smart FA contracts like Hughes'? Ugh. Between all the money tied up with Hughes and Z the Cavs won't be getting much better very soon.

Hughes was overpaid, but he's really the only horrible contract we have. Snow's is pretty bad, but nothing that would constrict us. Z is still a quality starting center, despite his glaring inadequacies.

I'll wait to see what Ferry does with Sasha and how we handle Varejao. If we keep both or trade Sasha for a PG, then this offseason will be a complete success, regardless of the draft.

Seriously, unless you're hoping for Morris Almond to be an impact rookie, what good was the draft going to do us next year?

Day One Recap:

My thoughts...

- Portland is building a hell of a team. Oden, Aldridge and Roy is one hell of a young nucleus to build around. They are gonna be real good soon. Frye was a good addition to the frontcourt as well. Fernandez is a wildcard who could end up being a steal. I'm assuming they will just dump Francis...they can't want his attitude around all those young players.
- Atlanta did a helluva job. Horford is going to be a stud, and Law may just turn out to be the best PG in this draft.
- Seattle got a lot better. Durant will be a star and if they can keep Lewis, that's a damn good tandem. Adding Green also helps for the future.
- Danny Ainge is a moron. I'd go as far as to say he's the Matt Millen of the NBA. I could understand trading for Allen if you were a team that was close to competing for championships, but they're not. They basically traded away a pick they should have used to look to the future and a promising young PG for a 33 year old injury-prone SG with a lot of mileage.
- I don't like the Wright for Richardson trade either. For once I actually agree with Screamin' A. Smith. Why acquire a player owed $48M over the next four years when they too should be building for the future. Richardson is a good player, but he's not a franchise player. They better hope they can convince Wallace to come back.
- I like the Noah pick for the Bulls. I can't stand him as a person (he's a clown), but I too can see him becoming a Marcus Camby/Dennis Rodman type of player. Big Ben doesn't have a lot of years left, and Noah will step right into that role.
- I'm really interested to see what Conley will do in Memphis. I've been of the opinion that he made the right buisness decision by going out (obviously), but he really could have used another year or two to develop a jump shot. He does sem like a good fit for their sytem though.
- Smart pick by Detroit in getting Stuckey. He's a perfect fit for their system.
- The Randolph trade is interesting too. Great for the Knicks to dump Francis, but they bring in a guy with well documented character issues into the Big Apple. If he can fly straight, that was a good move for them.

Finally...two of the top four picks and three in the first round? That's gotta help Thad with recruiting...well, not that he really needs any help.

I agree mostly with what you said. I do disagree with a few points.

I'm not a huge fan of Atlanta's draft. I do like Horford, but I think Law is overrated as a PG. I loved him in college, but in the NBA he's a shooting PG with average athleticism and height. I think at the very best, he's Jason Terry, but I don't think he gets there. As a PG, I think he'll be a bust. I do see him catching on some team later in his career like Terry has though.

I also disagree with the Noah pick. I thought that was a horrible pick for Chicago. They need low post scoring, not energy and defense. They already have a similar player(who's much better with better upside in Tyrus Thomas). I love the pick as a Cavs fan, because it means whenever we play them, we won't have to worry about their frontcourt scoring all that much against us. The Bulls should've taken Hawes. Is he athletic as Noah? No, but he's worlds better when it comes to scoring, and that's what the Bulls needed.

Danny Ainge should be fired and never allowed near an NBA franchise again. What a horrible, horrible trade for Boston. They're not going to contend any time soon with Ray Allen(he's an aging jump shooter, how often do those players stay good after they're 32?), so why kill your franchise? Why not take Yi as a bookend with Jefferson, trade Pierce for whatever you can get(Ideally picks and cap room), and really rebuild. Ray Allen isn't going to vault the Celtics into contention for anything other than a 7/8 seed in the playoffs.

I don't know which thread or even which forum that this should be in, but I have a question for yous guys:

Which is more impressive - the fact that Ohio State got 2 guys drafted in the top 5 (#1 and #4) or the fact that Florida got 3 guys drafted in the top 10? I know it's never happened before that a team got 3 drafted in the top 10, but I would think that 2 in the top 5 is pretty rare, too.

Three in the top 9 is more rare. Only happened once before. If Conley had gone three like he should've, then it maybe would've been a toss up.

same here. :! Can't believe I'm going against OSU with 3 first rounders in the same year.
I thought, I was lucky with J .Jackson and I being at OSU the same time. Freshmen this past year got those 3 1ST ROUNDERS and chris wells, who will become the best RB ever in OSU HISTORY. DAMMIT, I want to live in the dorms again:biggrin:

Was Lucus and Havlichek (sp) drafted in the same year or 1st rounders together?

Yes - Jerry Lucas was a territorial draft pick for Cincinnati (#6 first round) in 1962.

John Havlicek was taken as #9 by Boston that same year (back then, that was the last pick of the first round).

ESPN Page 2 - The Sports Guy: Draft Diary XI

Bill Simmons' draft diary...I don't think I've ever been so excited to read something in my life after what Ainge did last night.

Very funny article. This was one of the best lines:

Milwaukee just took Yi Jianlian at No. 6 even though they weren't on his list of acceptable cities because of its lack of a Chinese population ... or for that matter, any population other than good-natured, heavyset Caucasians who enjoy dark beer and fried food.

other good lines:

6:42: Bilas on Stephen A. Smith: "He needs to become more coachable and learn how to play with other people." Whoops, he said that about Daequan Cook. Sorry about that.

4:51: Al Horford speaks English, Spanish and Portugese, but unfortunately, he doesn't speak Stu Scott. Have I used that joke before? Ah, screw it

Great Seinfeld reference:

Meanwhile, Oden gets a full-fledged, "Thank God he seems like a good guy" smile from Stern during their handshake. If there was a bizarro version of the moment when he shook hands with J.R. Rider in 1995, that would have been it.
