2008 Bracketology Discussion

and Ole Miss is off the bubble with a loss to Georgia.

Buckeyes certainly have to win tomorrow, but every little thing helps...or at least doesn't hurt. Today was a good day for them in that aspect.

Still waiting on 'Zona/Stanford, but I'm not staying up for that. 37-37 Stanford, 2nd half just underway.

Great day for the Bucks on the bubble front. Arizona, UMass, UD, Ole Miss, Villanova, UAB, Arizona State, Baylor, Oregon, Maryland, Florida, and Houston all lost, making the bubble much smaller on Thursday night than it was on Thursday morning. For my part, I think this basically killed any chances for Villanova, UAB, ASU, Oregon, Maryland, Florida, and Houston.

Friday's game of note:

Ohio State vs. Michigan State: Win and we are in, lose and hello NIT. Nothing else matters.

Hoops & Scoops: an OSU basketball blog

The Day of the Bursting Bubbles

OK, I?m not really proud to say this, but I stayed up tonight to watch the Georgia-Mississippi game on channelsurfing.net. Games like this are why nothing is better than college basketball in March. You end up yelling at the screen about teams you?ve never seen and players you?ve never heard of.
For those of you with normal jobs, this is what happened: Ole Miss, a bubble team, rallied from 13 points down in the second half. Georgia, a sub-.500 team, had a 3-point lead in the final seconds. So what does Georgia do? Foul the three-point shooter, of course. Overtime. Again, Georgia has a 3-point lead in the final seconds of overtime. You can guess what happened. Yep, again, a foul of the three-point shooter with 5.5 seconds left. Ole Miss makes all three, only to have Georgia race upcourt and score at the buzzer to win it. And another bubble team falls.
For Ohio State, yesterday couldn?t have gone much better.

As it stands, the Big East is receiving 7 bids to the tournament, politics aside. Villanova losing might benefit Ohio State, but only if the Buckeyes beat at least MSU, and maybe Wisconsin. Nova is 3-6 against the RPI top 50 v. OSU who is 2-9. 8-9 road/neutral record v. 5-9 for the Buckeyes. 1 less overall loss than OSU in a little big tougher conference (projected after conference tourney results). I think they have a slight edge at least over OSU today, once again politics aside.

You keep saying "politics aside" as if you are approaching this from a neutral standpoint and as if you do not have an agenda. Yet you conveniently ignore any facts that weigh in OSU's favor relative to Villanova, such as the following:

RPI: Advantage OSU (47 to 50 even before Nova's blowout loss yesterday)
SOS: Advantage OSU (21 to 52)
Record vs. RPI 51-100 teams: Advantage OSU (5-1) to Nova's meager 4-3.
Non-conference SOS: Huge advantage OSU (13 to 158).

Look, I am not saying there aren't some facts that weigh in Villanova's favor, but to ignore the above and conclude that Villanova deserves a spot over OSU in the manner you have certainly is not "politics aside." Your agenda is clear.

College basketball roundup: Opening-round loss hurts Baylor's NCAA prospects

Friday, March 14, 2008 3:07 AM

Richard Roby scored eight of his 32 points in the second overtime and Colorado put a dent in Baylor's NCAA Tournament hopes with a surprising 91-84 win yesterday in the first round of the Big 12 tournament.

Colorado (12-19) jumped out to a big early lead, withstood a furious Baylor rally in the second half, then made just enough shots in both overtimes to become the first 12 seed to beat a 5 seed in the 12-year history of the Big 12 tournament.

Sorry guys, but for Dayton's sake, I'm rooting for MSU today...

Flyers are so close... 21-10, RPI of 34 (likely to go up), SOS 30, 7-5 vs. top-100, 3-4 vs. top-50 (3 losses to Xavier)... Plus injury considerations for losing Chris Wright (14-1 when he went down)... If OSU and St. Joe's lose today, I think we're in... We may be if just St. Joe's loses...

Lunardi on Sportscenter this morning had OSU and St. Joe's as the last two in and said that they had to win today to get in...

He had UMass and UD as the last two out... So with the other two losing, logically we (UD) should move in...

I am a UD fan as well but I disgree. UD will get no "injury consideration" because the injured player has not returned. You only get that consideration if you lose a player then lose several games in a row, injured player returns, and you win several games with that player. Although UD has stated Wright will play next week (either NIT or NCAA), they can't take him into consideration because they have no idea what he will be able to produce.

If only UD could have won 2 out of the following 3 games they would be in: George Washington, LaSalle, Duquesne. Those were three terrible games. I still have nightmares about the GW game where UD was up by 5 with under two minutes, missed 4 foul shots and lost.

Lunardi is also a St. Joes homer. Dayton just beat them rather easily last Saturday, yet he has them in.

Does this mean that you like Dayton more than our Buckeyes were does this mean that you just want Michigan State to beat our Buckeyes so it might help Dayton get into the tournament. I think you should let Dayton handle its own business and you root for our Buckeyes.

I will also say that the Big East might be the strongest conference in the country but I also believe that they get a lot of love because of the East Coast media.

That is the approach I am taking. Dayton had a shot yesterday and couldn't get it done. Why root against OSU only to have Dayton not make the tourney anyway.

My position over the last week or so has been to root like hell for my teams (OSU, Dayton, Ohio) and see what happens. i could never root against any of those teams...unless they play eachother (I have a very complicated spreadsheet which considers many different factors in case any of these teams play eachother:biggrin:)

With Dayton and Ohio losing to their Arch Rivals, I don't know if I can handle an OSU loss today.

Things couldn't have broken better on the bubble for the Flyers. I think Dayton and OSU are both in at this point.

I think you will see UD officially announce Wright's clearance to play today or tomorrow... Those that have served on the committee before claim that a situation like this most definitely will get consideration, due to the fact that they consider the entire body of work for the season...

I think if Xavier knocks off St. Joe's, UD is better than 75% to get in...
