Evaluation

James is an athletic offensive lineman that has good foot agility. He is a tall and lean offensive tackle that is a towering player on the field. Leads with his hands in both the run and pass game. Gives a good solid punch and jolts the defender with the initial blow. Comes out of his stance a little high in the run game but takes good steps and rarely gets beat at the line of scrimmage. Tends to bring his feet together after the first couple of steps and as a result sometimes loses control of the defender. Needs to work the hands into the frame of the opponent and lock the defender up. Very impressive in combination blocking by staying square and chipping off to the next level. Steps down to the inside hard to pick up line stunts; powerful enough to jam a scraping linebacker on the blitz. Athletic when pulling and trapping; technically sound with footwork and can adjust course to defensive movement. Very sound pass protector that kicks back quickly and stops the initial charge of the rusher. Mirrors the rusher and can shuffle feet to maintain positioning. As in the run game, needs to lock up the pass rusher using his hands and long arms. Must be careful to not get over-extended due to height. James is a very good offensive lineman that has the athleticism to really excel at the next level. He has a great frame to build on in the future.

St. Xavier junior OL Matt James (6-8, 280) will reportedly visit Vanderbilt this weekend, according to Rivals.com. The Web site said he could possibly visit Notre Dame the weekend of March 28. The report mentioned how James and Kyle Rudolph keep in touch via text message.

James, one of the nation's top offensive linemen in the 2010 class, has several major Division I offers. James reportedly told IrishIllustrated.com that he is starting to narrow down his list.

UC, Ohio State, Notre Dame, Florida and other schools are among the early favorites. But, James said he is keeping his options open and not giving a timeline on any decision.

James also mentioned how UC has shown a strong interest. "Cincinnati is probably recruiting me the hardest, because they are local," James told the Web site.

Man I know UC is turning into a good program and I like it, but I would sure hate to lose this kid to UC. With the line recruits that we have brought in the past two years, adding this kid would just add to the line improvement that we have been missing the past couple seasons. Hopefully he is the top line target unless they feel they have a good chance of snatching the Henderson kid form Minnesota and maybe scUM now.

St. X junior OL commits to all-star game
By Mike Dyer ? [email protected] ? April 1, 2009

St. Xavier junior offensive lineman Matt James has committed to play in the 2010 U.S. Army All-American Bowl in San Antonio, St. X football coach Steve Specht said in a text message this morning.

The prestigious all-star game will be Jan. 9, 2010 at the Alamodome in Texas. It will be televised live on NBC starting at 1 p.m.

James, who is 6-feet-8 and 280 pounds, is the first St. X player to be invited to the game. The All-American Bowl will have its 10th annual game next January.

?Matt's very honored to be considered for the game,? Specht said by e-mail. ?That's the best thing about Matt ? he is incredibly humble and honestly works as hard as he can every day to get better. I think the selection is a no-brainer simply because he is a tremendous talent, but he's an even better kid.?

Or it could mean that the pipeline of Cincinnati athletes at parochial schools is still strong. St Xavier(along with Elder, Moeller and LaSalle) almost always sends high caliber players to ND.
