Youngstown Style Pizza

We have those in Ohio also...they're called Stromboli, or Calzone.

I'm sorry but from my experience, Columbus at least does not have calzones. They have things they try to pass off as calzones, but no actually calzones. A calzone has to be cooked in a brick hearth and be covered in a thin layer of flour for a nice textured finish. This is in fact where I got my future porno name from: Dusty Calzone.

Google image search Calzone, and tell me which one you're talking about. I couldn't find one on the first page that had flour on it...but Sbarro in the Indian Mound Mall has flour on theirs.

The flour gives it a crispy look from afar.

Most calzones I got in Ohio seemed to be brushed with egg for a finish. Not a fan of that. Although this one looks delicious, here's an example of the egg finish.

if you are talking about pizza in the youngstown area and you aren't saying Wedgewood on Raccoon in austintown then just fuck off and die. the pizza there is second to none.

Bingo. I'm half-tempted to drive up from C-Bus to A-town and back next week just to take a couple Wedgewood pizza back.

Wedgewood now has a franchise open in Grove City. I knew there was a pizza place where it is, but didn't pay attention to it until I looked more closely the other day and saw the name. Not owned by the same folks, but operated under the same name. I think pizza might be on the menu tomorrow evening.

Wedgewood Pizza Columbus

The Beginnings of Wedgewood Pizza Columbus
Growing up in an Italian family, in the Youngstown, Ohio area, we were used to a thick ?sliced pizza with fresh homemade ingredients. My grandmother, Angiolina Cercone (from Pacentro, Italy), always made her own dough, sauce and toppings, however, when she passed, since we had no experience making it ourselves, we began ordering from local pizza places. Once we ordered from Fernando?s Wedgewood Pizza, we knew it was the closest we would ever get to my grandmother?s, and we became a loyal customer.
Even after moving to Columbus, I would crave it and luckily my parents would order it for me every time I visited them. I even joked with my father about opening a Wedgewood in Columbus because I still could not find a pizza I enjoyed as much.
So, when my father, Dominic Cercone, retired from GM after forty years, he decided he wanted to do more than just retire and met with Fernando to open the franchise. That was over 2 years ago, and we have been moving forward ever since.
What made us love the franchise even more was working with Fernando, his family and employees, and seeing the passion for creating a great tasting pizza. We also saw his generosity to the community. We share in those passions and want to make this franchise as valued in Columbus as it is in Youngstown. Like Fernando, we believe that even though we only sell pizza, it?s more than a pizza shop. It?s a member of the community, and a place where people can either pick-up or dine-in to enjoy a great tasting pizza without it costing a fortune.
Our family looks forward to serving Grove City and the greater Columbus area, and hope you will enjoy us being a part your community.
Sincerely,
Alicia
Store Manager and Fan of Fernando?s Wedgewood Pizza

Wedgewood Pizza Columbus

They weren't open yet when I first posted. Did try it last night. Not my favorite, but still pretty damn tasty. I have no idea how it compares to the original Wedgewood pizza.

The good news for them is that it's the best of the local places with a medium-thickness crust. We already have a place with a great thin crust and another place with an incredible Chicago-style stuffed pizza. For pan pizza, Wedgewood is the new favorite.
