2004 Spring Practice (official thread)

Spring notes from Spielman

he just mentioned on 1460 some of the things he is hearing from the Spring

* Boeckman could be an "X" factor in the QB battle- he is looking very good
* some of the defensive players that have stood out include Carp, Schlegel, Kudla and EJ Underwood
* Roy Hall has looked good
* Oline- it is too early to tell on their development

I didn't catch his whole analysis so I may have missed some :)

If we can simply maintain our level of defense while we hit open receivers on offense, along with getting consistent OL play, then we are going to be next to impossible to beat.

it could get real interesting if Boeckman can make a run at the starting job, I think they need to get Marcel Frost on the field anywhere possible, I have heard that even last year he was pushing the first team around.

:scum4:

Hoepfully we'll get some word on how our punting situation is ahaking out.

Because of the emphasis JT puts on the importance of field position, I really hope Huston or Trapasso can keep the tradition of great punters going this year.

They have some enormous shoes to fill but I don't think one of them having a decent season is too much to ask.

Sears: Thanks. Hmmm, now he may have two years to earn that schoolie...

Seriously, we need to sit back and relook at just how well we've been off on both sides of the kicking game the last two seasons. We had the best place kicking/punting tandem in the nation in both 2002 (Nugent/Groom) and 2003 (Nugent/Sander). It appears from this that it's better to have separate place kickers and punters rather than having the same individual do both. Doing so allows the player to focus solely on his "specialty", be it field goals or punting, rather than having to practice at both.

This is great stuff .. did Frost redshirt last year? He's only a Freshman, eligibility-wise, correct? I don't recall him on the field at all last year.

There's nothing better than seeing the younger kids mature from one season to the next, and then all of a sudden are bad-asses.

No doubt, we've been extremely spoiled.

What coach works with our punters and kickers? Anyone know?

You gotta think that they can mold Trapasso or Huston into a decent punter based on what they've done in th past with our kickers/punters (Andy Groom goes from walk-on to All-American, "Baron Von Shankenstein" BJ Sander earns Ray Guy Award, Mike Nugent earns All-American honors after a shaky 2001 season).

Yes, Sloop, Marcel is a redshirt freshman.

I'd like to see Boeckman redshirt myself. But if he really is the best man for the job, he should be the QB. It just seems as if a guy in his situation would have to be clearly and overwhelming superior to Zwick and Smith to get the job.

Nix: "I'd like to see Boeckman redshirt myself."

Can he even redshirt after gray-shirting? I wouldn't think that'd be feasible or good for the kid even if you were allowed to do that. In that situation, he'd be a Senior in college and a Sophomore eligibility-wise in three seasons.
