CORAL GABLES - Colin McCarthy's first experience in a varsity game at Clearwater Central Catholic in 2002 was nerve-wracking. A backup quarterback, he switched to linebacker because he was eager to get on the field after a few games on the sideline.

The opponent was North Florida Christian, led by senior Ernie Sims, the nation's top recruit. Sims, now a linebacker with the Philadelphia Eagles, had led his team to four state titles and was a standout running back.

"He was a freak," said McCarthy, who at the time weighed 165 pounds, but he finished with 10 tackles. "I had a few tackles on him. I'm not going to say I didn't."

Now a fifth-year senior linebacker at the University of Miami, McCarthy leads the Hurricanes (7-4) with 95 tackles going into the final two games of his career: Saturday's against South Florida (6-4) and a bowl game, likely either the Champs Sports Bowl or the Sun Bowl.
