'08 OH TE/DE Kevin Koger (Michigan signee)

Great post Glass City Buck...that is some solid stuff, not just some wild guess based on a key chain.

Unfortunately, some gurus are no better...I just read where Dave Telep made a prediction about a recruit based on the shorts he was wearing at the NBAPC.

Solid stuff GCB.

I also understand that he has not heard much from Coach Carr, while Coach Tress calls him quite a bit.
Carr has taken a somewhat diminished role across the board from my observation, which may be to ease the transition process when he retires. If a recruit is swayed by English, it's easier to retain him if/when Carr retires.
The one thing however he is concerned about is tOSU switching him to play DE. Seems like he wants to play TE.
With Koger & UM, he would make their 3rd/4th* TE verbal in 2 years. At OSU, he'd make our only TE verbal in 2 years. Plus, I like our track record compared to UM's when it comes to promised positions.

* - Depending on whether you count Webb. I don't think OSU will use Stoneburner as a pure TE even if he grows larger.

If he is set on playing TE, it shouldn't be very hard to promise him that position. Strictly based on HS film, Koger looks better than any of the TE prospects out there, and that includes Ruldolph. Ruldolph is a great fit from ND's scheme, but from a pure athletic standpoint, Koger has the upper hand, and it's not close. I know that the first couple of clips showing him splitting the safeties were against HS safeties, but they were still safeties.

seems to me he has a lot better chance of playing TE at OSU as we have no other legit TE targets this year and UM seems to be the one talking DE to him more.

UM is actually very thin at TE. Massey is currently our only decent TE and he's been battling injuries and is also going into his final season at UM. Carson Butler got booted and we were definitely riding on him being good, so his departure leaves a major hole for a team who likes to use multiple TE sets. We lost a good one with Butler, so unless Martell Webb (who we might potentially use at WR) or Steve Watson (true TE, but not nearly as athletic as Koger) wreck havoc, we'll need all the help we can get at this pos. Trust me, we use our TEs if we can, so the more the merrier. Not to mention we've recruited pretty well at DE lately. If UM picks up Koger and he excells and really wants to play the TE position, then I'm sure UM will easily make room. He looks more athletic and powerful than any other TE on our roster. Either way, I think he's got a solid chance to get solid PT on both teams because of depth and TE use. Win/Win situation for Koger IMO, but of course I'd rather see him in blue.

Rudolph is hands down the best TE in the country IMO...Not a discredit to Koger, but I don't think that Koger is there in terms of all around ability at the TE position as Rudolph...

I agree. Rudolph is my #1 in Ohio, but that is another story. I think strictly talking TE, Rudolph. When you factor in the potential at DE though, the advantage moves just as much over to Koger. (I know he wants to play TE)

Agreed...Rudolph is the best pure TE in the country. Koger may have more athletic ability but Kyle is the better all around TE at this point in time. Koger has more potential imo but either way, I would love to have Koger.

And which abilities are you referring to?

Speed? Not a knock at Rudolph at all, the kid lines up at WR, and can use his size to go up and make the grab over smaller DBs, but you won't ever mistaken him for a true wideout. Koger adjusts to the ball like a WR and runs with it like a deer, almost like an oversized RB out there. And Koger can use his speed to split the safeties. Do you see that on Rudolph's film?

Blocking? Rudolph is a great blocker, which will make him almost a perfect fit for ND's system, or for that matter, OSU's. But let's not forget that Koger is a dominanting DE as well. So in terms of the ability to play in the trenches, I don't see either side having an upper hand in this one.

Athleticism? Rudolph is extremely athletic for his size, and uses his height well to make catches, but not as fluid as Koger when it comes to making body adjustments for tough catches and positioning for yards after the catch. And look at the way Koger runs, the kid has very decent top speed and runs with authority, like it's his business to carry the ball.

Both have the potential to be great players, but from a pure athletic standpoint, Koger is the better athlete and has a higher ceiling.

Blocking and playing defensive end are totally different..

I mean, blocking is very VERY technique heavy, whereas people like The Freak can excel in the NFL on almost pure athleticism.

True, but who's prepared to say that Rudolph is heads and shoulders above Koger because of blocking? Rudolph is an excellent blocker, but it's not like a world of difference there compared to an equal prospect at the high school level.

Rankings should contain a disclaimer: "For entertainment purposes only."

Its really hard to make a claim about any recruit being the best in the nation...especially a concrete statement of such. Too many variables...too many kids not getting exposure.

Anyway...if you guys want to continue this discussion, I can split it off. Otherwise, let's roll on back to Kevin Koger please.

The fact that his decision has taken this long bodes well for tOSU. I'm not saying that we get him, but he is a life long Michigan fan and has not yet pulled the trigger.

I also think his chances of staying at TE with tOSU are excellent. Take Roy hall for example. Roy was probably better suited at TE but insisted on remaining at WR.

Sam Webb is auditioning for a job at :sick1: with this one...

Scout $

Sam Webb of GBW's ultra-quick rebutal piece to the Dave Berk update. The article is slanted so heavily (even spinning quotes Kevin gave Berk) that it is almost not worth reading.
