sandgk, it was against nw that he made his first appearance. the sick part is, the only reason ginn was back there to begin with was because holmes was comlpetely exhausted at that point in the game. if he hadn't have been... ginn may have never seen punt return duty. oh the little things...

The two returner, punt-safe formation is usually used when the other team is in no-man's land around the 30-35 yard line - when you expect a fake or pooch-punt - where the two return men double as safeties playing Cover-2. After Santonio ran the punt back for a TD against NW, then Ginn did the same thing, Hazell decided to leave them both back and let the opposing team pick its poison. Really, its great having those two, since a team can't really kick away from them unless they shank one out of bounds. Ginn has proven he can field a bad rugby hop (Michigan State) and make the gunners miss (Michigan), while Santonio can rip off a return of his own.
Obviously, Ginn Jr. makes any coach look like a friggin' genius, but where Hazell has really shined is in the kickoff returns with Mo Hall. I'm amazed how Hall has achieved the career return record, considering (1) our defenses have been so good that other teams rarely score and kick off to us, and (2) Mo Hall has played most of his career at Ohio State without any tread left on his wheels.
What I want to know is when is Coach Tressel going to hire Ginn Sr. as the DB coach. Ginn Sr.'s resume of DBs includes Ginn Jr., O'Neal, Woods, and Whitner ... why the heck don't we have this guy on the staff already to coach-up Underwood?

Sirjo Welch was our best tackler on special teams --- when he plays DB is he a safety or corner??
And, maybe one of the other WRs could switch to Defense. In high school they probably all went both ways. Probably Lyons or Gonzales would also make a good corner.
Besides, to make our DBs better, we need a better pass rush. It seemed to improve in the last 3-1/2 quarters against scUM -- hopefully it's a sign of things to come.

i agree, i think this is a HUGE reason as to why ginn has so many td's. you are putting the opposing team in a tough spot in punting it away. do you punt it for 20 yrds and almost guarantee their offense a score, or do you kick it and pray?
not till after jr leaves. as much heat as we are in over MoC, i doubt tressel will do anything that would seem even remotely questionable for a littel while. remember, tressel was just a day or so ago accused of flying sr. around in a helo...

I agree, mostly. There were some blatant holds on scUM's O line that weren't called, but that may have gone both ways. I don't remember seeing tOSU's O line holding anyone, but then again I don't quite watch for that nearly as much as I do the other team's O line.ashlandbuck said:

Didn't Lyons practice as a db late this season? I'm not sure if it was as a cb or safety, but am pretty sure he did. Maybe he's a possibility.
Gonzo played corner at Iggy, but I think he's going to be too valuable on offense to move him to defense. He has great speed, good hands (except for that drop) and runs good routes. With TGII and Holmes as numbers 1 and 2, Gonzo can do alot of damage when opposing defenses are worrying about Ginn and Holmes. He doesn't get alot of pub but I've loved watchinmg him since his high school days.
I'm in the camp that says TG stays on offense. Now, if like 2002, we start to struggle at the other corner, then I say give him a try. Lets just let someone win that job in the spring and fall and maybe we won't have to worry about spreading Teddy too thin. That split second of slowness from being tired could be the difference in a good return and a TD.

<HR SIZE=1>Teddy told me at the Glenville-Ignatius game that he will be repping at DB next year. That's right from the horse's mouth. Ginn and Youboty manning the cornerback positions sounds great to me. I know it might be hard for some of you to believe but that's his natural position. And he doesn't shy away from contact either. I've seen him blow plays up before.
Of course he will still be a weapon on offense and most likely on kickoff returns as well once Mo Hall has graduated. He should have been back there this season. He already is the best punt returner on the planet!

If our defense does not improve SIGNIFICANTLY next year, we will not win the national championship. PERIOD.
everyone is so enamored by teddy's speed that you all are turning into ESPN. You want highlights instead of wins. You want electrifying TDs over championships.
Does anyone remember how AWESOME our '96 defense was with Shawn Springs???? Yeah, he slipped against Michigan, but that's not why we lost. We lost because a John Cooper team lacked the intestinal fortitude to handle overcoming adversity in The Game. We were still up 9-7 when that happened, but it caused the fans, the players, and the coaches to all go into a shell because we were so fucking afraid of losing to michigan.
The bottom line is that he needs to play both ways. He is an incredible talent, and if we don't play him both ways WE ARE NOT MAXIMIZING HIS TALENT.
He doesn't have to play every single down. We could do many different things. For instance, we could use him on offense in the 1st half to build a lead, then switch him to CB in the 2nd half as we shut the other team down.
Our defense played their hearts out on Saturday and turned in a very admirable performance. But let's face it, this was a very AVERAGE defense all year long. We cannot expect Troy Smith to be on fire every single game next year. Like all QBs, there will be times when he struggles. We need to have a very very good defense if this team expects to contend. You can rely and trust a great defense to play well consistently, more than you can expect a good QB to do so.
The '05 defense WITH ted ginn reminds me a lot of the '96 defense. Solid but not spectacular defensive line. Very good linebackers and secondary. And a true, SHUT-DOWN cornerback. In my opinion, the 96 D was just as good, if not better, than the valiant '02 squad.
The '05 defense WITHOUT ted ginn? It will look a lot like this years. Yes, our offense should be a lot better and a lot more explosive. But we still don't have a running game. We are all so high on this 37 pt. explosion that we are forgetting this. It is downright silly to expect us to win every game if every game is to be a shoot-out.
Name one receiver in next year's Big Ten (we don't play wisconsin and purdue) that you think will be able to beat teddy ginn one-on-one. I can't think of any. He will shut down everyone he goes up against. This will totally open up our defensive playbook. Do you think we will play a soft zone if we got Ted Ginn? It would be a ridiculous notion. We will simply line him up against their best player, and he will totally shut him down. He will require absolutely no safety help. We could then do any number of things from there. We could use our 2 safeties to double up on their 2nd and 3rd best players and totally render them useless. Their 4th and 5th options will then be going one-on-one, but we have more depth than any team we'll face, and we should be fine there.
This year we played a soft zone and we got eaten up. Next year, Snyder will have the confidence in Ginn to go to an aggressive, man on man scheme. He was hesitant to pull the trigger on that scheme this year because our DBs could be beaten.
If Ginn is on O exclusively we will be a very exciting team, but will lose 1-3 games. If we put Ginn on D, and have him go both ways when we need a spark, we will have the best defense in the country and we will have an EXCELLENT shot at another national title.
Have you guys forgotten how AWESOME that '96 team was? With ginn on D, the '05 team is basically the same as that '96 squad with Tressel instead of Cooper and Troy Smith instead of Stanley Jackson.
