he's got to make extra room for slots somewhere.

I mean besides at LB and DL.

'08 class;
LB:
Kenny Demens
JB Fitzgerald
DL:
Mike Martin

'09 class;
LB:
Isiah Bell
Brandin Hawthorne
Mike Jones
Cameron Gordon (???)
DL:
Anthony LaLota
Craig Roh
William Campbell

'10 class;
LB:
Marvin Robinson
DL:
Ken Wilkins
Antonio Kinard
Jordan Paskorz

When I actually break it down and look at it, I don't think Rich is doing that bad. I mean it's still very early in this thing, and our DT depth chart has got to be very appealing to recruits.

I think we need only 1-2 more LB recruits (preferably 1 OLB and 1 ILB) in this class and we need 2-3 DT recruits, and it's still very early in the recruiting process.

The LB position needs an upgrade in numbers and talent. He needs more than converted safeties or athletes.

Robinson will be a spinner (Brown's position). The spinner (S/LB hybrid) position is manned by Stevie Brown, Hawthorne (195 lbs this spring) & Mike Jones. Marvin Robinson will likely replace Stevie next year. There's some talent here, but they aren't LBs.

That leaves his LB signees as Fitzgerald (good player), Bell (outgrowing safety), Brandon Smith (not fast enough for safety). We really have no idea how well the latter two will handle LB. Meanwhile the slot position could be 8-11 deep next spring, and they only use 1 at a time (compared to 2-3 for LB).

Hawthorne is a likely redshirt, he'll add weight and be right in the thick of things to replace Brown in '10. Spinner is a perfect position for Hawthorne BTW, it's basically the same position he has played all throughout high school. I've seen that kid play against some of the best HS talent in the nation about 5-6 times, and I think he is going to be a great player for Michigan. He's an athlete that flies around the field and makes plays, and he plays with a reckless abandonment. He'll bring some much needed speed to that defense.

Mike Jones is Brown's likely back-up this year and he'll also be in the thick of things along with Hawhtorne and Robinson to be the starter at the spinner in '10. Oh, and by the way, they aren't suppose to be LB'ers, they are supposed to be S/LB hybrids, and each one of those guys fits said role almost perfectly, especially Marvin Robinson, who looks like the prototype for that position.

Kenny Demens (a guy Rich signed) is Obi Ezeh's back-up, JB Fitzgerald is Jonas Mouton's back-up, and then there are a trio of athletes that Rich signed in Brandon Smith, Isiah Bell, and Cameron Gordon that will fight their way up the depth chart. My guess is Bell and Gordon both redshirt, and that a REDSHIRT FRESHMAN Brandon Smith gets his feet wet on special teams.

By the way, I believe that Smith had the speed to play safety in Michigan's old scheme under Carr. I think what they are doing right now is trying to get that defensive backfield faster, particularly the safety positions. What sealed the deal for Smith to move to LB was the play of Troy Woolfolk, (whom the coaches moved from CB to S in the spring) and true freshman Vlad Emilien.

I also do not think that Rich will have 8-11 slot receivers on scholarship. My guess would be that some of these guys stay at RB (like for example Teric Jones) and some of them move to CB or S.

Why bother? He just signed a PK in the last class. Unless he's convinced that guy won't pan out, it seems as though he'd do better by getting a quality dedicated punter.

What does a PK do at Michigan? Kick off to begin the game or the second half, and then what? Why waste a scholarship for a guy who will be in the game for 1 play?

I strongly disagree...

The kicks following a Michigan safety could really add up.
safety? the people getting tackled for a safety are going to be either 160 lb Tater Tot or one of their slot dots that got moved to RB. if they're getting hit in the back field for a safety, I think it's safe to say they're going to fumble from the concussion.

I guess another offensive player could fall on it though.

edit: Not an offensive lineman though. They're already blocking down field for the screen pass.

The search to replace Zoltan is on...

Scout Free

MI punter Mike Sadler holds Bama, LSU offers. Did well at UM camp, hoping for an offer.

Scout $

Palmetto Florida's Brandon Tarpley also did well, no listed offers yet.

Sadler is listed at 6'1", 185 lbs. How many kickers are in the upper half (size-wise) of their school's recruiting class?

I mean, other than Garrett Rivas, of course. :p

I've got to hand it to RR. His plan is quite brilliant. When he got to AA, he realized he was in for a bumpy ride. When Pryor went elsewhere and he didn't have a single useful QB on roster, it became clear he would not have his offense - and thus team - up to speed for at least a few years. But with his foresight and innovation, he used failures to his advantage.

So what did he do? Start Sheridan, hijack the defensive scheme vs Purdue, play McGuffie a ton, etc. Anything he could to tank the season. Where's the brilliance in that, you ask? Now the majority of UM fans are expecting a 6-7 win season in year two, but it will be progress in their eyes. Without the 3-3-5 and Toledo debacles, UM may have finished with 5 or 6 wins, and a 6/7 win season the year afterwards would seem like treading water.

Now he has to barely break .500 - against a very bad schedule - and he'll have the program headed in the right direction. Genius.

And therein lies the problem. You could recruit top notch, 4* or 5* CB's or safeties in your recruiting class. Or, you could recruit WR's with offers from Toledo and then convert them to defense.

Plus, he's recruiting only for "his system", so there's no way they can fire him. If they do, they're going to go through another few years of switching systems, which will be another disaster. So they just have to keep him on board and keep on saying "come on guys, once his system is in place and he has his recruits, it'll be great!!"

Total job security for at least a few years

No, he didn't... unless you meant the likes of Ernest "shoulda been a LB" Shazor. His coverage was suspect before UM, after a year in the program, and forced the move to LB.

I forgot about Demens, but I'm just not a very big fan of having to move athletes to LB. Would Cameron Gordon have been offered if he was from Arizona? I have my doubts.

No prayer of a position switch:

  1. Roundtree
  2. Odoms
  3. TRobinson
  4. Gallon
  5. Drake

    Unlikely:
  6. Feagin
  7. Dileo (is he truly 5'10?)

Could play RB/WR, but there are a lot of bodies there already:
  8. Stokes
  9. Jones

Could end up as a slot:
  10. Denard Robinson

I keep hearing the 'stay at RB' line, but UM has a bunch of those already. * - guys who could line up at slot
09: Minor, Brown, Grady
09+ Shaw, Smith, Touissaint*, Cox, Hopkins.

They aren't done with offensive recruiting either. Austin White is a priority target, and he could be a slot as well. Dior Mathis was an early offer. If he still has a spot available, he might be a slot.

...also Bowling Green, Eastern Michigan and Toledo. Does nothing to change the perception that he's speding his most of his time chasing, or at least bringing in, second tier recruits. :so:

well

Toledo did beat Michigan last year, so maybe he thinks by out recruiting Toledo he is accomplishing some sort of moral victory

I guess you must not have noticed Rich still actively recruiting Cullen Christian, Dior Mathis, Tony Grimes, and Rashad Knight.

Christian, Grimes, and Knight have all come out publicly within the last week or so and declared Michigan as their outright leaders, and there is some pretty strong indication that Dior Mathis is a big Michigan lean as well.

Who are said WR's with offers from Toledo that we are trying to convert to defense?
