tOSU Recruiting Discussion

If I remember yesteryear correctly, JT said 3 was always the number he looked for. (If everyone stayed 5 years, that would be 15 lineman on the roster, just enough for a perfect 3 deep.) He also liked versatility (being able to switch people back and forth between offensive and defensive lines.)
I don't think Tressel liked being able to switch players back and forth from Oline to Dline, in fact, I don't think it happened at all under his tenure.

The versatility you saw in those OLines was moving the best players to LT regardless of position (Sims, Datish, Cordle) and filling in from there. The reason they needed to do that, IMO, was the three player per year plan was a horrible idea.

2002: Datish, Downing, Mangold, Sims
2003: Barton
2004: Rehring, Person, Skinner, Mitchum
2005: Boone, Cordle
2006: Browning, Smith
2007: Blankenship
2008: Adams, Brewster, Shugarts
2009: Hall, Linsley, Mewhort, Fragel (TE), Longo
2010: Norwell
2011: Bobek, Brown, Carter, Underwood

When I look back, it is almost shocking how Ohio State managed to field competitive offensive lines on championship winning teams... but not a shock that they were ripped apart by an elite DL during championships in 2006 and to a lesser extent 2007.

Kne (who was a walk on), Rehring and Person were less than ideal starters at guard to put it mildly IMO.

Sims, who is probably one of the most underrated linemen for Ohio State in the last decade, did an amazing job at LT given the circumstances but was clearly out of position there in '03 and '04.

Datish was similarly out of position at LT in '05.

Browning was painfully out of position at RT in '08.

Cordle was obviously out of position at LT in '09.

Additionally, Hall and Linsley were well on their way to bust status before the new coaching staff came in and completely rejuvenated their careers. At the same time, it's fairly certain Fragel wouldn't have been a contributor at RT without the new coaching staff.

On top of everything else, several of the multi year starters didn't progress as you would expect during Tressel's tenure.

Boone is easily the prime example in that category, although his raging alcoholism is 95% to blame. Brewster regressed significantly under extremely difficult circumstances in 2012. Shugarts had issues throughout his time at RT.

I'm not saying they weren't solid players, but they certainly didn't grow over the course of their careers as much as you'd like/expect to see.

So, in summary, the offensive line during Tressel's tenure was held together with duct tape a lot of the time. As I said, looking back it is almost amazing how much success the team had given the OL situation half the time.

I think Tressel liked versatility but used in the wrong ways, usually taking Guards and playing them at Tackle making them out of position a lot of the time. And our OL development was not the best. Leading them to being overwhelmed in both NCs and at times making bad mistakes.

I definitely like now that the staff is getting more guys that played OT in HS and being able to covert them to Guard. I like the plan @RB07OSU said with getting Eichenberg after having Gerald and then allowing the staff to be choosy on their last Olineman and choose if they even want a 3rd lineman. That's a great position to be in.

Definitely was the case with JT...even with the one NC we won, the entire starting OL was was recruited by Cooper. And as to who we swing for the fence on with the last OL, I think it can just be the best guy regardless of position. If we add Eichenberg to Prince, Feder, and Bowen, that is more than solid for the future at tackle (especially with the nation's top tackle in Myers for '17 already in the bag). Then even looking to the '14 class, you have Trout, J. Jones, and maybe Brady Taylor (one will likely slide down to guard but still).

Yeah, I think I remember him speaking of "large bodies" implying that he liked to move people back and forth from OL to DL, but in reality, no.

Looking at the 247sports 2016 player rankings, it's pretty crazy seeing OSU as favored for multiple players in the top 20 in almost every position. A lot of talent to be had in this class

I am beyond excited for the '16 class...as good as '15 was, I think the national title will yield the most benefits in the '16 and '17 class. Particularly, I really hope it helps lock in Gary. He is by far the #1 priority to the '16 class imo. But I would love to see us heavily pursue Manuel on the DL as well. We had a decent DL class in '15 and were good on numbers but I want to see a couple stars in '16. Bosa will be one (best player in the country imo) and Cooper will be a stud imo, but getting Gary or even Rochester would have me in a tizzy.

As for OL, it seems we are looking at 2-3. Would love to see us get Gerald and Eichenberg, then knock down the doors to get one of Kraemer, Menet, Bredeson, or Jauan Williams as the last guy. Menet, Bredeson, and Kraemer are longshots and it seems Williams is 50/50 at best, but I think we can pull off one of them with some work. That OL class and we are going to be SO set up front for years to come (already are truth be told).

I think this class will be Meyer's best at OSU, the amount of interest from the top 250 is the highest I can remember. This RB class will be the best collectively that OSU has ever had. The TE, DE and WR classes will all be unreal as well. How the staff finishes does at DT and CB will ultimately determine how good this class will role together filling in needs of the 15 class.

I'm with you 100%...'13 and '14 are awfully tough to beat but we are favored on some big names and are already off to such a hot start. TE and RB will be legendary (Hausmann, Hawkins, and Farrell, plus Walker, Hill, and McCall). DE will already be incredible with Bosa and Cooper. WR is wait and see but Mack and Layne would be huge. Then I would love Victor, or any of Snelson, Craig, Corley, Vasher, or Smothers.

The DT/DB recruiting will definitely define this class in great part...we are in on a ton of talent but nothing is guaranteed at all. You look at DB and you have Mayden, Brandon Jones, Warrior, Taylor, Rene, Mullen, Gardner, Speight, Hamlin, Hill, etc. and we have to at least get a couple from that list. Then at DT, you have Gary and Rochester but I do not see anyone beyond that. Really need to get active there but Gary or Rochester is a must.

I think layne and Mack are in, the 3rd reciever is a tough call at this point but they're going after a big fish here. Wonder if Drayton leaving affects Robertson, I wonder what the DE number ends up being with so much talent out there. DT and DB are tough to project at this point other than chasing the current top names, I think the staff will wait out these 2 positions based upon camp performances and senior films to better evaluate late bloomers at the position. The staff could fill the class in a heartbeat if they wanted too coming off last years body of work. I'll admit I've never been this pumped about an upcoming recruiting class. I'm more excited than the 02, 08 and 13 classes.

Again, with you 100%. Layne and Mack are likely when, not if...gives us the luxury of pursuing only the best beyond that. Robertson is committed to OSU and not a particular coach imo...I know he is not a technical commit but he will be in soon. Bosa, Cooper, and Robertson is unreal. After that, you just pursue the tops in the country or call it a day. I consider Sammons a future DT, so that does not impact the DE spot imo. But a class of Bosa, Cooper, Robertson, Sammons, and Gary would be off the charts. Could be one for the books.

That took a lot of research so "thank"s for that.
Does this blow up the theory that we never had enough offensive lineman?
Bollman was always getting blamed for not having enough guys.

I see a lot of talk about the TE, RBs, DL, etc for 2016 but don't forget QB. If we get Guarantano I am going to be jacked because I think he has the makings of being one of the all time best QBs tOSU will have ever had. He is going to be a stud.
