Rugby (6N, Rugby Championship, IRB 7s, etc.)

Just to follow that impossible dream, USA rugby (at least 7s) is going to pick up speed heading into the Olympics and then explode (in a good way). My guess is that 7s is going to get as much hype and coverage as NBC can manage and is going to be the new darling sport at and out of Rio. We're semi-competitive with old-guard rugby players and a couple of outlier athletes who saw it and though it could be fun and different. When we finally start getting any kind of success recruiting kids who could be major conference athletes, we'll be elite in a hurry. Sevens doesn't take a whole lot of start-up time if you're already a quality athlete; you just go out and do your thing and then develop within the game over time. I think we'll be in the gold medal match in 2020 and win in in 2024.

The highlights of the game against Wales last night showed some poor defense and decisions. Hopefully, they get that solved in time.

The US leg of the IRB 7s (Olympic) rugby series is in Las Vegas this weekend and will be televised on NBC and Universal.

The series overall is getting more competitive (not just the same couple of teams winning everything) and the USA seems much improved since last year (doesn't hurt to have someone with speed like Carlin Isles - see wadc's post above). Check it out if you can. World's greatest sport, you won't be bored.

The Americans scored a late try in the final match of group play, then they needed the conversion to advance on points. It was from a difficult angle, but it was good.

Isles ripped off a couple of ridiculous runs to overcome an early deficit. Nice to see a good showing from our guys in Vegas.

As much as I've gone on about the series becoming more competitive (5 different winners in 5 tournament stops and impressive showings by formerly second-tier teams like Kenya, Canada, and Portugal) the Las Vegas final four was old school 7s: South Africa, New Zealand, Fiji, and Samoa.

Good to see the BlitzBoks get things turned around, Steve. Crazy that they're in second place in the overall standings with the way things have gone for them this year.

The US is always frustrating. Sometimes we look really good (and certainly much better than we used to) and then we'll suck. I was close to throwing my remote control at Luke Hume. Also, not too long ago we were consistently slightly better than Canada. They have lapped us in the last couple of years.

My understanding is that MoC is going to be playing 7s (Olympic) rugby in Columbus this summer and working with one of the top training academies. Presumably, this is to try to make a run at the 2016 Olympics. He's 29+ but doesn't have football road miles on him... and Carlin Isles is no Maurice Clarett. In my most humble opinion, he could be good enough to star in 2016, assuming that he can get onto the top US side by midway through the 2015 IRB 7s season... or, obviously, he could wash out of he doesn't put in the work.

In shape, he would be the first player we've had that's athletically on par with the best NZ, South African, and Fijian players.
