This is frustrating to watch as a Cavs fan. Technically, they were close to winning a championship this season. They have a lot of holes to fill though and pretty much everybody (except the Celtics & Pacers) are getting better around them while the Cavs are idle without a draft pick.

Honestly, not having that first isn't that big of a deal. Outside of the first ten-15 picks, everything is pretty much a crapshoot. If you look at the 20-30 range of picks(where Cleveland would've been picking), the rate of success for chosen players is very low. For every Boobie Gibson we pick, we're also going to pick a Luke Jackson. For every Jason Kapono there's a Reece Gaines. It's just a crapshoot about which guys games translate to the NBA. Besides, Brown should be 100% healthy next year, so unless we we're getting a killer PG that late in the draft(almost impossible), no one we would've picked would have put us up a level. We'll get better with our young guys maturing, not by drafting late in the first round.

Would it be ideal to have a first rounder every year? Of course, but it's hardly damaging as long as you're smart with FA and contracts.

smart FA contracts like Hughes'? Ugh. Between all the money tied up with Hughes and Z the Cavs won't be getting much better very soon.

And therein lies the rub doesnt it?

The Cavaliers will take a step back next season unless they find a gem in Free Agency.
