2005 Winter Conditioning (official thread)

Guys not mentioned by OSU:

Frost
Arden
Roberts
Lukens
Turano
Thoma
Skeete
Pettrey
Cordle - Thought he was enrolling early.
The problem is that BrutusReport only projects where these guys are going to play and assumes they're available for the Spring. It also assumes where the incoming freshmen are going to play.

Couple of things to realize... if these lists are guesses and not actual fact than they are clearly only for ratings...

IF they aren'ts ure where they want to play Nicol (maybe switch back to D, who knows) they wouldn't put him on there.

The reason we won't have Haw/JamO back at KR is that its a very difficult position. And if you are inexperienced, its much easier to fumble or make mistakes at the position. IMO that's why we did not see Ginn at KR last year.

Didn't Patterson move to DT last year, or am I an idiot?

Patterson did play DT last year, and not as much as many of us thought he would. I think he's always been viewed as quick & versatile enough to play either DT or DE, a la Darrion Scott.

What surprises me, following on the heels of a couple other posters, is SirJo's status as back-up at CB. I think he's going to make one hell of a player, but didn't he have some significant coverage issues against top-flight high school talent a couple years ago?

My going-out-on-a-limb pick is Malcolm Jenkins to be the next good surprise at CB.

And two years later the 2 star DBs from the '03 recruiting class will be the starting CBs for the 2005 Buckeyes.

Other points of interest:

- Schnittker listed as the starter over Dionte Johnson, who appeared to win the job in the middle of last season

- Nick Patterson in the 2 Deep at Safety. I hadn't heard much from him in awhile, glad to see he may be stepping up.

- Is Sirjo Welch really good enough to be in the 2 deep, ahead of guys like Brandon Underwood and Michael Roberts? Will JamO and Jenkins push him back further? I really like Welch better as a safety.

- Does this depth chart signify that Huston is cleared to practice in the Spring, and further has he already been granted his 6th year?

The only thing you can take away from this depth chart: For the most part, upperclassmen get a head start going into spring practice. I fully expect things to look more "normal" at the end of spring/beginning of fall, and I hope the things we see that are unexpected are the result of pleasant surprises and not disappointments.

1. Donte Whitner
I really think that Whitner will start out at corner as he has the best ability at the position for now... I really think the staff has to wonder if JamO can break into at least the #3 spot once he gets used to tOSU ball. I am really gonna miss Donte at safety, however Everett sure can lay the wood too.

Anyone else notice that only Joey Galloway and Andy Katzenmoyer are on all three boards? I would think Mike D'Andrea would be close for all three but like earlier statements say he's nowhere to be seen....yet.

2. Brandon Underwood
Some people have been lumping Brandon's lack of practicing together with his brother's reason for missing practice, which was for violating team rules. It seems at least on the surface as tho Brandon's inactivity is a little different.
From OSU's Athletic Site:
In addition to D'Andrea and Everett, John Kerr, Brandon Underwood and Kudla will be limited to light duty in the spring because of medical restrictions. All are expected back in the fall when Ohio State opens its 115th season of football by hosting Miami of Ohio on Sept. 3.
Something else that is interesting to point out is that a lot of "experts" are saying that Pittman being out of shape is being blown out of proportion. He may have showed up slightly soft during winter workouts, but most expect him to make up for that in spring ball. He was a 5 YPC back last year, and most of that success came before the OL got their act together.

3. Curt Lukens
In other news, manuerva (sp?) just highlighted the fact that Lukens moved to safety... so I thought I'd include this Yahoo article:
...
"Yes, he's a safety now," said Lukens. "Curt had trouble getting his weight over the 225 pound mark, and the coaches wanted him to play at around 240 pounds. His ideal weight is 215 pounds, which is perfect for safety."

</td> </tr> </tbody> </table> When asked who initiated the switch, Lukens indicated it was a mutual decision. "They asked him to move to safety and he was thrilled to do so. He's always wanted to play there and feels it's his best position. Plus it's to his advantage knowing both the linebacker and safety positions," Lukens said.

Curt Lukens missed the past season after injuring his shoulder and undergoing surgery. "His shoulder is fine now," said the elder Lukens. "Down the road we might look into asking for a sixth year, much the way Josh Huston is doing now. Curt should be 100% by the time spring practice starts. His spirits are fine and he loves everything about Ohio State. He's really enjoying being part of the team and is looking forward to getting back on the field next season."
4. Anderson Russell
I think a ton of people are overlooking this kid. Who knows if he'll be ready to be a star from day one, but he at least deepens our roster of RBs at tOSU. He seems to be a lot faster than many people thought.
Russell darkhorse favorite for state title in 100m
—...
On reaching some success in track so soon: "I'm not surprised and I don't think my coaches are surprised. Everyone knew I could run after seeing me run with the football."
...
On how he is progressing in the 100: "Well, I had my fastest time of the season last Friday in one of the qualifying heats, finishing with a 10.6. That was only our second meet of the season, though. I hope to get much faster. I'd like to get down to a 10.4 or faster, if it is possible."...

He knows he has a dogfight for the starting TB position coming up, but shows up "a little soft?"

They can polish it however they want, but the kid did not show up ready to compete.

Agreed, I was just passing along a viewpoint. I think it speaks to a deeper issue for him to shwo up like that, but it was slightly encouraging to hear that I guess. Spring break time for me! :)
