'06 OH WR Josh Chichester (Louisville signee)

:sad2:

That sucks. Is there the possibility he gets his grades back up by the end of the school year and makes admissions by the summer? That would make his playing football this season near impossible, but he might be available for hoops this season and football next season. How does this type of thing work at tOSU?

I'm guessing noone can say this is "concrete" until an official quote/press release/etc. has been released right?

Whether or not he gets to get into Ohio State, I hope this kid gets his academics in order. Even though it looks as if he passed NCAA Clearinghouse admissions so they might not be THAT bad......

Two things that strike me about all this.

1 - We hear complaints about increased academic stringency (higher than NCAA Clearinghouse" thresholds) on many fan boards these days - with those requirements causing one or other prospects to take circuitous routes to colegge, or enrol at other D-1A institutions. That same theme is heard over on the U of L board -- to whit the Big East is generally trying to impose such an increased stringency across the conference. Does this mean Josh may find a lesser version of the same hurdle, or simply the same hurdle in any attempt to gain entry to U of L?

2 - Those fans (largely elsewhere) who bemoan the increased stringency of entry requirements are still not getting it. The underlying issue here is the forthcoming imposition of scholarship reductions on colleges, because of APR/GSR. Those who continue to roll the dice on a student that has not demonstrated a high likelihood to graduate college are simply indulging in risk-taking behavior.

Good points. What always interests me is the call for more stringent entrance requirements then at recruiting time the hope that an admissions office will let someone go because they play a high-profile sport. The scholarships granted relative to graduation rates make it extremely important to be even more vigilant in pursuing and enforcing higher standards for acceptance. What becomes the issue is how recruits will deal with this at the high school level. As a teacher and coach I see too many of these athletes poo-poo away their freshmen and sophomore years of high school only to realize too late that they can't recover in time to gain eligibility. The perception among too many is that they will be taken care of if they are good enough. It is starting to bite many in the butt. High school athletes and their families need to understand that they need to take care of their academic house early and remain committed to it. BTW, in general, not only does it produce better student-athletes, it produces better people.

now what? We'll continue to play football somehow. Roy Hall was barely used this year, and we had a pretty good offense.

can't fault the staff for losing josh... however they may be content with Small and Johnson in this class. We have Robiskie and Hartline for big WRs (soph and frosh respectively). Clearly they wanted Josh, he didn't hold up his end of the bargain... and he was not replaced.

We have done quite well with fast undersized WRs, and with Hartline we will have size along with speed.

Good luck to Chichester. Nate, I think we get the point that you're devastated over your NCAA 07 loss.
