'09 TX QB Russell Shepard (LSU Signee)

Houston Chronicle: Cy Ridge's Shepard picks LSU

Cy Ridge's Shepard picks LSU
Top-rated player in state passes on 34 other schools

By BRANDON C. WILLIAMS

Cypress Ridge quarterback Russell Shepard, regarded as the top high school player in the area, announced Monday that he would commit to reigning national champion LSU.

"LSU is a good school and a good fit for me," Shepard told Scout.com. "The recruiting stuff was getting hectic, so I wanted to get it out of the way early so I could focus on my upcoming season. I know LSU is where I want to go."

The 6-2, 185-pound Shepard chose the Tigers over the likes of Texas, Texas A&M, Florida and Michigan, who were among the 35 schools that offered him a scholarship.

Times-Picayune: Highly rated Texas QB says he's going to LSU

Highly rated Texas QB says he's going to LSU
Shepard becomes the Tigers' seventh commitment for 2009

Highly regarded Texas high school quarterback prospect Russell Shepard will tell you luck had nothing to do with him becoming commitment No. 7 in LSU's 2009 recruiting class.

"It was a gut feeling for me," Shepard said Tuesday in explaining his decision after committing via telephone to LSU Coach Les Miles on Monday night. "(LSU is) an amazing program. Their tradition is outstanding. The way I look at it, the school's not lucky, I'm lucky to be getting a chance to play in a program like theirs."

[...]

"It's just a good opportunity for me," Shepard said of LSU. "They are very (thin) in the depth chart at quarterback. I think I can make an immediate impact. If Ryan Perrilloux is there or not, I still will have an opportunity to come in and make an immediate impact, with him being a (senior) and me being a freshman. I feel like I can come in and (eventually) be the starting quarterback at LSU."

Better than Pryor, you say? Maybe at WR. Good call Luginbill.

Today was not exactly a good day for the top quarterbacks of the Class of 2009.

Earlier, it was reported that top dual-threat QB Tyrik Rollison was transferring from Auburn to Sam Houston State.

Now comes word that the top-rated signal caller from that class will no longer be playing the position.

LSU head coach Les Miles announced this afternoon that Russell Shepard will be moving full-time to wide receiver. While he was listed as a quarterback last season, Shepard did not throw a pass and spent most of his limited time on the field as the point man in LSU's version of the Wildcat.

This year, all of Shepard's efforts will be concentrated on learning the receiver position.

"He's all at wide receiver and in his mind," Miles said according to the Shreveport Times. "He'll get ball handling and running back play as a sidelight to his receivers position.

"This gets him on the field every down. When you're at (situational) quarterback, it's very difficult to be on the field every play. So if he starts with base at wide receiver, then we think that it allows us to play him."

Miles did leave the door slightly ajar for Shepard to possibly see some "situational" time at his old position, but the majority of reps will go to starter Jordan Jefferson and backup Jarrett Lee.

I heard the move has nothing to do with Shepard's arm, though. Apparently his clock management and two-minute-drill skills are entirely deficient. Since Loose Morals is a complete failure in this department, too, they had to move him to insert someone mildly competent in terms of managing an offense when it matters most.
