gonzalez and do you secretly pull for Buckeye?s to get drafted to Indianapolis every year?

Every year you want to add a couple of your former teammates. That Ohio State blood-line, you want to add those guys to the team.

This year we happened to be in a situation where I thought we were going to draft running-back Beanie Wells but we decided to draft the running-back out of Connecticut (Donald Brown).

So I was like, we were almost gaining up and almost had a couple more numbers. It?s always a good thing when you have people that you know around you, people that you grew up with. From the age of 18 to 22, you?re really finding yourself and you?re really growing into manhood.

Just having that familiar face around makes the transition that much easier and it always helps to have a friend in the locker-room.

Earlier today you talked to me about wanting to create a sense of change for yourself this season. So, can you tell us the story about changing your jersey number and how that change might reflect your level of determination this year?

Well, nothing against the number 83 per-se but the last couple years I?ve worn 83 and I?ve had a couple of injuries and a little surgery. 81 to me is just a way for me to get a fresh start, just kind of shed that old number and to start over fresh, brand new, to come to a situation where I can make a name for the number 81.

Brandon Stokley was number 83 and you see a lot of those 83 jerseys in the crowd. So hopefully one day there will be a lot of 81 jerseys because of my accomplishments and great play.

It?s just a time for me to start over fresh. I was number eight in high school and in college. Number 80 wasn?t available so I took 81. Eight times one is eight so however you want to look at it, it?s going to work out pretty good for me.

Hall has all-star cast for charity game

Roy Hall has always been driven to be the best he could be as an athlete, and that drive has taken the former Brush standout from South Euclid to Ohio State and on to an NFL career.

Hall, a current member of the Indianapolis Colts, is equally driven to give back to the community where he got his start, and that charitable drive will be on full display next Friday at his high school alma mater.

With a little help from his NFL friends.

The Some Rise Sunset Celebrity Basketball Game is scheduled for June 12 at 6 p.m. at Brush. Hall and nine current and former NFL players will take on a team of current and former Arcs to raise money for his foundation, The Roy Hall D.R.I.V.E.N. Foundation. Tickets are $10, with all proceeds going to help raise money to provide food to those in need and books to elementary students among other charitable efforts.

"God has blessed me with athletic ability, but it is important for me to do something for the community and remind these high school kids that you can make it as long as you put in hard work," Hall said. "Everything in life isn't just given to you, but if you do things the right way, you can make it. I just want to make an impact any way I can in the community."

The game will feature an NFL Team comprised of Hall, Steelers Super Bowl hero Santonio Holmes, Browns kick returner Josh Cribbs, Donte Whitner, Heisman Trophy winner Troy Smith, Mike Doss, Jay Richardson, Pierre Garcon, Tony Fisher (Euclid) and James Cotton
