Having spoke with a Scout insider who talks frequently with UM insiders, I can tell you that the UM insiders are more than slightly concerned about things right now.

Wad, we're concerned but it's not that bad.

Darryl Stonum (#1 WR in Texas, Top100 player) is going to go public this Sunday to UM and Sam McGuffie is going to be in-town visiting and might pull the trigger for UM as well. UM also just got a verbal from one of the five kids they offered at camp, in-state OL Rocko Khoury. Khoury isn't a world-beater, but he's got good size and athletic ability, the kid did run a 4.16 shuttle at 6'6, 282 pounds at a recent NIKE combine this spring. I think down the road the kid could make a great center, especially in the zone scheme where you usually see more nimble lineman at center.

UM insiders knew that UM was slipping for Blanton for awhile, and many insiniuated that UM had moved on and were focusing their attention on his teammate Spencer Adams.
Hunter visited UM the same day that Mike Martin committed and they play the same position. I think his committment to ND was more or less him thinking "OK, Michigan is stacked at tackle, I go there I might not play, I go to Notre Dame I start from day one".

UM hasn't lost Koger yet and they were in touch with him as of yesterday. They've far from fallen off the map for him. Could he end up at OSU? Yeah, obviously considering they are the only other school he is considering and he hasn't made his mind up yet. I want Koger, but at the same time he wants to play TE and I can see him not being too thrilled with UM considering UM got two TE's in '07 and Brandon Moore in '08.

Jonas Gray literally just got a UM offer and that kid has changed his favorites as much or more than any other kid I've seen since I've been following recruiting. First it was Notre Dame, then he almost committed to Florida, then it was Minnesota, then it was Michigan and he was dying for an offer, then he's completey open with no favorites, and now it's MSU and Nebraska? Outside of Michigan (who supposedly offered him as an ATH only after they saw him rip off a 4.37-40) and Florida (who has offered literally EVERYBODY) does this kid even have an impressive offer that you'd expect from a Top 50 player (which he's not) like Rivals has him ranked. There was talk that he was offered as an ATH, not a RB, and quite frankly I'd like to see him at UM because he's an in-stater with sub 4.4-40 speed, but as long as we land McGuffie I could honestly careless. It's not like UM has really been after this kid, they haven't even been recruiting him up until a few days ago.

MSU pulling even with Michigan for Fred Smith just might have something to do with Darryl Stonum committing to Michigan, Fred's best friend already committed to MSU, and Michigan taking three receivers in the 2007 class. Smith wants to play early, he's made that known and odds are he has a better shot doing that at MSU. Still, UM has Mom in there corner and Fred has been a priority for them and they've showed him alot of love. This one ain't over, and the fact that he didn't commit after such a great visit means that said visit will have time to wear off and UM will still work him.

UM is still in very good position for Christian Wilson. I've never heard of nor seen a kid just visit and hang-out with the team for the entire week of camp but not participate at all. They usually just stay for a day or a session and leave, but Wilson was there the entire time and hamming it up with the team and '08 commits. Michigan is very much in it for Wilson, he's just not ready to end it IMO. Things could very well take a turn, but right now I'm not that worried.

The entire "Baldwin meltdown" came about on the Scout Michigan board, where frequent contributor and WPA "insider" Gene Hankerson aka Gene23 stated that ND was in Baldwin's Top 2 with UM, not that Baldwin liked UM any less or that he was now a ND lock. I don't get why UM fans went into total meltdown. Did people honestly think this kids Top 2 was going to stay Michigan-Pitt? Did people honestly think he would wind up at Pitt? Pitt almost never lands WPIAL kids like Baldwin. Michigan is still in the Top 2 for him, and UM has the most fickle fan base in the country. They don't think we are going to land anybody and the only way they feel confident that UM even has a shot is if the kid says he grew up dying to play for UM or comes right out and says UM is my favorite.

I wish they were more like Buckeye fans and just assume that every kid was coming, because it gets very annoying to read end of the world rants and we can't recruit for crap suicide watch threads.

One, actually![/b]

But, what do we know? After all, they are all coming here.

I will admit, you guys have a sick class. #1 in the nation thus far IMO, but then again most teams with the exception of Texas aren't even close to finished yet. Considering the lack of scholarships it's an unbelievable class that is boosted by just a loaded year in-state.

You guys may very well wind up with a higher ranked class when all is said and done, but we've had the higher ranked classes than you guys in the past and you've still managed to spank us. Recruiting is very fun to look at and all, but even harder to predict and you can't take it too seriously.

Some of those lower ranked 3*'s that you guys had like Nick Mangold, Troy Smith, Santonio Holmes, and AJ Hawk wound up being superstars and the "can't miss" 5*'s like Mike D'Andrea and Justin Zwick were major busts.

All those 3*'s you mentioned were 4*'s on one of the two services, except AJ Hawk.

I see your point though.

Never said anything about UM not being in a good position with Koger, Wilson, etc. Just mentioned that maybe they weren't the UM locks they were once perceived to be. I am surprised to see you lower yourself to taking thinly veiled shots at OSU fans when you have been a strong contriubtor (on what you know to be an OSU board) for quite some time. I was merely trying to pass along info from people who would know about the current state of UM recruiting.

You've made your case...

EDIT: For the sake of not giving away too much from UM insiders I edited my original post to take out any specifics.

"Off" year "on" year OSU is OSU and TSUN is TSUN. It all balances. I recall last year we "lost'' a few we felt we'd land. One thing's sure, talent is talent and both teams will get it.

During the Cooper years, we came apart like a cheap watch in many instances. Now it's Lloyd that seems to have taken over that role.

The coaches set the tone because there is a VERY fine line in talent. It's confidence without cockiness that determines the big time.

True that, and Lloyd has actually been taking a hands off approach in regards to recruiting the past couple of years. Lloyd used to get out all over the country early and be way more aggressive, seems like he's leaving those duties to Loeffler and English.

Sounds like he's fed up with recruiting and dealing with recruiting and everything that it entails- traveling across the country, having to pimp yourself/program, dealing with negative recruiting, misinformation, lies, and having to deal with 16,17 year old kids whose minds change like the wind.

Heck he wasn't really that hands on with spring or the summer football camp. DeBord has been running the spring practices the past two springs and Szabo and English were the most hands on coaches at UM's summer camp.

Carr is getting older and he has even less patience and stamina for coaching than in the past, which means he's not going to be around for much longer. I really think he's leaving after 2008.

Interesting opinion. You think he'll wait around for the '08 season? I guess I see him stepping down ater this year, or waiting for Mallett and the new guys to mature.

2007 - ND & OSU with huge turnover on offense, both come to AA.
2008 - UM with huge turnover on offense, OSU returns basically everyone (before draft declarations), and UM has to travel to SB & CBus.

Re-reading my original post on this subject, I realize I made an error. What I meant to say was that I don't think he stays past 2008. I think there is a high likelyhood (better than 50%) that 2007 is his last season, but if he does stay past 2007 then 2008 will be his last year. Regardless I don't see him sticking around very long.

In a perfect world UM/Carr would take a page out of Barry Alvarez' playbook and name his young charismatic defensive co-ordinator as the next Head Coach and just be done with it, but I've got a sneaking suspicion that that is not going to happen. If Carr had his choice his best buddy Mike DeBord would takeover.
