2008 tOSU QB discussion (official thread)

I think this is a GREAT point made by article Grad linked a couple of posts up. Everyone is down on the team for not being more fired up and ready to go when they faced adversity. I am sure many players react the same we did when we got behind 14-3 or 21-3, Dang, here we go again. We think that way because we know what we get with Todd and with the gameplan the coaches have, we have seen it for 2 years in several big games and there is nothing to get fired up about.

That is the biggest reason I support TP getting more snaps. At least it is fresh and the team can at least keep some hope alive because of that if adversity comes our away again. That coupled with the fact that defenses know how to beat the Buckeyes. Load the box, pressure the QB and make them sustain a drive by passing the ball. We can not do that vs competition that equal our talent.

I think Pryor will at least make teams bring a player or two out of the box for a while. That will do a lot of things. One, I bet our O-Line does not look nearly as bad as it has. It is hard to block 8 people with 5 or 6 people. Of course they will look bad when that happens when there is not a scheme to help counter that, and that leads to disaster.

Go Bucks!
well probably only face 1 or 2 good defenses the rest of the year, and maybe one great one. (pick and choose from psu, wisc, ill?)

I am sad that Todd isn't as good as we would like him to be. I do not like to see players get down graded.
As the rest of you are , I was devastated by the way the Bucks played but I also believe that JT will make the necessary adjustments.
It is my contention that both the offensive and defensive coordinators need to correct the problems they have asap.

OK. But I still consider the 67 - 69 Buckeyes one of the greatest teams ever and they didn't win but one NC, Same, same the 96 - 97 Rose Bowl, Cotton Bowl winning Buckeyes. And to say that the 01 - 03 Miami teams was not one of the greatest would be lessen the deeds of the 03 Champions.

Agree with you on the Miami 01-03 teams, 67-69 Buckeye teams are before my time. But the 96-97 Buckeyes may have been really good but lost to TSUN in 96 before winning in the Rose Bowl and lost to Florida St in the Sugar Bowl in 97, and finished second in the Big Ten - how can they be considered as one of the greatest teams ever?

If we are basing it on talent alone outside of record then I would say our 05 team was loaded more so than 96-97 - only losses were to Texas (eventual champ) and Penn State (#3). If we start Troy we probably beat Texas.

Nebraska in 95 was an amazing team, tough to compare USC to them after only two games but the from the looks of things now they look in good shape to run the table and end up in Miami.

To everyone who I went round and round with about Boeckman being a potential liability for the team's success, you were right. I am officially eating crow. I was hoping that TB's poor performances late last season were anomalies, but, as was evidenced in the USC game, that does not seem to be the case. I'm not going to say that all of the offensive woes are attributed to him, but I do not think that he represents our best chance for success at the QB position.

I don't think JT should hand over the starting job to Pryor, at least not right now. Pryor's throwing mechanics are still a long way from where they need to be. His arm was good enough at the HS level, but if he tries to throw downfield without setting his feet against Ds like UW's or PSU's, it will come back to bite him. We still need a QB who is a legit threat for long passes for TP to share time with, whether it's TB or Bauserman. I would hope that the coaches give JB a real chance for meaningful playing time before we hit the meat of the conference sched. At this point, I think that a combination of TP and JB may be the best option, but we need to see a lot more of JB. His arm and quick release make him a better prospect than TB with the supporting cast we've seen so far.

Here's what I'd like to see: Against Troy, start the game with the same plan as USC, start TB, put TP in early and often, but for more complete drives. If it seems like we can handle Troy rather easily, give Bauserman a good hard look on alternating drives. Against Minny, there should be more opportunity for experimentation. Based on the performances against Troy, start TP or JB, and alternate between the two accordingly. Hopefully, one or both will distinguish themselves enough to ease the concerns of Buckeye fans.

Boeckman still the man for defeated Buckeyes

By Dave Woolford

The headline read: ?Boeckman or Pryor? Shouldn't be a tough call??

The Columbus newspaper sports columnist went on to make a strong case for freshman Terrelle Pryor replacing senior Todd Boeckman at quarterback, if Ohio State is to close the gap between itself and the finest college football teams in the country.

It followed almost directly on the heels of the Buckeyes' 35-3 drubbing by Southern Cal in a national championship appetizer Sept. 13 in L.A Coliseum, a tussle that left USC licking its chops and the Buckeyes licking their mortal national championship wounds.

Sometimes quick judgments made at the scene of the crime with the corpse still warm can be categorized as obsessive-compulsive behavior or excessive frustration or aggressive partiality made by a bunch of manic depressives.

Given a little time, conventional wisdom will often step forward, soothe the situation and cooler noggins will prevail.

This is not one of those times.

Well, it apppears the future got here a year ahead of schedule. We have ourselves a QB. TP looked very good out there running and throwing. Sure, he made some frosh mistakes, but for the most part, played much better than I could ever have expected. He went through his progressions, even dumping off to his secondary recievers a couple times. Most impressively, he kept his eyes downfield even when on the move. That is something you don't often see in a young QB...especially a true frosh with the gifts that TP has. Sure he's gonna make some mistakes down the road, but this kid plays a lot more mature than I expected.

Tough ending to the TB era. I genuinely like the kid. Kind of a sad ending to what could have been a great story. The real question is, how much more will Todd see the field. I know JT has said he still was wanting to rotate them somewhat, but after Terrelle's showing today, that may or may not be in the cards. Maybe he will against some of the stronger Big-10 opponents, but right now TP got his chance and ran with it.
