tOSU Recruiting Discussion

I've found these types of list are nearly pointless as there are dozens of names we don't even know about yet but in this case the staff really seems to have laid the groundwork already for the 2016 class.

QB - Jarrett Guarantano is the man and it's a matter of when not if.
RB - Kareem Walker and George Hill can play RB. Hill could be a pivot guy. Demario McCall is perfect for the pivot/slot role and I expect him to be a Buckeye.
WR - I agree Austin Mack and Justin Layne are the top targets and see them both picking OSU at this point. Might see a third guy if it's someone like Nate Craig-Myers, Sam Bruce, Donnie Corley or Binjimen Victor. Watch for Ahmir Mitchell here when Guarantano commits and he and Walker start to recruit other NJ talent.
TE - Can they fit all three? I think they can. Luke Farrell, Jake Hausmann and Kierre Hawkins are the trifecta.
OL - Tyler Gerald and Liam Eichenberg are the top priorities. Can be selective taking a third national guy. Staff seems to really like Michael Menet out of PA, Thiyo Lukusa out of MI and will of course stay in touch with Tommy Kraemer. They really need a center so it will be interesting to see if they think they got one in 2015...maybe Jurkovic?
DE - Need a homerun here and luckily Nick Bosa is in the on deck circle. Jonathon Cooper is in and Auston Robertson has talked about wanting to play with Mack.
DT - Gary is a top talent but I don't see him at OSU. Michael Onwenu is a target and I expect more names to emerge here because there aren't a lot so far. Prince Sammons could fit in here.
LB - Not a huge need so I see them going after one guy to with Brendan Ferns. Expect more names to emerge here to go with Tuf Borland and Carter Coughlin.
CB - Needs some pure corners as Josh Norwood and Denzel Ward are the only true corners I see in the '15 class although EGW could be as well. Really like Levonta Taylor and Jared Mayden early. Damar Hamlin has visited a couple of times.
S - Only need superstars here. Nigel Warrior out of Georgia is a kid I really like. Couple of good safety prospects down in Texas too in Brandon Jones and Eric Monroe.
K/P - Possible we see a punter in this class to replace Johnston. No need for a kicker with Nuernberger only headed into his second year.

QB 1 + RB 3 + WR 3 + TE 3 + OL 3 + DE 3 + DT 2 + LB 2 + CB 2 + S 2 + P 1 = 25

A very early question, but with Pivots tending to progress to WRs, at least Marshall seems to be. Could Hill be brought in as a Pivot or MCall, and be seen as transitioning to WR, and a guy like Jeremy Larkin be brought in as another RB. This is in the case we miss out on some WRs and because I really want Larkin in this class

I agree with all this, but Bama's outstanding recruiting pretty much guarantees we'll be seeing them in the top 10 (and likely the playoffs) for years to come.
No doubt. As @Dryden mentioned in an earlier post I think in the Saban thread, they are a couple plays from having five national titles in six years. There's a reason why 'Bammer is #1 seemingly almost every week of every year. They flat out get a metric ton of top-flight talent. They are going to be a serious player for the playoffs and national title every single year as long as they keep recruiting as they have been...

Great question that I don't know we can answer entirely at this early stage. I don't see OSU offering Larkin, but that is just my take. If they pursue a second back outside of Hill I would think it will be Robert Washington who has visited multiple times. But my understanding is that they will not be pursuing a second back and instead will focus on Hill and McCall to fill the pivot roles, where Hill could eventually end up at RB and McCall will probably fill a role similar to Jalin Marshall.

If I were going to throw out a comparison based on the current roster:

Walker = Zeke Elliott
Hill = Curtis Samuel
McCall = Jalin Marshall

All great weapons to have but each as unique skill sets. Curtis Samuel may be listed as a RB but he can't do some of the things that Zeke can do or Carlos Hyde could do. He is best used on plays that put him on the edge with the occasional inside run to keep defenses honest. McCall looks like a guy perfect for the spot Marshall plays...jet sweeps and lining up in the slot on passing downs. Walker looks like your future feature back in the power run game.

Nick Saban on schools that boast about multiyear scholarships: 'That's bullsh-t.' (USATSI)

The question in my mind - did Saban get guaranteed highly ranked recruiting classes before he won the title at Alabama? UFM did comment that 2015 recruiting was down, but of course, looking good in 2016 and 2017.

Uh, yeah. Here are his year-by-year recruiting classes per Rivals since his arrival at Alabama in 2007:

2007: 10
2008: 1
2009: 1
2010: 5
2011: 1
2012: 1
2013: 1 (OSU #2)
2014: 1 (OSU #3)
2015: 2 (OSU #9)

I don't see how he should ever lose a game. He had the #1 recruiting classes six out of seven years and "slipped" to #2 this year only because USC pulled thee 5* recruits in the 24 hours before, and during, NLOID. I've listed our class rankings for the last three season for comparison since those were Urban's three recruiting cycles.

I understand it's still very early, that's why I prefaced my last comment with that. This was just an interesting scenario that I wanted to bring up. Ive seen your comparison mentioned on another thread, and I think that's a great comparison, and something that well see in future classes as well.
And I know you previously mentioned possibly going after a 3rd WR, and figured that 3rd WR could be in the RB/Pivot mix. And though the staff should pursue Washington as a plan B, I figured this staff will also pursue a number of Plan Bs as well. Regardless, this class is setting up to be a very very good one. Anyone got ideas for names yet?

The year you probably want to look at is whenever he went to LSU, not Alabama.
LSU is similar to Ohio State in some ways... Louisiana and Ohio both produce a solid amount of talent, and there's effectively no in-state competition. With a decent coach, you should be guaranteed to put a fence up and bring in more than enough talent to at least be a regional power every year.
Prior to landing that gig, Saban was 34-24-1 at MSU and 9-2 at Toledo with 0 bowl wins, just 1 MAC title, and regularly finishing 5th or 6th in the B10 (highest was tied for 2nd the year LSU hired him)
He didn't do very well in the NFL's parity either.

All we need is McCall in this would be an amazing RB class, and probably the best in the nation by the time the seasons starts. Hill and Walker alone provide a great 1-2 punch, but McCall offers the versatility that Wilson and Marshall do, in th runs receiving and special teams game
It's already the top RB class in the country! Landing the # 1 and 7 RB's in the country already puts us in elite all time RB rankings.

This backs up my thinking that they take a maximum of three OL next year:

If I remember yesteryear correctly, JT said 3 was always the number he looked for. (If everyone stayed 5 years, that would be 15 lineman on the roster, just enough for a perfect 3 deep.) He also liked versatility (being able to switch people back and forth between offensive and defensive lines.)
