Though he was a couple ticks of the stopwatch slower, Adkins was more powerful and explosive and, at the end of the day, the 228 pound, 5’ 11 1/2” linebacker from Naples earned a camp-high SPARQ Rating of 101.7 – compared to a SPARQ Rating of 100.8 for D.J. Williams.
The most heralded of those players is defensive end Spencer Adkins, the highest rated player at the recent Nike-Rivals100.com camp, Florida's fifth-best college prospect according to floridakids.us and the object of desire of every major college in America.
Adkins says he'll try to keep that out of mind this year.
"I'm not going to pay attention to all the hype," he says. "I want to make the plays I'm supposed to make and keep my head on straight."
The unit plans on giving a little more this season in hopes of winning a state championship. In their Class 5A title game loss to Daytona Beach-Mainland, the Golden Eagles gave up 24 points, the second-most they allowed in 2003. So the defense, who many consider to be the best, plans on only getting better
Adkins says the group has business it has to settle.
"We're going to work a lot harder now," he says. "We had a chance at a ring last year. This year, we're going to finish it."
