WR Ted Ginn, Jr. (Official Thread)

When I first saw the thread, I only saw the "San" part and hoped that he had been traded to San Diego.

Sorry Teddy.

Why are you sorry, exactly? He just got traded from a team whose fans piss all over Ted to a team that needs a special teams playmaker badly. He won't have much pressure in SF. And they'll be challenging for a playoff spot next year. If they can just get decent QB play they'll be in the playoffs. Young team.

This is a great fit.

He really had some issues last year though Maimi's front office made me wonder when they wouldn't let him return kicks and punts when they were terrible at it to begin with. If he'd shown one thing in the NFL it was that he was a treat on special teams.

I had said if I ran the Browns I wouldn't offer a pick higher than the second of their three 5th rounders. Turns out he went for the pick immediately before that one. I'm not mad at all that the Browns didn't get him. I'll admit that my desire to pick him up was based more on the fact that he played for Ohio State than any inclination that he could upgrade the receiver situation in Cleveland this season.

I hope he proves me wrong on that though. Good luck to him in SF.

As the rare SF/0SU fan I love this move. Welcome to the bay, Ted.

I am right there with you man. Now if they would just trade for Troy Smith so that he would have a quarterback to throw him the ball. I remember when the niners had an embarrassment of riches at qb...Montana, Young, Bono, Grbac....seemed like everyone they drafter worked out, and then came along Jim Drunkenmiller, followed a few years later by Alex Smith (the jury is still out on Alex, but they are about to turn their vote into the bailiff and it doesn't look good for Mr. Smith) Ginn is a great upgrade for them on special teams and at WR and they didn't really give up much.

Smith shouldn't be a starter, but as long as he doesn't try to do too much he should be serviceable, which is all the 49ers need at the moment. Well, they need more, but they can get by with serviceable. Just don't kill us, Alex.

Crabtree, Josh Morgan and Ted Ginn. Three young WRs with loads of potential. In a couple years, this WR group could be nasty.

Williamson: Ginn deal could be home run
April, 16, 2010
By Mike Sando

Just got off the phone with Matt Williamson of Scouts Inc. He also thinks the 49ers' deal for Ted Ginn makes sense:

I'm not sure you could find a better kickoff returner in the draft, and he also still has upside as a receiver. They got a returner who can also play receiver. That is how to look at it. Even if he never sees the field on offense, it's probably a good trade. He is very, very talented. At a minimum, he can run around the edges and get deep. That can open up things for Vernon Davis and the other guys.

Giving up a late-round pick, it's a home run even if Ginn does exactly what he did in Miami. A lot of times these kids who are high picks hit bottom. Bill Parcells didn?t like him. He didn't play tough. He steps out of bounds. He is not a banger. He's a finesse, speed guy. I?m sure Mike Singletary isn't going to love that, either. But maybe you get a change of scenery and say, 'Yeah, maybe I do need to toughen up, lower my shoulder, do those types of things.'

Ginn is a smart kid. He might realize this is his last chance. You step back, change your ways and there are far less expectations.

In Miami, he was a deep threat with Chad Pennington as his primary passer most of the time. Not that Alex Smith is Jay Cutler or anything (in terms of arm strength), but it's not Ginn's fault the quarterback can?t throw the ball 55 yards down the sideline. The 49ers get him for next to nothing and if he is one of the top five returners in the league, which he is, it's a good deal.

Ginn averaged 24.9 yards per kickoff return last season, 13th in the league among players with at least 20 returns. He ranked fifth in kickoff return yards with 1,296. He scored two touchdowns on returns, both against the Jets. Ginn hasn't returned punts regularly since 2007, when he averaged 9.6 yards on 24 returns, with an 87-yarder for a touchdown.

Embarrassing. For people who follow this stuff, Ohio State is making a mockery of itself. Almost exactly a week ago we have Santonio talking about "waking and baking". Today Teddy gets in it with a random fan...need to know better than this.
Um, no.

These individuals are making a mockery of themselves and they just happen to be Ohio State Alumni.

I'd imagine that's what he was getting at.

It doesn't look good for the school. That's the point.

I don't agree. Both have been in the NFL a few years, and they are their own people. Only haters/delusional scUM fans would use this as a slam against Ohio State.

But, that is just my opinion. Both were stupid for doing what they did, there is no denying that. I never understood the use of twitter/facebook/whatever to tell the world your every move.
