Your Five Favorite Buckeye Seasons

NFBuck

Total Coverage.
  • A post in the Oregon thread made me think of this. What would be your five favorite Buckeye seasons that you have witnesses?
    1. 2002: Just an improbable season from start to finish. Close win after close win. The emergence of one of the most dominant offensive forces I have seen at tOSU (MoC), clutch Krenzel moments, Holy Buckeye!, badass defense, Gamble pick-six vs Penn State, and of course Cie Grant blitzing Dorsey. "Rest easy, Woody; there's a new man in town."
    2. 1996: Crushing disappointment of the scUM game aside, Orlando Pace MAULING fools, The Big Kat, ND game domination, Hanging 70 the first two weeks, and my second favorite game ever, the Rose Bowl with Germaine coming of age.
    3. 2012: After all of the adversity of the previous 9 months, the 2012 team were, to quote Ballhag O'Benadryl, "a bunch of fuckers." A new age on offense, and 12 straight wins from a team that nobody knew what to expect from.
    4. 2005: I LOVED that team. The Hawk-Schlegel-Carp LB crew. The great game against Texas. Troy Smith growing up before our eyes. Gonzo's UNREAL catch followed by Pittman ripping out scUM's hearts. Then topped off with a record breaking performance against ND.
    5. 1995: Not the best season, but was my only year on campus. Eddie-fever. Hoying to Glenn. Again, Pace mauling fools. The run to 11-0 was spectacular. Unfortunately, a GREAT season was tarnished by the dreaded "Cooper-finish."
This season isn't over, but it'll most likely be on there...just don't know where. 2009 Rose Bowl season would probably be #6.

    1. 2002

    2. 2001 - Tress talked shit the day he was hired, Jonathan Wells backed it up.

    3. 2005 - The best D of my lifetime.

    4. 2006 - Awesome year. Troy and Teddy show. Jan of 2007 doesn't count.

    5. 1998 - Robbed by FSU of our title shot. Still beat TSUN.

There is no way I can include any year in which tOSU lost to tsun. I just...can't.

I was thinking about something similar this morning - how 2004 was more enjoyable to me than 2006 was. I think it's because Ohio State beat Michigan AND its bowl game. Despite having 4 losses, I was happier in the off-season than I was between 2006 and 2007. 2004 was also the first time (out of about 6) when I was present for Ohio State beating Michigan, so I'm sure that helps.

    I'd probably go with...
    1. 2002
    2. 2012
    3. 1998
    4. 1996
    5. 2004

For the record, my first real season of watching Ohio State was 1986.

2004 was a very strange year. The team was horrible mid-October, but once Troy started to mature, they were an excellent team. That 2004 scUM game is one of my favorite games ever. Troy absolutely wiped the field with them. Teddy too. Then demolishing Okie State in the Alamo Bowl. That was the springboard for 2005. Had such high hopes as that season ended. I just cannot put 1998 on my list. As disappointing as all of the losses to scUM were in the 90's, that MSU game just ruined that whole season for me. No friggin' way that LOADED team should have lost to a mediocre sparty. That was the biggest choke I have ever witnessed...and the moment I knew we'd never win a NC with Coop. We were soooo much better than everybody else that year, except on that one day. Ugh.

1967 season - The Super Sophs came into town and ran the table, culminating with a wonderful beat down of OJ and the USC spoiled children. On the way, they took apart the #1 team, Purdue, and their all everything player, Leroy Keyes, and the quarterback, Bob Griese in the Shoe.
2002 season - for obvious reasons, the improbable win over Miami, and vindication of Jim Tresselball, plus all the great plays, including the hail mary against Purdue.
1995 season - hurt that Michigan State knocked the last second pass away, otherwise there would be another date on the Ring inside the shoe.
2012 season - just to see Urb kick-start tOSU back into greatness, with outstanding recruiting, position coaches that are all great at their jobs, a new 'modern' offense (without losing tOSU smashmouth run game), and watching Buckeye Pride return.
All the other seasons played - I know it's a cop-out, but I love 'em all, and even when we don't win 'em all, there's plenty of great memories for all.

    :banger:

2002 - still remember raymont harris on 1460 picking texas tech to beat us in the opener
2009 - that damn usc game...ugh...rose bowl win was so satisfying though vs Oregon
2006 - preseason #1 all the way to the epic #1 vs. #2 in the shoe...(bowl game doesn't exist)
2005 - once the team got settled they were the best in the nation in my opinion
    2012 - URBAN FREAKIN MEYER

I just cannot include any season with a loss to scum but here are a couple of honorable mentions

    1996 (rose bowl)
1998 (whippin scum in the shoe)
    1995 (for 11 games)

2002, was NOT my favorite season. I had stomach problems every Saturday!
Every one! I was a wreck!

96 and the Rose Bowl win over Arizona State was great except for the hole from a remote I threw after Jake the Snake scored!
2006 was pretty special. (except for the Bowl game)

2002: 14 and 0, 10 heart attacks and one hole in the ceiling of the apartment we lived in at the time when Holy Buckeye happened. The pick-six by Gamble against PSU is still the loudest noise I've ever heard outside of an airport runway. The entire stadium was shaking it was so friggin loud. I get goose bumps just watching the clips on youtube even to this day. And then to top it off, physically and mentally beat a great Miami team into the ground - a loss that program still hasn't recovered from - absolutely epic.

2005: It was the first year back from Iraq to me (although I was able to go to watch them beat scUM in 2004 which was epic in and of itself), and it was great watching a young team grow up that year. The Texas game was epic and then the scUM game topped it. Then it was on to beating Charlie Cheeseburger and Captain Checkdown. Can't beat that.

1998: This was the best team I've ever seen play college football. They were so good they could have only beaten themselves, and that's what happened against Sparty.

2001: JT talked the talk, the team walked the walk.

2006: The best offense of the JT era was fun to watch virtually every time they had the ball. Up until the MNC game, this team had a focus that was second to none on the list except for the 2002 team. They just would not lose. I wish they could have kept that focus for another couple weeks.

1968 season. I never saw a QB like Rex Kern, handle the ball like he did, especially in the 69 RoseBowl, he was so good, he even faked out the NBC camera man on several occasions. Then there is Curt Gowdy announcing "And there's the OSUMB playing their famous song "Hurry up Sloopy". That made me Laugh.

2002 season. Tressel ball gave all of us fits that season, but after 34 years we finally got another NC. And who can ever forget NC game against the U, nobody gave us a chance huh?. Too bad Clarett let everything go to his head after that. Such a shame and waste of great talent.

2006 season. To me the game with Michigan was the NC game for me. That game was one of the most
vicious and hard fought game that I ever witnessed.

2009 season. That was a great season in my mind. The lost to Illinois devastated me, if we would have won that game could we have won another NC?

2012 season. For Urban Meyer to come in and bring this team from a losing season in 2011 to being undefeated after 12 games in a row was great. How in the hell we beat Purdue just blows me away.
The 2012 season kind of reminded of the 2002 team. Some very close games in both of those seasons could have gone either way. But that's football I guess.

That was 2007. Strange year in CFB. I think something like 5 straight weeks at one point the #2 team lost (friggin' perennial also-rans like Cal and South Florida among them). We were supposed to be rebuilding, climbed to #1, then lost to Illinois...but somehow still backed into the BCSNCG after everybody ahead of us lost. That was the year wvu was poised to go the the NCG, then they choked against lowly Pitt as the #2 team in the country. LSU lost 2 games and still won the NC. Just a weird, weird year. Never saw anything like it.

2002: '68 might be above it if I lived through it, but in my lifetime there's no question.

1995: I grew up watching and loving Buckeye football but this was the team that really hooked me. 45-26, Hoying to Glenn with Regis on the sideline, Eddie for 314, 56-0 in the first half of Iowa, Heisman...quite a downer ending to the season but this is the one I remember more than any other from my formative years.

2005: Took a few games to get rolling, but the comeback against TTUN and whipping ND in the Fiesta...very enjoyable.

2006: #1 vs. #2 in Austin, #1 vs. #2 in Columbus and I was at both games. Troy was on a whole different level September-November.

2012: Second undefeated Buckeye team of my lifetime. Braxton doing Braxton things. Clearing the air from the Tressel fallout and 2011.

    Didn't quite make the cut:

1996: Dammit, Shawn Springs! First Rose Bowl birth/win that I remember.
1998: Up 24-9 in the 3rd and blow it against a mediocre MSU team? Still vividly remember Michael Wiley's TD Run against TTUN.
2004: Growing pains early and having to transition from Zwick to Smith and the emergence of Ginn. Maybe my favorite game against TTUN
2007: How they couldn't get off the field in the 4th against Illinois, I don't know. Boeckman was a revelation up till that point too, amazing how fast he lost his mojo.
2009: Just for the Rose Bowl win. Mystified how this team lost to Purdue.
