'12 PA RB Rushel Shell (Pitt Signee; Transfer to West Virginia)

Gotta hope havin' two RB's already doesn't hurt our chances with him...

Yeah, I'm really torn on this. I REALLY want to see Shell in our backfield, but 2012 is going to be a tight year with numbers. Considering the big haul we're expecting to take along the DL from all that in-state talent, plus the necessity of bringing in a larger-than-usual number of OL, a third RB seems like a luxury we may not be able to afford. And that is definitely a bummer, because Shell seems to be the most explosive of the three RBs.

Unless there is a mass exodus at the RB spot, I think there is roughly a 0% chance of OSU landing Shell...not even sure they bother pursuing with limited schollies available and the number of RBs that will be on the roster in 2012 (Berry, Hall, Hyde, Smith) and two more already committed.

I concur.
Don't see this kid coming, and honestly don't know if I'd want him(ok, let me rephrase that, I'd love to have Shell go to the Bucks, but it would allmost be a waste for him with our depth). With so few schollies let's seal up our lines first. RB won't be a need for a very long time.

It's a matter of confidence... If you truly believe you are THE BEST.. you don't care about the roster... and who else has verballed... because if you are THE BEST... You will play

But it's foolish to go to a school thats already 5 deep at your position. No matter if you're the BEST, those numbers still don't work out in your favor. And there are other positions on the field that we need to replace upperclassmen. Regardless if he's the best or not, we still need Linemen, which is where NCs are won. I'm fine with Dunn and Ball, let's move on to focusing on DL, OL and S

Maybe if their are some transfers. But right now the staff needs to save schollies for the Oline. It would be crazy if we had more RB's then O-linemen. None of theses running backs will be good without a good O-line.

I'll trust the staff and their decisions when it comes to handing out offers.

Top RBs in the Class of 2012

Which rushers will head the recruiting lists entering their final high school season?
Dave Miller

2. Rushel Shell: 5-11, 215-pounder from Aliquippa, PA

Status: Undeclared

Considering: Pittsburgh, Penn State, Ohio State, Tennessee and Florida

Also recruited by: West Virginia, Alabama, Virginia, North Carolina, Cincinnati and UCLA

2010: Carried 324 times for 2,475 yards (7.6 average) and 27 touchdowns. Added 12 catches for 198 yards and three more scores. Was a Class AAA all-state selection and the area player of the year.

2009: Rushed 250 times for 2,465 yards (9.9 average) and 31 touchdowns.

Shell, who also plays basketball at Hopewell High School in the Pittsburgh area, is an elite back who is a big fan of Ohio State quarterback Terrelle Pryor. The two are friends, which leads many to speculate that the Buckeyes could be frontrunners despite the fact that Pryor won?t be on campus if and when Shell arrives. In addition, Jim Tressel and Co. already have commitments from Bri?onte Dunn and Warren Ball ? two of the best running backs in the country.

Shell's top five

I have a small story in tomorrow's Post-Gazette on Rushel Shell's recruitment and how he attended the Duke-North Carolina game a few weeks ago as part of North Carolina's "junior day."

Part of the story is Shell said he has a list of top five schools. His list has changed a little from football season. Ohio State no longer is in his top five. Pitt is in it. See tomorrow's Post-Gazette for details.

Recruiting Report: Shell enjoys 'Tobacco Road' rivalry
Friday, March 18, 2011
By Mike White, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

One of the most heavily recruited football players in the WPIAL over the past decade recently attended what he called "the most exciting sporting event I've ever been to."

It was a Duke-North Carolina basketball game.

Rushel Shell, the star junior running back at Hopewell High School, attended "junior day" March 5 at North Carolina. Like most colleges, North Carolina invites some junior prospects to visit their campus on a particular date. Part of the day was attending the Duke at North Carolina basketball game.

"Just that [Duke-North Carolina] rivalry and all the fans. It was something," Shell said. "The student section made it even crazier, with all the chants."

Shell plays basketball at Hopewell and also plans to play AAU basketball again this spring for the Crons organization. He has played AAU basketball for a number of years.

Shell went to North Carolina with his father and younger brother. Pitt had its "junior day" the same day, but Shell cautioned not to read too much into his North Carolina trip, even though the Tar Heels are one of his five favorites.

"It was just a coincidence type of thing," Shell said. "I was free at the time and North Carolina wanted me to come down. The game was going on, too, so I said why not? It's a once-in-a-lifetime chance."

Shell has scholarship offers from colleges across the country and said he most likely will not make a college decision before the start of his senior season. He does have a top-five list, though.

"Right now, it's Alabama, Florida, North Carolina, Pitt and Oregon," Shell said.

Shell had always said Ohio State was one of his favorite schools, but the Buckeyes are no longer in the top five. Neither is Penn State.

"I have no leader," Shell said. "Right now, I just want to hang out and be a kid. When May comes along, I plan on sitting down with coaches, talking to them and narrowing things down. Maybe midway through the season, I'll commit somewhere."

Without any diesrespect to Dunn (for making added offers @ RB) or Shell(for taking so long to offer), I would say heck yes we move on Shell. Not sure why we hadn't but the staff may see Dunn's actions and respond in kind. I mean why should a player be able to shop around after a verbal while the school stands by? Obviously the situation stinks because it would be great to have both, but we all know that isn't going to happen.
