2012 Offense Discussion

Braxton, Guiton, then Jones.

If I had to guess RBs then Hyde, Hall, Smith, Dunn, Ball.

Im going to go out on a limb a tad for RBs and have:
Hyde
Dunn
Hall
Smith
Ball(doesn't really count since he's probably redshirting)

I have Dunn ahead because i've heard more positives about him and I have yet to hear smiths name mentioned, yet I still think smith will get minimal carries. I have hall behind dunn because I think the staff will use him more in the slot and return game. And I think dunn will be a RB coming off the bench ahead of hall due to his size and bruising playing style. Hall will be used more in space.

I've heard a lot of positives regarding Smith. Hyde is the one I've heard very little about. Maybe he's firmly locked in as the #1 and that's why it's been quiet?

Ohio State offense modeled after Oregon
April, 18, 2012
By Mark Schlabach | ESPN.com

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Ohio State fans had to figure their football team would look different under first-year coach Urban Meyer this coming season.

But Meyer said Wednesday that the Buckeyes will run a no-huddle, hurry-up offense in 2012. Quarterback Braxton Miller said Meyer wants the Ohio State offense to take 80 to 85 snaps per game and play at a much faster pace than the Buckeyes did under former coach Jim Tressel.

Think Oregon Ducks-like fast.

"All you've got to do is look at Oregon," Meyer said. "We're committed to it. We're still going to pop a huddle once in a while, but we're committed to it."

The Buckeyes bring back seven offensive starters from a team that finished 6-7 under interim coach Luke Fickell in 2011. Fickell, who took over when Tressel was forced to resign on May 30 for witholding information from NCAA investigators and OSU officials about NCAA rules violations, was retained by Meyer and will work as the Buckeyes' defensive coordinator and linebackers coach.

"It's fun," OSU fullback Zach Boren said. "It's all up-tempo stuff and stuff we're not used to doing here."

Miller, a sophomore from Huber Heights, Ohio, ran a spread offense in high school. He said he's comfortable running Meyer's system, after leading the Buckeyes in rushing (715 yards with seven touchdowns) and passing (1,159 yards with 13 touchdowns) as a freshman last season.

"It's very fast," Miller said. "The defense gets really tired. They're always complaining after practice, saying we need to slow it down. I'd compare it to Oregon."

Dave Biddle was on 97.1 The Fan 2 days ago and said our RB situation was:

Hyde
Hall - would get fewer carries than Hyde because they would split him out wide, etc.
Dunn
R.Smith

He also said that Rod isn't running 4th right now because he's been playing poorly, either. Said it was a reflection of how good Brionte has been and that he expects Dunn not to redshirt.

Just FWIW. Take it or leave it.

You might want to do yard work on Saturdays then because Miller is going to be running on called plays maybe more than ever next season. A lot of his plays this year were him checking down and running but this season's offense is supposed to have a ton of misdirection and option to go along with the passing game. He's going to be on the move 90% of the time possibly. As long as he doesnt start trying to take defenders on he'll be fine. Learn the slide and to get out of bounds when its not wide open space and he'll flourish for the next couple of years.

Tebow only ran the ball as much as he did because 1) UF didn't have anyone at running back that could be the hammer in the power run game, and 2) Tebow is a freak of nature.

yes, Brax will run the ball, but NO, Brax will not run the ball like Tebow did, and this is because Meyer has other options to take the pounding that the power game entails. Tebow WAS the power game at UF. Hyde, Smith (and even Hall- that kid plays bigger than he is) are more than capable of performing those duties.

Meyer's resume is bigger than the 4 Tebow years at UF. look at what he did with Josh Harris at Bowling Green. look at what he did at Utah. he didn't have Tebow or Harvin on those squads, yet those teams put up VERY solid numbers.

QB Running plays versus passing attempts:

T. Tebow

Sr. yr. - 69% run
Jr. yr. - 59% run
so. yr. - 60% run

QB Running plays versus passing attempts:

A. Smith

Sr. yr. - 42% run
Jr. yr. - 56% run

Coach is gonna run the crap outta Brax. For big yards. Book it.

Yes but it will be a different strategy than with Tebow. Miller's inside read running will be the counterpoint to the power game with Hyde, Smith and Dunn. He's going to hit some seams and take a few to the house (double cliche score!).

Bollman ran Miller into oblivion as well. The offense will change but the notion that a big change in workload is coming is faulty.

The difference is the entire stadium won't know where the ball is going and the backside pursuit might not crash down like a banshee out of hell every time.

If you had used "get into space" instead of "hit some seams" you could have had a triple.
