'18 OH SG Dane Goodwin (Ohio St. Decommit, Notre Dame Verbal)

Nothing to be picky about, either. Goodwin is a coach's dream, having the size and skill of a DI player while growing up a coach's son. I'm sure Holtmann is pleased to have Dane, and Dane commented on Holtmann:

“I definitely think he’s on the right path,” Upper Arlington guard Dane Goodwin told Bucknuts.com this morning. “He’s had a great tenure at Butler. He’s won a lot of games there. They showed last year when they had a great team and made a run in the tournament.

“Overall, I think it’s a good hire.”

“Monday was unexpected,” Goodwin said. “I think that caught everyone by surprise. It was kind of hard to accept that.

“This week has been kind of hectic. But the right decision was made, hopefully.”

Not the most ringing endorsement, but Dane is undoubtedly up in the air after the firing, the hiring process, and the loss of Bazley and Ahrens in his class. Sounds like he's all-Buckeye, though.

Just saw that. I wonder if the Young commitment has anything to do with this decommit. He was my favorite recruit of the 2018 class and I hope that he reconsiders if the offer is still good. I like him much better than Bazley and Ahrens.
I dont think Young has anything to do with it... not sure why it would.

OSU is still expected to be a major player, so we'll see if he ends up back in the fold. But for now...

Looks like better opportunities came knocking maybe?

I think Holtmann will have tOSU "back" in a few years, Notre Dame and Nova are contenders right now though if you want to win and not be part of a rebuild project

He committed to Ohio State very early while he was in the ninth grade and I really think that he loved Ohio State being a local Kid. I just wonder how his conversation went with our new coach that made him think about his commitment. I think that he knew that this program was not going to be a contender a long time ago but he stayed committed under Matta. I just hope that he recommits.

Agreed. He would have been gone a long time ago if he wanted to avoid being part of a rebuild project.

He knew how Matta was going to use him. A new coach comes in with a different system and maybe a different vision for how he would be used, so now he's weighing his options.

Like I said in the recruiting thread, he probably felt like Holtmann was recruiting over him, and the conversation did not go well. I really don't know what Holtmann said to lose Dane (and make no mistake, he lost him), but he fumbled this one. Dane is a coach's kid, a big winner at the AAU national level, and shows more and more athleticism as he has aged before our eyes. I wish him the best of luck; I don't see how he ends up at OSU at this point. Again, Dane was the one who stayed committed and made comments of waiting on meeting Coach Holtmann. I am disappointed, big time.

I will try not to blow this out of proportion but this SUCKS.

We are trying to get to a place where we can play 3-guard and re-establish our Ohio presence and we lose our lone commitment from the 2018 glass, a T100 Ohio SG. That is not good. Holtmann would be foolish to have kind of pushed Dane out. It sucks to lose the bird in the hand. We now need to start from scratch in recruiting 2018 guards (and players). In some ways that can be helpful for a new staff but Dane is a talented Ohio player who I think is a great fit for Holtmann. I hope we get him back.

I won't say this destroys the momentum boost from the Kyle Young flip but it definitely hurts. The staff had a lot of work to do in the 2018 class before, now they have a ton because at this moment they have no SGs for 2018-2019. The only very minor positive I see is an even wider open opportunity to pitch some of these other OOS SGs they are recruiting and then hopefully managing to get Dane back in the fold after that.

And I totally understand Dane decommitting from a staff that never really recruited him (just because he's been committed to OSU since elementary school, it feels like). It's just the timing that feels a bit strange, because I really thought he would connect well enough with this staff to stick with a commitment that he hasn't wavered from even when our program was heading down the tubes, even in the immediate wake of the Matta firing. Of the SGs we have offered, I think he is the best prospect after Muhammad. I really hope we get Dane back.

"To be honest with you, I think when you come in it's tough to assume that anything is the same," assistant coach Ryan Pedon said. "When you have a whole new staff the slate is wiped clean. What's the vision gonna be for this program? Who are we gonna recruit? What are we gonna value? Despite the talent, it has to be talent that fits for us."

5 scholarship spots available for 2018, and he suggests Dane might not be talent that fits for them? I don't see anybody else in the room, so I assume that's who he's talking about.
