2012 Defense Discussion

Roby leads the nation in PBUs by a significant margin. CB play isn't the issue. not having healthy linebackers is.

We still had some busted coverages in the secondary, and it in the PSU game Roby had at least two pass break-ups where he was beaten and flat out lucky the throw was late/underthrown. Speilman mentioned several times that he is susceptible to the double-move...

It seems to me that Withers (with his NFL experience) thought he could apply a more complex system here at OSU, than he had at UNC, due to the talent difference.

Unfortunately, for whatever reason (probably the new scheme and the fact that our players actually have to go to class), our secondary wasn't able to pick up on the schemes perfectly. It makes sense that a simplified scheme would yield improvement.

Now let's continue to play tight press coverage, take away the soft underneath and edge throws that have been carving us up all season, and hopefully get penetration by the DL. I'm a little worried about the Michigan game. Denard's ability to somehow lob passes directly into coverage without getting intercepted shows that someone is on his side - we're going to need to be at our best.

There aren't a lot of corners who aren't susceptible to the double move. Including most NFL corners.

I think sometimes people expect Roby to be some sort of Superman. He's not; just a damn fine cornerback - one of the very best in the nation.

I tthink we need to be a little more patient and realize that this is withers first year with players who barely fit his system. And we're still undefeated and made some key stops against our best competition. It took saban 3yrs to win a NC and he went 7-6 in his first year. When we start getting in more depth on our d line especially, along with the rest of the units, and we'll be great. Our 2014 class will be really big in starting to create the type of depth to compete with elite sec schools continually. The way that lsu and Alabama constantly reload their defenses is a blueprint to beating some of those teams.

Still wish we'd put the QB on his back more often but at least the tackling has improved dramatically

I agree about the tackling. And not to make an excuse, but some credit has to be given to Schelhaase for not waiting on the pass rush to get to him. He knew it was coming and kept moving his feet. The D-Line was in the backfield quite a bit today as it was.

They still had at least 3 sacks (I think) and maybe some more...

2-14 on 3rd downs
170 total yards
96 yards passing with the longest completion being 12 yards
72 yards rushing on 32 attempts (2.3 ypc) with a long of 8 yards

Their scoring drives (minus the fumble return TD) covered 39 yards, 46 yards, and 42 yards. The punted in six of their other eight possessions after five plays or fewer.

Illinois could get nothing when it mattered, even if they did wind up with 22 points. A great game by the defense.

The knocking the QB around was more a complaint about the whole season, as opposed to this game. Again though not seeing a lot of the Dlinemen flat out beating their blockers. I know they stress run contain, but on passing downs we're still not "meeting" at the QB enough. Just not seeing the 1 on 1 battles being won convincingly enough by our guys during passing situations. Possibly the personnel just isn't there to be a great pass rushing team.

A good game by the defense. I get that Illinois is not really much of a test...

#110 on passing offense (175 yds/gm)
#96 on rushing offense (96 yds/gm)
#115 on total offense (301 yds/gm)
#114 on scoring offense (18.5 pts/gm)

...but despite a few lapses, the Buckeyes held them to less than their averages and are now ranked 1st in the Big Ten in rushing defense, heading to less than 100 yds/gm. We knew that the secondary was going to be a problem and this has been made worse by injuries.

So, although I think several players are going to see major opportunities to improve (e.g., Bryant), I think it was a good day at the office.
