of course I watched The Game. I was there.


What I don't understand is why everyone on here expects every game next season TO PLAY OUT IN THE EXACT SAME WAY.

Our defense played very good in The Game. I am proud of each and every one of them. But the fact remains that this year, by and large, they were average.

If you claim that I'm letting my love for Ginn cloud my judgment, I can just as easily say that you're letting the amazingness of The Game cloud your judgment.

Did you watch the marshall game? northwestern? wisconsin? iowa? michigan st? purdue?

Our defense didn't look good in any of those games.

If you expect for troy smith to be on fire, and for coaches to kick to teddy, and for our team to be play with incredible passion, and for 105,000 fans to be screaming for us...and you expect this to happen for EVERY GAME next year, including the road games....then by all means, let's leave teddy on offense. Every week we'll have an offensive explosion (even though we still don't have a running game), every week we'll get a big lead and force the opposing team to be one-dimensional, and every week the opposing team will get rattled by the crowd (even when they are at home). Every week Teddy will return a punt to the house. Every week our offense will commit zero turnovers. Every week the opposing team will throw INTs on 1st and goal and drop wide open passes on 4th down.

If you guys expect this to happen every week, then everything is fine with Teddy on offense, and our team can be this walking highlight reel that becomes this media darling and beats USC 45-35 in the Rose Bowl.

But this is not going to happen every week. It's impossible.

But if Teddy becomes the LOCK-DOWN corner that I know he can be...causing our D to become a carbon copy of the great '96 squad...we WILL play great defense. EVERY WEEK. Just by the fundamental nature of the sport, great defenses are more consistent than great offenses.

Sometime next year, Troy Smith will struggle during a game (GASP!) But it won't matter. Our D, thanks to being the only team in the country with a lock-down CB, will be keeping the other team in check. We'll insert Teddy in at WR, and we'll march down the field and score. Our D will take over from there and we will win.

What do you have more confidence in? Do you believe that Troy Smith, with no running game to help him out, can play great every single week and lead us to an undefeated season? Or do you believe that a great defense, led by Ted Ginn Jr., will be able to shut down our opponents every single week and lead us to an undefeated season? I believe that option B is 100 times more likely. And that isn't a knock in any way on Troy Smith, who played like a legend in The Game and will be a great leader next year.

Does anybody remember that '96 team? We had Stanley Jackson at QB!!!!! And we DOMINATED!!!!!!
Let me repeat: We have a good defense even without Ginn. I am not belittling them in any way. But it won't be good enough to win a national championship. Our D-line is good, but it's not dominant enough to control every single game. I believe that with Ginn, it will be good enough to win a national championship.

I don't want ESPN highlights. I don't want a Heisman campaign. I want a NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP.

If Ted Ginn doesn't develop into a lockdown corner for whatever reason, then, by all means, let's keep him on offense. He can play some D on 3rd down passing situations. If he's not enough of an upgrade over Underwood or whoever, then I agree that it's not worth it to take the ball out of his hands.

However, I believe that he can become as good of a CB as Deion Sanders, and better than Shawn Springs. And if this does happen....we will be 100 times better off with him being a starter on defense, and providing the offense with a spark in the rare instance when we are behind.

Buckeyetrail - I too was somewhat disappointed by the defense this year probably because I was very spoiled by the great defense we had the past 2 years that was coordinated by a great defensive coordinator. This year, we not only had a young unit out there but we also had a new (and young) defensive coordinator. The Marshall, NW, Wisky, Iowa games I became quite disturbed to not see the halftime adjustments that Dantonio spoiled me with the past 2 years. But along about the Indiana game, a neat thing emerged. Halftime adjustments started to be made and the defense performed much better in the second half. That happened in the Penn State game also. Then it happened in the Michigan State game and even in the Purdue game. Recall in the Purdue game, Purdue did nothing in the second half until their last drive. (Still a bitch of mine about the d-coordinator, but I digress). And then in the scUM game, the adjustments were made after scUM's second TD. Also, remember that scUM had a very short field to notch TD #2. After TD #2, they were shut down until it was too late.

My point in the above is that I saw tremendous growth as the season wore on in the defensive coordinator. Look at the stats for each game from the Indiana game on and I think that our defense stiffened noticeably in the 2nd half of each game. This growth from the coordinator is just as important as anything else.

It's interesting how you dropped housteau's name there ....I call him Skinner, an old nick name he has. But where did you get that info from him....was it bucknuts?

That is true, in certain situations like against Purdue in 02", but I'm referring to tressel ball as they say. I know like you do that JT is really not as conservative as many fans and critics say, he just don't like to give the same look to a defence, and in fact he uses so many different people to achieve these different looks that it's hard for defences to closely guard everybody on this offence. He don't however like to run up scores on teams, mostly out of respect I believe.

I want to see him get some reps in the Alamo Bowl. Especially if we play a team like Texas Tech or Oklahoma State who have extremely talented offenses.
Don't want to overwork him though.

I've seen every snap of every game. There are two games were our defense looked discombobulated--Northwestern and Iowa. Marshall scored only 14 offensive points. Wisconsin scored 24 offensive points, but 7 of those were a gift when Holmes fumbled the punt at our 17 yard line, and they had only 344 yards total offense. We also held Michigan State to 6 points in the second half after making halftime adjustments. The Purdue game was similar, where second half adjustments totally shut down Purdue (6 drives for 75 yards total) until we inexplicably went back to a soft zone with under 2 minutes left to allow Orton to pick us apart. Our second-half defense improved each game after the Iowa debacle, and fortunately for us Snyder went to the "second half" defense after Michigan's second TD Saturday. I don't know about you, but I think our defense played pretty well overall after the Iowa game, and consistently improved over our final five games.

I can see everyone's point on this issue, but after watching this kid shutdown the very best WR's in his class at the Army All American Bowl I am definitely a believer that he will be the best CB to ever play the game of football. On astroturf, no blitzing allowed, no cover 2 allowed, an all star game where 4 out of 5 plays are passes, and TG2 allowed exactly 0 receptions against him facing every 5 star WR the West could throw at him..... yeah, the kid can play CB. His development as a WR this season has been incredible.... But I still believe this: TG2 will be an All Big Ten / possibly All American WR..... He will be the Jim Thorpe winner and the best CB to ever play the game..... now the question is can he do both??? I think he can, he's that special. If I had my druthers he would be the starting CB, and the #2/3 WR. He would also return Punts and Kicks until he told me he needed a break..... Let this guy play as much football as he can handle, because it's a thing of beauty to watch him play.

Next year will be so different from this year. Haw, Pittman - plus one or more of the incoming Freshman RB's (and we look likely to get at least one good 'un).
On D -- Lets remember Jamario O'Neal should be there to lend a hand. He has really good speed, plus more heft. My preference is for Ginn to get the bulk of the work producing points - though if he does D with full time KR and PR work and occasional WR duty that also would be something to see.

I wonder if the coaches would consider a switch of Whitner from safety to CB over the winter. I think he's probably better off at safety, but there is depth at safety and none at CB. If anyone were to switch over I think Donte would be the most likely candidate.

Wow, it's totally mind-boggling how some of you folks think that real-life football is just like NCAA Football 2005 and can just plug in players all over the place. Donte Whitner ain't going nowhere. He's a potential first-team all-conference safety. He was moved from corner to safety for a reason. And now folks want to move him back. Ginn will stay at full-time WR and punt/kick returner...period. He hasn't seen a single snap on defense...if the staff was thinking about it they'd have put him out there at CB during the last drive drive or two of the Indiana game, but they didn't. The staff has no intentions of moving him to defense, and the only defense he'll see is nickle/dime packages, if that. Hey, but I heard they're thinking about moving Fox back to his "natural" safety position for the Alamo Bowl.

Contrary to the logical argument that TG2 must not be taken away from the offense, I believe that IF he is as good of a cover corner as he appeared to be in the post-season HS all-star games, and he proves it in the Spring, and EJ, BJ, and friends do not come close to matching him at CB, then he is most valuable at CB/KR/PR next year. Remember, there will be no Fox or Jacobs, and no other experienced CBs except EJ will be back. On the other side, we will have Holmes, Hall, Dukes, and Lyons at WR. In this scenario, a move to D makes sense.

Ginn isn't experienced at CB either. We have Mike Roberts, Brandon Underwood, E.J. Underwood (maybe), De'Angelo Haslam, Shaun Lane, and Nick Patterson from which to choose at CB, in addition to Youboty (word has been that Lane has been doing quite well at practices). And although we have Holmes, Hall, Dukes, and Lyons at WR (and don't forget Gonzalez), none of them, with the possible exception of Holmes, is near the versatile game-breaker that Ginn is.

Man, I'm not sure who's doing the smoking here. TG2 is going to be a corner. Our depth at WR is stupid, with Lyons, Dukes, Gonzales, Hall, Holmes -- don't forget Jordan comes back from injury next year also, and we've got Hartline coming in as well.

Ginn will of course be a returner for punts and kicks, and get some reps on O, like the 2002 version of Gamble or the Heisman version of Woodson, but the guys talking about him being a lock down at CB aren't kidding. Deion Sanders could take away half of the football field from an opposing offense, and Ginn has that level of talent.

Now let's talk about what we have at CB. Youboty. EJ hasn't managed to step up and take the position from anyone yet, losing out to both Gamble and Youboty. What makes anyone think that he'll beat out Ginn?

In order for us to win a B10 and NC, we HAVE TO HAVE a dominating defense. Not a good one, not a great one, but a legendary one. Our LB corps could be as good as they've ever been; the safties are deep and are all hitters; Youboty is becoming a fine corner, and the d-line while lacking a Smith, Scott or Wisky's Hawthorne and James, does have great depth as well. What we're missing is a corner who can take away a superstar wideout. Youboty is close, and he did a nice job against Edwards, but Ginn will be the real deal.

This isn't some BN nonsense, like Fox to his "natural position" or Whitner to CB -- the kid was the #1 prospect in the country on defense and has taken apart the best WRs he's faced.
