tOSU Recruiting Discussion

Ohio State is doing what other schools are doing: Evaluating and offering "out of state" kids.

The issue is that Ohio kids are "out of state" for other programs, so they seem to be ahead of OSU.

Trust the coaches, and so forth.

My (extremely early) rational wish list (assuming we end up with 18-20):

I wanted to respond to RB's early list, but I also wanted to give the 2013 class about a month to let some things play out.

I think the class will be around 20-22. I'll go with 22 just for because it lets me get more guys in, even though the class may not end up that high.

I'm going to try to keep it as semi-realistic as possible as well.

QB: Malik Zaire
QB: Mitch Trubisky
RB: Derrick Green
RB: David Williams (Elliott fits here as well, and I'm not sure which I like more).
WR: Shelton Gibson
WR: Robert Foster
TE: Josh McNeil
TE/H-Back: Mike Huerman
OL: Evan Lisle
OL: Ethan Pocic
OL: Hunter Bivin
OL: John Montelus (I think Lazard from NJ could fit here as well)
DE: Tashawn Bower (or some national kid, just had to put a name here)
DT: Billy Price
DT: Greg Webb
LB: Courtney Love
LB: Alex Anzalone
LB/Leo: Jaylon Smith
DB: Cameron Burrows
DB: Eli Woodard
DB: Caleb Day
ATH: Jalin Marshall

I think that 4th OL could be moved to another position, like wide receiver. I'm just not sure who that 4th WR would be. I think LeMay and Fulwood stay south, and Treadwell goes north.

I've seen where tOSU only expects to take 2 LB for this class as well, but I'm not sure how you turn any of those three down, especially with the versatility that Smith could bring. Love is going to be a Buckeye sooner than later, imo, and Anzalone has us and UF tied at the top for now. I'm hoping he heads our way.

If there are only 2 LB in this class, that should free up another spot for a DB. It seems pretty clear that Meyer wants a pure safety. Obviously, Thomas seems like the main target, but I think he stays with TTUN. Ask me again in a few months, and that could change since there's plenty of time to go.

David Williams has sort of blown up after that combine a few weeks ago. He's extremely explosive and could complement Green perfectly. He's also stated that he's friends with Philly Brown and that tOSU was his childhood favorite. I love Elliott's game too, but I think he may stay home and go to Mizzou seeing how his dad played there as well.

JT was a 50-50 guy down the stretch

2008 - 09 Ohio, 11 OOS - 45% local
2009 - 14 Ohio, 11 OOS - 56% local
2010 - 09 Ohio, 10 OOS - 47% local
2011 - 14 Ohio, 09 OOS - 61% local

Total: 46 Ohio, 41 OOS - 53% local

Great list....figured I might as well update mine:

QB: J.T. Barrett
QB: Malik Zaire (I hope...my favorite Ohio QB, with Trubisky a close second)
RB: Derrick Green
RB: David Williams (love that you have him on your list, I am really high on Williams)
WR: Shelton Gibson
WR: Robert Foster
WR: Uriah LeMay/Michael Parker/Marquez North/Devon Allen (think we want three total pure WR's in addition to Marshall)
TE: Josh McNeil
TE: Mike Heureman
OT: Ethan Pocic
OT: John Montellus
OT/OG: Evan Lisle
DE: Joey Bosa (this is my biggest stretch, I see Urban pulling the upset though after the Spring Game visit)
DT: Billy Price
DT: Greg Webb (I could easily see Hill from SC or
DT: Donovan Munger
LB: Jaylon Smith
LB: Alex Anzalone
LB: Courtney Love
DB: Cameron Burrows
DB: Eli Woodard
DB: Dymonte Thomas (maybe I'm delusional, but I see him flipping)
ATH: Jalin Marshall

- So many variables bc of A) UFM's recruiting ability and B) how many offers are out there. Who wins the QB battle between Trubisky/Zaire/Bailey? I think Green is close to a lock, but I could see either of Elliot or Williams in this class, possibly Mizzell...think Isaac is a scUM/ND battle unfortunately. At WR, I think we want 3 pure WR's...I see us landing Foster and Gibson, but I really think we add one more, just not sure who. I think we are in good shape with Lazard, McGovern, and Bivin, and decent shape with Gray...how many OL are we looking at taking? I think Pocic ends up in this class regardless of how many OL are committed. DL is a big mystery...I think aside from Price and Munger, we only take national elite guys...could be any of Bosa/Webb/Daniel/Gilmore/Poggi/Neal/Bower. LB is a little simpler...I think we take 2 LB's on top of Jaylon Smith (hybrid athlete). Little confusing with all the offers out but I think we are in great shape with Anzalone and Love is ours (if we take his verbal). Kind of thinking we go for Rolin, Fisher, Kalambayi, etc. and see if we can't get them before accepting Love's verbal though. At DB, it will be interesting to see how we finish at safety. I want Thomas and I'm not sure Day has a committable offer. I really like Vonn Bell, not sure we are sitting with him. Apart from Thomas and Bell, nobody seems to be on the radar at safety.

Given the chatter about Urban "going national" and passing on Ohio talent, I decided to see whether that was accurate or overblown compared to Tressel.

Ohio Top-20 lists and OSU's pursuit:

2013 - Offered T-7. Snubbed 8, 10, 13, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20... with 11 months left to offer.

2012 - Off 7 of T-9. Snubbed 5, 07, 10, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 20.
2011 - Offered T-7. Snubbed 8, 10, 11, 12, 13, 16, 17, 18.
2010 - Offered T-5. Snubbed 7, 09, 10, 12, 13, 16, 18, 19.
2009 - Offered T-6. Snubbed 7, 10, 13, 14, 16, 17, 19, 20.
2008 - Offered T-8. Snubbed 9, 11, 12, 14, 15, 18, 19, 20
