2005 Winter Conditioning (official thread)

Need to be careful in reading anything into this chart as it does little but make the necessary adjustments to fill in behind seniors. It does not - and should not - reflect anything that the coaches might be anticipating will happen this spring based on performance on the field. On the OL in particular I would be amazed if one or more of the three RS aren't in the two deep.

It does give an insight as to moves the coaches are considering (i.e. Whitner). Beyond that I have also seen JT use the depth chart as a motivational tool in the past.

So long as Smith is suspended for the Opener I don't see how he could be listed as the starter. A more interesting question might be why Boeckman isn't #2 on any kind of 'official' chart.

I'm surprised you guys aren't talking more about the fact that Smith is behind Zwick. Maybe that was expected, but I didn't think I was in the minority that I think Smith should start.
it's already been mentioned that the pre-spring depth chart is very political, (i.e., upper-classmen being listed ahead of younger guys by default, etc.)..........with Smith being suspended, and the talk about being at the bottom of the totem pole, and Zwick playing/winning the Alamo Bowl, i think it would be expected for him to be listed #2 currently

I'm in the minority - I really like the idea of Sirjo @ CB. I will be anxious to see him in the Spring game. Also looking forward to seeing C Terry in action - I'll take the guys with great football instincts every time.

As far as Ginn and Holmes returning KOs, I don't think our opponents will have to worry about kicking off to us too much - they have to score first. Punt returns, on the othere hand....

J.O. and A. Boone will be in the 2-deep by the start of BigTen play if not sooner (and maybe M Wells as well)

OFFENSE

Guys not mentioned by OSU:

Frost
Arden
Roberts
Lukens
Turano
Thoma
Skeete
Pettrey
Cordle - Thought he was enrolling early.

Frost is on the list.

1. Why would they leave Lukens off of the safeties list? He's not in trouble, is he?
2. I'm surprised to see redshirt thoughts listed already. Is that our speculation, or has the coaching staff announced their thoughts on this?
3. I'm also surprised to see Smith #2, as opposed to #3. That makes me think regaining the starting role will be easier than I originally thought.
4. Pittman #1 also shocked me. Not that I don't think he deserves it, it's just that everyone's so impressed with the work Haw has been putting in.

It's still early though. I think the draft order for the spring game is more telling of a player's place on the team. That will be interesting. Especially the Pittman/Haw draft order.

I think people are confusing the list that I posted vs. the list that OSU released. If you look at the original post on this thread, you'll see the official OSU release. The list that has everyone, including incoming freshman, is somewhat speculation posted at www.BrutusReport.com.

"Ive admitted several times he had a great game against michigan. My point is his happy feet killed alot of drives in the 3 games prior and I never yelled at the TV screen when we played michigan."

Our defense bailed us out of that penn state game and pittman had a great game against indiana as well as ginn. Ginn owned michigan state as well and I will give credit to Smith for looking off the safety and hitting Ginn on the slant in the MSU game. Other then that I was EXTREMELY fustrated with him in the first three games he started.
>>>WHAT????

How many pass plays were even called in the Indiana, MSU, PSU, games? It seemed play calling had alot to do with Smith's passing. Tressel was VERY VERY VERY conservative with Smith in regards to passing. I vividly remember posts saying LET SMITH THROW THE BALL. We saw play calling open up in the Purdue and Michigan games. PSU game Tressel shut down the offense as soon as OSU jumped into a lead.

Happy feet is a label on many mobile QBs. It was definitely a knock on Stan Jackson, where it was justified but on Smith? NO WAY.

If Smith is allowed to do what he is capable of....he's probably more like McNabb or McNair and less like VY or VICK.

JT went conservative in a lot of those games cuz Gonzo was not yet a factor... and Ginn honestly did not take off as a receiver until MSU.

I think these numbers are pretty clear for who was the better QB last year... and these numbers don't include the number of great plays Smith made scrambling. True Zwick had less options, but as to claiming Smith was not a good passer requires blatantly ignoring reality.

I like Zwick as much as anyone else, but I've watched the Michigan game in the last 2 days at least 5 times (making a Michigan game highlight movie) pulling clips off the DVD.

Troy Smith is undoubtably a superior quarterback. I can't count the number of times where he instictively moved into - or out of the pocket avoiding a strong defensive rush and made an incredible play with his feet or by throwing the ball with incredible accuracy and touch while running. Maybe that game was an anomoly for him, but it's hard to ignore a qb who had the single greatest game in his position in OSU's history.

Zwick deserves a lot of credit for his Alamo Bowl performance, I believe he is capable of successfully leading this team. However, Troy just adds a dimension and playmaking ability Zwick doesn't have.

I usually don't worry about these QB debate threads but I just thought it should be pointed out that in the PSU game the reason smith didnt throw alot was b/c the wind was blowing like fucking mad.
