'09 VA QB Kevin Newsome (Penn State signee - transfer to Temple)

This offer came as a HUGE surprise to me. With Gardner, Macon, Roback, Watkins and a few others in the '10 class, and with the legacy kid in '11, Miller, in addition to Pryor, I didn't expect anybody to be offered in '09. Then again, we're dangerously thin at QB next year with just Bauserman as the backup. Maybe Orhian Johnson will take some reps, but he'll be in the unenviable position of taking reps at a position where everybody hopes he doesn't have to play. Maybe that's the staff's reason for offering Newton. If he comes here, which is unlikely, he will be redshirted, but I'd feel much better with a redshirted guy than with nobody else on the roster.

BN$--Kevin Newsome Talking Ohio State Official Visit

Kevin says he is favoring Vandy, PSU, and Virgina Tech but he is open to coming to Columbus to redshirt and get better under TP.

If he's willing to redshirt here in lieu of not having to do so at Vandy, PSU, and Virgina Tech, he has to be seriously considering us.

Vandy...eh, they have had a few "upset" years but they are still Vandy. VT has Tyrod Taylor but they can sell him possibly leaving next year...but I'd guess he stays all four after this mess of a season. PSU have Clarke and Devlin...redshirt or not, he has his work cut out for him.

Yeah, I really do not see how our situation isn't better than ANY of those 3... except that VA Tech is close to home. However, with the direction our offense is moving towards using a dual-threat QB and the talent we are brining in on offense, one needs only to look back to 2006 to see what we can do on offense with an experienced QB and playmakers at the RB and WR positions, not to mention our STUD lineman we are brining in now. When he gets ready to take the reigns of OUR team, he'll have all that.

I would think Penn State would also redshirt Newsome. Clark will be a senior next year, with Devlin #2 as a junior.

I thought Clark was a Senior this year?

Nope. He got a redshirt granted.

Penn State Football - philly.com

Quarterback Daryll Clark has officially earned his extra year of eligibility, according to team spokesman Jeff Nelson. "Daryll has completed more than 85 percent of the credits required to earn his degree in Telecommunications and will be eligible to play in 2009," Nelson wrote in an e-mail today. "He is on schedule to graduate in December 2008, in 3 1/2 years. He will enroll in a second degree or graduate school in the 2009 spring semester."
Last week, Clark said that he was on track to have the extra year and that he was going to take it. Clark spent a year at The Kiski School in Western Pa. as a freshman non-qualifier before he enrolled at Penn State. Because he earned 80 percent of his credits before the start of this semester he was rewarded with the year he lost while at Kiski. This is good news, obviously, for Clark, who felt like he needed another year to groom for the pros. Needless to say, this is bad news for sophomore Pat Devlin, who may have to wait until his senior year to be named the full-time starter.

We need to blow his mind with the atmosphere. Coach Tressel needs to break out the stats. 4 conference championships in a row!!! 4 BCS bowls in a row!!! Weather will not be a factor. TP needs to put up some great number sand then tell him he's next. IMO VT and OSU will be the teams to beat after the visit.

I didn't realize this extra year was granted to him. I figured it was a given he was only a junior. Now I understand the confusion. Looks like Pryor has a chance to not only take PSU down at home, but do it with Clark coming back for his extra year. Interesting.

Regardless, looks like Newsome is waiting for PT if he wants to play for either school. Good news for us.

Keeping it classy

I'm really thankful to the posters in this thread who have kept it classy. I was looking through the scUM boards for some info on this guy, and they are completely trashing the kid. And "kid" being the key word here.

Thank you guys. :oh:
