'13 FL P Johnny Townsend (Florida Signee)

Orlando Sentinel - Boone punter Johnny Townsend signs with Florida over Ohio State

2/7

Orlando Boone High punter Johnny Townsend, after weighing numerous options, has decided to stay close to home and has signed with the Florida Gators.

Townsend, one of the top punters in the nationa who was a U.S. Army All-American, was committed since August to go to Ohio State, but given other opportunities, he decided he wanted to play football closer to family, said his father Clay Townsend on Thursday afternoon.

Townsend averaged 43.6 yards per punt during his senior season and his near flawless delivery gives him impressive accuracy with his kicks. He was also a Class 8A All-State selection, played in the Central Florida All-Star Game and was named to the Sentinel's All-Central Florida team.

Unfortunate downside of having unexpectedly explosive late-in-the-game recruiting success. I can't blame either Townsend or the Buckeye coaching staff for this, but I'm sad that Johnny won't be punting for the Bucks.

Best wishes to him in Gainesville, and I'll be following his performance with great interest.

It would be interesting if an article comes out detailing what happened.

In any event, good luck to Johnny.

Kinda doubt it. Looks like the Townsend's were gracious enough not to badmouth whatever happened here...it would be naieve to look at our late and unexpected success with Wilson, Bell, and Clark, and then say it had nothing to do with Jacobs and Townsend not getting into the class. Unfortunately, I think we lost a great talent here and I hope we have someone lined up. On the plus side, guys like Wilson and Clark feasibly make punting seem alot less likely in the near future  Good luck Mr. Townsend.

Yeah, I understand the business decision behind this, but I sure would like to have this guy in our class. I guess I am still stuck in the old JT mode of the punt being the most important play.

Everybody wondering what happened.... Wanting to find out what the story is. Maybe, just maybe he just changed his mind and wanted to go to Florida. He said he has been a Gator fan all his life. His parents went there. His brother goes there. Close to home. Not everything has to be full of drama. From what has been said so far, no one at tOSU asked him to grey shirt or pulled his ride. If he wanted to come here there would have been space by August. There is always attrition. Could be he just had a change of heart and wanted to stay home.

The thing that makes me wonder is that Florida has 4 punters on the roster. One for a fact is on scholarship and is an upcoming junior that has played last two years.

One has a profile that is a walkon but the other 2 don't say walkon or scholarship but they are both underclassmen.

Andy Groom and Ryan Pretorius were both walk-ons. Sucks that we didn't have space to land Townsend but we'll find someone who can punt.

For what it is worth, a poster over at 11w said that the staff is impressed with walk-on Kevin Neihoff. I would imagine at this point the Bucks will immediately look to bring in a preferred walk-on to bolster the roster. Between Epi, Neihoff, and perhaps some other competition, hopefully we will have a servicable punter.
