Would you sign up your child for a league that doesn't keep score or standings?

Only if it was the first year (Tee-ball, Candy League Soccer). That first year the kids should be taught about how the game is played, basic rules, etc. After that yes scores and standings should be kept. I think teaching a kid how to win and how to lose and handle disappointment are two important things that sports can do for a child.

I voted "no", but agree with exhawg. This shit totally pisses me off, though. The pussification of the human race continues...it's things like this that lead to people that can't cope in the real world. Life isn't fair, and shit happens. Teaching these things early on can do nothing but benefit kids.

Exactly. Kids need to know how to lose, and not get what they want all the time.

i really dont care but honestly things i think you learn from sports (or band or theather whatever it is)

1-teamwork
2-group dynamics
3-learning to lose- you dont have to like it but you should be able to do it with some class
4-hardwork
5-have fun
6-self improvement
7-group improvements
8-have fun
9-taking coaching
10-workign as a team
11-fun

so i think its silly but i see why some do it

As a parent and coach I agree with both sides of this argument. My son has played a sport since he was 5, he is now 10. When he started with soccer every kid on both teams knew what the score was, how many games they have won and how many goals they personally had scored. A couple of years later he moved onto football and had to play up an age and got smoked every game. This year was rough on both of us, I coached which is another subject in itself. He did learn how to lose with class and dignity. I also had to learn how to look the other way with coaches who were in it to show they were championship coaches with first and second graders. I also get frustraded with kids whose parents sign their kids up just to play and the kid has NO intrest what so ever. We still play different sports, don't want him sitting around the house doing nothing but have fun leagues and competitive leagues.

I personally feel that kids need to start in a FUNdemental league. No need for score when you are 3-6 years old. If you lose every game you fall out of love with the sport and never had a chance to like it. If you win every game you think you are better than what you really are. Then each year ratchet up the rules and competitivness. This way when it is time to get serious about sports the kids who want to play are there and the kids who just want the trophy are somewhere else. I do see a need for both since to many kids would just sit there and do nothing. So to the Y of find a rec league and play for excerise.

You can add math to that list as well... when I want to know the score of the game I'll ask the kids, every single one of them spouts off the score... if it wasn't important, why would they bother to keep score???
