Lying to the NCAA is worse than punching a kid in your book? Did I read that right?

No.

Maybe bad wording on my part. I'm rating the "incidents" not the actions themselves. What Coach Hayes did deserved immediate attention. He acknowledged it and moved on. What Coach tress did would make Coach Hayes "roll over." Coach Hayes would never be dishonest, NEVER! Coach Tressel was, and that is what makes it the most disappointing.

Peace

For the 3,000 fucking time...

If Ohio State was that dirty, why are players selling memorabilia for well under face value for tattoos and cash?

Couldn't they just get it elsewhere?

This is a witch-hunt that turned up some new stories, but that's it really. Tressel should have been allowed to weather this storm out...this SI article is a fart in the wind.

I don't know why they did, but I'm not sure what about that makes it any better or worse. They sold/traded their stuff for tattoos, cash and cars. And maybe pot. The coach covered it up and lied.

I'm not sure what about that isn't dirty. Maybe we have different definitions.

Tressel lied about the "tat-5". I get it. I also understand, and I presume others understand why he did that. He felt the punishment wouldn't fit the crime. Terrelle Pryor and co. would have been destroyed in Columbus for essentially making a bone-headed decision....

It wasn't Tressel's call to make, but he did anyways, and now here we are...

Fair enough. He was willing to take a 5 game suspension and forfeit $250,000.

All of this additional material is garbage, IMO. How is Tressel going to monitor whether or not Robert Rose took cash for trinkets? Or Jermil Martin? Or sold trinkets for weed?

Seriously? That SI story is hot air...seriously....

And don't even get me started on some of the details I picked up on as soon as I read them....John Simon?!?!? Dude has had the same tattoos since he arrived on campus. Did he sell his High School graduation ring?

Nathan Williams has had same tattoos since he arrived as well....maybe he was a late enrollee because he was too busy selling his Ohio High championship cleats for tattoos....

My biggest point of contention, is everyone knew this wasn't isolated to the "tat-5". Just because Gene Smith wanted everyone to take him at face-value doesn't mean we're all idiots.

The point remains, if Ohio State were that dirty....Terrelle Pryor wouldn't have to sell cleats for cash. He'd just get it from a "hook-up". I'm sure Terrelle would rather have $500 handed to him rather than sell a championship ring.....

Which is the lesson many universities are learning. Have a laundered sum of cash available for students so they don't go out and associate with idiots and get caught. In the mean time, it's ok for Cam Newton's father to sell his kid to the highest bidder.

Although, the biggest problem is Tressel lying about it. Sadly, that one choice will cause the university to be nailed with lack of institutional control. Honestly, I thought he should have been fired a while ago. You simply don't lie to the NCAA. By lying, he took what would have been a 5 game suspension for a few players and instead turned it into something that will severely damage this program for years.

In the mean time you have every worthless reporter in the world digging into stuff pulling out 3 time felons for hearsay, and stating the players are getting deals on cars when the records show not even half were below blue book (which they actually tried to spin into something incriminating).

You don't even have to go that far for the logic. Rose himself stated the university would not help him even though his family was poor. If he is going to "tell all" he sure would tell about cash payments.

Like I stated, this simply teaches universities they need to be better at laundering money from boosters and getting it to the players. It's actually the best solution if you think about it. If they even hear about a player possibly taking something on the side, they can threaten to take away their cash. Everyone stays clear, and as long as they are good at it (not like SMU where is was really sloppy), they won't get caught. Much easier than trying to police 85+ players every day.

It seems to me that people who already thought Ohio State was going to burn took this piece as a terrible scar on the program and something that is going to bring us down even further.

People who already thought the program was going to take some hits but generally be alright saw the article as a series of unsubstantiated claims meant to make the program look bad (and certainly will to fans across the country predisposed to hate Ohio State), but lacking in enough hard evidence to really do any further damage with the NCAA.

The reality is somewhere in the middle. Will Ohio State have to vacate wins? Probably. Will Ohio State get hit with a post season ban and scholarship reductions? Maybe. But what is really "down" for Ohio State? A few 10-2 or 9-3 seasons (maybe 7-5 if things get REALLY bad, heaven forbid) without a bowl game before the new coach gets rolling, the ban is lifted, and the scholarships are returned?

I can't help but feel a little optimistic about the future, and even possibly excited. It's like when players graduate, you are sorry to see them go, but are excited to see the new players coming in and showing what they've got.

It was terribly sad for Tressel to go out like he did, but now it is time to turn the page. Ohio State will take their lumps for this, possibly lose some of the periphery fans (is that really such a bad thing?) and keep on rolling- hopefully with players that understand the consequences of their actions a little bit better and a compliance staff a little bit more focused on their jobs.

Those are my pie in the sky hopes for the future, regardless of what punishments the Buckeyes may or may not receive.

Will Ohio State ever win 6 Big Ten championships in a row again? Probably not. Will they be competing for Big Ten championships and National Titles again within the next 5 years? I'd like to think so.

A note to everyone:

Remember the motherfuckers that stopped rocking the tOSU gear today. Remember them for as long as they live. Don't let them back on the wagon. Don't let them say "I've always loved tOSU. Don't let them share in the thrill of victory after stepping under an umbrella during this shitstorm.

Fuck all you fans that aren't still down. Fuck you in your ear holes with a tattooed cock.

Agree with this 100% - but I don't think the last part really meshes around here as most everyone who posts here (at least I would like to think) will stick it out through thick and thin with the program.

And if they don't....fuck them :)

hopefully the student section will be emptied of kids that view games as a drinking and social event and Block O will be more than half full by kick off for the next few years... silver lining

Yeah, the whole thing was just venting really. Not too many fairweather fans post on BP. Except for JCOSU. Pretty sure he used to be an Iowa fan.
