2013-14 Ohio State Men's Basketball (Official Thread)

So what are your thoughts on ND now, now that they have upset Duke WITHOUT their star player Grant who had a big 18 points against OSU?
Since we're cherry-picking, what are your thoughts on the Buckeyes now after losing by 10 at home to three-loss Iowa?

I'm ready to acknowledge that the Buckeyes really are among the top 10 teams in the nation.

I'd like to agree, but I don't see it. Top 20, perhaps. Top 10? Not buying it at this point.

Still, the highlight of my OSU days was an NIT title so we're talking about continuing a golden era of Buckeye hoops.

Clearly they aren't as good as they were at the end of last season at this point. But there's a long way to go. A few guys finding their stride shooting the ball, and this team takes off just like last year.

This team does not have a primary scorer, lacks consistent perimeter shooters, and are soft on the boards. Until someone steps up to be "the man". OSU will not be better than a Sweet 16 team at the best.

Ross is not the answer as a primary scorer. Matter of fact, I would start Loving in his place and bring Ross of the bench. At least he brings some defensive effort and continuity. As seen today, Ross is a liability with the ball in his hands and he is not very good off the dribble. He is more of a catch and shoot guy and is not very good at creating his own shot.

Thompson, Smith Jr., and Scott are inconsistent perimeter shooters while Craft has regressed since his freshman year with his shooting skills ( I have no idea who is coaching his shooting technique but it SUCKS badly). The only guy that is worth a damn on the perimeter is ADV. Yes Ross makes a nice percentage of his shots but they are more of the catch and shoot variety.

Williams and McDonald are not aggressive enough on both ends on the boards

Matta is pretty good at getting his teams through these ruts. So I want to see how this team responds from these two losses.

Props to Iowa though, they played one hell of a game.

Ross isn't usually a liability with the ball in his hands; neither are Shannon Scott nor Aaron Craft. All three were, at times, today. I wouldn't want to draw too many conclusions from that.

Buckeyes had a bad game. I'd like to see Loving get more PT also, but more because he's better able to get his own shot than anyone else on the team. I think his presence could open things up for us on O. Wouldn't mind seeing Loving and Ross on the floor together, actually. I'm still optimistic about this squad.

Starting two guards who don't shoot the 3 much is not a good combo against the zone. Della Valle needs to play more in a game like this - he can shoot and doesn't turn the ball over, two things that this team has struggled with lately.

I hope that happens too, but that really wasn't what I was responding to in my post.

You had asked how I felt about ND after they beat Duke. Well, they lost to Indiana State and North Dakota State before playing the Buckeyes. As for their big win over the Dookies, they followed it up by losing to NC State and Georgia Tech. So, to answer your original question, I'm still not impressed by Notre Dame.

It's a shame Deshaun Thomas left prematurely, only to end up playing in France. If he had stuck around for his senior season this team's prospects would be as good as any other.

Thomas is doing what he wants to do - playing basketball and getting paid. And even though it's not his top goal of the NBA, it isn't minimum wage either. I imagine he's happier where he is than he would be if he was still in Columbus. Hopefully he can still fulfill his NBA dream.

I'm going to throw in some optimism after a loss. There were points during this game that I was thinking "Man, this team could really win it all if they play like this consistently". There were other points when I was thinking, "Man, this team will barely make the tourney if they play like this consistently". Why is this optimistic? Because it's January 12th, and we've got a great meat grinder of a schedule to whip this team into shape. These are the things I think need to happen consistently for a great team to emerge:

Sam Thompson continues to evolve into an inside/outside scorer (saw some good drives against Iowa)

LaQuintin keeps up the strong 3-point shooting mixed in with some good drives (and cuts down on turnovers)

Amir/McDonald assert themselves on the boards (saw glimpses of this against Iowa)

Shannon Scott becomes a consistent 3-point shooter (haven't seen much of this yet but I think it's coming)

The defense needs to not take a day off (like today against Iowa).

Not to put words into Jake's mouth... but I'm pretty sure his point is that if Thomas would have stayed in Columbus his experience and scoring capacity would have Ohio State as one of the top 5 teams in the country, not that Thomas didn't make the best decision for him and his family.

Based on my limited observation, I believe Thomas wanted to be done with college and wanted that behind him. If he didn't want to be at tOSU any longer, its really hard to tell what a difference he would have made. If he gave the same effort he gave last year would he have made a difference? Most definitely. Probably still undefeated, ranked number 1, with a strong shot to win it all. If his heart wasn't in it, who knows. We have the players we have. GO BUCKS!
