Assistant to the Head Coach
I love talking about movies and seeing how my often-changing list compares to other peoples' lists.

So here we go. I need to see more classic films from pre-90s.

1) Goodfellas - This movie has everything. Great story, great acting, great cast, etc.
2) There Will Be Blood - Daniel Day-Lewis is the greatest actor I've ever seen. And this is his best work.
3) The Prestige
- My favorite Christopher Nolan film. Hugh Jackman, Christian Bale, and Michael Caine all play fantastic characters and play them well.
4) Forrest Gump
- Possibly the best story I've seen in a movie, and Tom Hanks nails it.
5) Pan's Labyrinth
- Beautiful.
6) No Country for Old Men
- Anton Chigurh = creepiest villain of the decade not in a superhero movie?
7) The Shawshank Redemption
- a great story involving hope.
8) The Departed - Has some problems, but this movie throws a lot at the viewer and I liked everything it threw at me.
9) Batman Begins - Shows a side of Batman we hadn't seen before, and takes the character in a new, dark direction.
10) Seven - Fucking creepy.
11) Casino - Similar to Goodfellas, only not as good. Joe Pesci's best film, and my favorite Robert De Niro character as well.
12) Monty Python and the Holy Grail - Best. Comedy. Ever.
13) WALL-E - Best animated film ever.
14) Saving Private Ryan - Best war movie ever.
15) Lord of the Rings (trilogy) - A good 9 hour adventure, even though I find a couple of the characters kind of annoying. I really enjoy the story and I find myself never getting tired of the story, despite seeing the films so many times.
16) Little Miss Sunshine - Steve Carell at his best, and the rest of the cast is really funny as well. It's also an uplifting story.
17) Shrek - Very funny, and I think each of the actors really gets to show their personality, even though it's an animated film.
18) Casino Royale - Best Bond film, and that's saying something. Daniel Craig has brought back the Bond swagger. Can't wait for the next one.
19) Jurassic Park - Still has the best CGI.. and the T-Rex scene is still pretty intense.
20) Gladiator - Not a big Ridley Scott fan, but this film is entertaining.
21) The Fountain - Sad, and Hugh Jackman and Rachel Weisz have some major chemistry.
22) A Beautiful Mind - Russell Crowe's best acting performance, but it does drag at times.
23) V for Vendetta - If Natalie Portman were more believable, this film would be higher. Still a really good movie, although a little far-fetched.
24) Sin City - Visually stunning, and action-packed.
25) Office Space - Hilarious, and everyone can relate.

Well, in no particular order, I'll name a few of my random favorites, starting with a serious Coen brother's fix:

1) The Big Lebowski ("Obviously you're not a golfer.")
2) Oh Brother, Where art Thou? ("I dont want Fop, goddamnit! I'm a Dapper Dan man.")
3) Miller's Crossing (Didn't throw in any of the gangster flicks you referenced, but this is a forgotten classic that belongs in the same conversation)
4) No Country for Old Men (what you said)
5) The Usual Suspects (Biggest twist in American cinema history? Well, there is still The Crying Game.)
6) Amores Perros (one of the best films I've seen in years, but can make you queasy if you're a dog lover like me)
7) Rushmore ("You think I got kicked out because of just the aquarium? Nah, it was the handjob. And you know what else? It was worth it.")
8) The Royal Tennenbaums ("I couldn't even begin to know how to answer that question.")
9) On the Waterfront (maybe my favorite Brando film)
10) 12 Angry Men (brilliant)
11) There Will Be Blood (can't decide whether this or No Country was the best film I saw last year)
12) Donnie Darko ("How exactly does one suck a fuck?" This movie has a cult following for a reason.)
13) Lost in Translation (A really affecting film that proves what a great actor Bill Murray really is. Broke Flowers should be mentioned as well.)
14) Stone Reader (a great documentary for anyone who is also a book lover)
15) Tombstone (Is there a better western out there?)
16) North by Northwest (probably my favorite Hitchcock film, so I had to add it)
17) Mulholland Drive (I'm not entirely sure what it is that creeps me out about Lynch's films, but I'm always on the edge of my seat.)
18) High Fidelity ("Charlie! You fucking bitch! Let's work it out!" I don't know if I've ever encountered a character in film or novel I so identify with.)
19) Children of Men (doesn't get enough notability--outstanding film)
20) City of God (best movie about organized crime since the Godfather series)
21) Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (Jim Carry can act after all!)
22) Wonder Boys (Hey, I got writer's block before I finished my first novel.)
23) Good Night, and Good Luck (One of two movies on this list I'll ensure my kids see.)
24) Sideways (Another character I absolutely identify with.)
25) Cool Hand Luke ("Callin' it your job don't make it right.")
26) Broken Flowers (see Lost in Translation)
27) The Edukators (Great movie about losing your ideals)
28) To Kill a Mockingbird (the other movie my children will be sure to see)
29) Clockers (my favorite Spike Lee joint)
30) Igby Goes Down (Catcher in the Rye brought to the big screen)
31) Paradise Now (wow--rent a copy of this)
32) Buffalo 66 (really moving--how the hell did the same guy make Brown Bunny? Maybe he should stick with cameos in Jay-Z videos if that's the best he can do from here on out.)
33) Dogville (unique and disturbing)
34) The Believer (Speaking of disturbing! A true story about a neo-Nazi that was actually Jewish himself)
35) Kicking and Screaming (NOT the Will Ferrel flick, mind you. This was my life immediately after finishing college.)
36) The Proposition (best western not set in the States)

Well, I went a little over my limit, but those are, off the top of my head, some films I've seen over the course of the past couple years that have really stood out to me.

You have two on your list that I've really been wanting to see.. The Big Lebowski and City of God. Also a couple I forgot about (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and To Kill a Mockingbird).

Other than those, you've reminded me that I still have a lot of movie-watching to do. :tongue2:

Wow, that's a lot of movies to nail down, but off the top of my head...(I'm sure I forgot several and will resist the urge to edit)

- The Godfather II (Improved on the standard)
- Goodfellas (has it all)
- Raging Bull (Godfellas was great, but this was DeNiro and Pesci at their best)

- The Empire Strikes Back (ah, childhood)
- Star Wars: A New Hope (ah, childhood part deux)
- There Will Be Blood (DDL is out of his mind)
- The Big Lebowski ("What are you now? A fucking park ranger?!?", Walter Sobcheck is one of the funniest characters in cinematic history)
- O Brother Where Art Thou (Such a cool movie)
- Rocky (Best "feelgood" movie ever)
- Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas (Come on, it's HST and Depp nails it)
- Donnie Brasco (never would've guessed Depp and Pacino would make such a great onscreen duo)
- Matchstick Men (Nic Cage is really hit-or-miss, but I love this movie)
- Gladiator (if this movie doesn't get your blood pumping, uh...buy a blood pumping machine)
- Grosse Point Blank (Cool movie...awesome soundtrack)
- High Fidelity (Cusack very easy to identify with)
- Rushmore (such a great script)
- The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou ("Son of a bitch, I'm sick of these dolphins."...Bill Murray is a genius)
- Wonderboys (I'm a big Michael Chabon fan and this is a great adaptation)
- Tombstone (filled with great quotes and Kilmer's Doc Holliday is one of my favorite movie characters ever.)
- Dazed and Confused ("Alright, alright, alright!")
- Glengarry Glen Ross (Great cast, under-appreciated flick)
- Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind (Was blown away when I first saw this)
- Forrest Gump (It's fucking Forrest Gump)
- Requiem For A Dream (Dark, creepy, the best anti-drug message money can buy)

Damn you! That's so good. That should have been mine! I love the scene where the attorney instructs Thompson to throw the radio into the bathtub with him when White Rabbit peaks. I miss Hunter... just read Hell's Angels not long ago.

The Big Lebowski is on Hulu.com for free. Definitely one of the all-time classics and in my top-25 if not top-10.
