Gentlemen BC is a small private (religious) school with a sub-par athletic department, spending little to nothing on research sitting next to a city full of ND fans.

Brilliant move. This basically ensures that east coast kids have a B1G college to play football at instead of Penn State. So Penn State's return to respectability will be even further delayed because recruits will realize they don't have to go to bumfuck nowhere in order to play big time football in front of a national audience.

I like this move for several reasons:

1) The obvious academic fit.

2) The obvious basketball fit.

3) The Big Ten secures two major television markets.

4) The Baltimore/Washington region is a huge football recruiting hotbed that currently tends to lean to the south. From 2003 to 2012, the region has produced 86 four- and five-star prospects: 50 (58%) stayed local (Maryland, Penn State, Pitt, Rutgers, Virginia, Virginia Tech); 18 (21%) went to southern schools; 9 (10.5%) went midwestern schools; and 9 (10.5%) went to other schools. Getting Maryland into the Big Ten might cause some of those kids to lean more heavily toward the midwest than the south.

5) If the conference is serious about the contiguous state rule, then Maryland allows the Big Ten to expand into Virginia, and eventually North Carolina.

Yep - I'm happy to say I was wrong. I didn't think Maryland would leave the ACC by itself, but I think the hurt feelings over Ntre Ame getting preferential treatment and their financial situation forced their hand.

It's about the next 3 moves now. The ultimate end game has to be 16 teams.

If the YES network and BTN become corporate sisters, believe me, that will change. Marketing the brand across the platform is the way to build the brand, and in this case the brand is B1G football.

There's also a substantial base of Ohio State fans in NYC. Probably the largest college fanbase there.

The brand needs to not suck, though, and Maryland and Rutgers don't give me a lot of confidence in that regard. I'd love to see UNC join, but they ARE the ACC so that would be pretty shocking.

The Ghost of Jack Tatum feels the same way about adding the State College of New Jersey to the B1G

Mostly just so he can keep fucking with Franco..
