XP administrator help...

Hey guys (and gals).... I've agreed to lend my XP laptop to a conference here at OU this weekend and want to make sure it's buttoned up nice and tight.

I've created a limited user account for the conference, however, all desktop shortcuts for programs show up on their desktop and I would like to delete them. I can't do it when logged into this limited account, so how can I do this as the computer admin?

I think if you go in to users while signed on to the admin account you can pick and choose which proggies you'd allow on other accounts.

Control Panel > Users then pick the user acct. you want to mess with. (Not your admin account. I'm not sure I'm being clear. YOu should be signed on to your regular account, but when you go in to the user panel, pick the user account you want to mess with, not the "Admin" account... hope that makes sense)

You want to log back on as the admin, then go here: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Desktop. Those are the icons that are showing up.

Also, go here to fix the start menu icons you don't want them to have: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs.

I assume you don't really want to delete the icons, but you'd probably rather move them to your own folder. Browse to the above directories, but with your username instead of "All Users."

He's got it, you just want to go to the acct you set up instead of "all users" and remove them there. The "all users" would be appropriate if you hadn't already created the "limited rights" acct but not after the fact.

Coming from a personal laptop, if the limited account was just created and it inherited the icons, they won't show up in the "c:/documents & settings/newuser/desktop" folder. That folder will be empty until that user adds icons. As Hodge said, you'd need to go to "all users" and move those icons into your main user's folder. When programs are installed, they'll often create icons in the "all users" folder

Right click on an empty spot on the desktop..Arrange icons by/ hide icons,if you are in a hurry and don't want to go through anything else.

from your administrator account, go to c:\documents and settings\<Limited Account name>\Desktop and delete what you need.

Thanks for the input and help from everyone. It seems the quickest way to access and manage all of this information is to right-click on the start button and explore all users. I made this mistake Hodge and deleted the icons from all users, but it's no big deal really.

Should be in the recycle bin if you need to recover.
