2007 Preseason and Regular season Polls

Who is to say that any of them did?

No one. It was just a question.

In my opinion, there are several reasons to think that coaches in the Big Ten would be more likely to anoint us #1, as compared to coaches from outside conferences. A few that come to mind are: human bias in the form of pride or a sense of superiority of one's own conference, seeing the team in person, economic justification (BCS title game payout for everyone in the conference), in addition to things Coach Tressel said when voting Michigan 2nd at the end of the season last year, and things some of the SEC coaches said when voting Florida the same. Anonymity protects any bias that might exist.

Coach Zook, for instance, might be more likely to vote Mizzou #1, since they lost to them, and beat us. If the vote wasn't anonymous, that would be more of a sure thing.

What??? Where do I begin............

I don't know. Where do you begin? Is it really that far fetched to think that a coach in a power conference would vote its conference champion, who also has the best overall record statistically (excluding Hawaii), #1?

That's a gigantic gap between tOSU and Georgia, who's also finished playing. There's no way tOSU will get jumped from behind in the BCS.

On the other hand, I also think it's EXTREMELY unlikely that tOSU could jump either Mizzou or West Virginia if they both win.

So it's quite simple. If one of them loses, tOSU goes to the title game. If not, it's the Rose Bowl, where USC is the opponent if they beat UCLA.

BOOMER SOONER!!!

A moment of special mention for that AP voter with, I assume, the largest intake of hallucinogenic mushrooms this side of the Caterpillar, Jon Wilner.

Which idiot (not savant) still has Ohio State ranked - 11th in his poll, in the 14th week.

Yes, I know, the AP Poll doesn't count toward the BCS - but it is the sole component of an independently awarded mythical National Championship. In that regard some quality assurance is mandatory. Having variance among the voters is one thing, it is in fact entirely expected. Having extreme outlier opinions blessed by the AP is quite another.

Here is the current addition of Wilner's idiotic ranking:
14
1 Missouri
2 Georgia
3 West Virginia
4 Virginia Tech
5 Southern Cal
6 Oklahoma
7 LSU
8 Florida
9 Boston College
10 Tennessee
11 Ohio St.
12 Cincinnati
13 Clemson
14 Arizona St.
15 Auburn
16 Illinois
17 Kansas
18 Oregon
19 Texas Tech
20 Hawaii
21 South Florida
22 Arkansas
23 Virginia
24 Texas
25 BYU

College football
Using wallet votes to settle No. 1 debate makes sense

By Tim Dahlberg

Associated Press

The Bowl Championship Series computer says Missouri is the best college football team in the country. So, too, do a group of pollsters who are charged with the weekly task of rating teams.
Down on the Las Vegas Strip, though, the Tigers aren't even rated the best team in their next game, against No. 9 Oklahoma.
For decades, people who follow college football have tried to figure out surefire ways to crown legitimate national champions, with varying degrees of success. In recent years the BCS has taken over with a system that forgoes a playoff in favor of computers and polls.

In any normal week, teams that win (or don't lose) just slide up. I don't think that will happen with the polls this week. Given yesterday's games, I think any intelligent pollster (if there is such a thing) will sit down and treat it like a preseason poll and vote where they believe each team should be. After Ohio State, I think you have to throw the records out the window. Almost always the AP, Harris, and Coach's polls are pretty much in agreement. You might have a couple of teams flip-flopped, but that's about it. This may be one of those times where the #2 in the Coach's is the #4 in the Harris and the AP is doing something completely different. The only thing not in doubt is that someone is going to be bitching later today.
