2010-2011 Men's Basketball (Outright Big Ten & BTT Champs)

2010 Season Preview: Plenty of Questions at Point
By Brandon Castel

COLUMBUS ? For the second straight year, the Buckeyes will open the basketball season with serious questions about the point guard position.

A year ago it was whether or not Evan Turner, a 6-foot-7 small forward, could make the transition to handling the ball and running the offense on every possession.

Ohio State coach Thad Matta would love to have that problem again this year if it meant having 21 back in the lineup. Unfortunately, he won?t have that option, but the Buckeyes could be asking the same questions when it comes to their point guard position in 2010.

Although they added a true point guard in freshman Aaron Craft, Matta will also likely use veterans David Lighty and William Buford in attempt to replace the National Player of the Year in Ohio State?s backcourt.

?Evan did so much, not only for myself but for Dave, Will and Dallas (Lauderdale),? senior Jon Diebler said.

?It was kind of awesome to have a guy like that, but I think this year, with how Dave and Will are playing at the guard spot, and even Aaron and the other freshmen, when they come into the game.?

given our weak non-conference schedule and our wonderfully deep team of scorers, we're going to see a lot of games over 100 points. i expect that ohio state will be in the top 10, if not the top 5, in points/game by the time conference play starts.

over/under on double-doubles for sully?

Observations: New Look is Good Look for Buckeyes
By Brandon Castel

COLUMBUS, Ohio ? Subtract Evan Turner from last season?s Sweet 16 team, and Ohio State was perhaps a .500 ball club.

Not only was he the best player in the country, but he did just about everything for the Buckeyes on their run to a regular season and tournament title in the Big Ten. Turner was so good running the point; he earned the Player of the Year award in college basketball and the No. 2 overall pick in the NBA Draft.

His departure left Buckeye fans wondering what their team would look like in 2010-11 without the 6-foot-7 All-American running the show.

The 12,234 fans who came out to Value City Arena Sunday afternoon for the lone exhibition game got an early glimpse of Thad Matta?s latest squad. What they saw had to be cause for excitement as the Buckeyes blasted Walsh 102-56.

Bob Hunter commentary: Freshmen impress, even in an exhibition
Monday, November 8, 2010
By Bob Hunter
The Columbus Dispatch

More than 12,000 fans showed up to watch Ohio State play an exhibition game with Walsh, and it's a good bet most of them didn't come to see whether upperclassmen David Lighty and William Buford could beat their men off the dribble.

The Cavaliers live in NAIA Division II, so that pretty much goes without saying. It's doubtful the fans opened their wallets hoping to see the No.4 Buckeyes hammer Walsh into submission.

Exhibition basketball games can be a bit of a surprise package, though. Four years ago, the Buckeyes lost to Division II Findlay, a fact that wasn't lost on the guy fans most likely did come to see, 6-foot-9 freshman Jared Sullinger.

"Actually, I was at that game," Sullinger said. "And I caught a little bit of havoc at school (Northland) because everybody was talking about your school lost to a D2 school. (Senior) Jon (Diebler) told us (about) that, and we looked at it, and it led us to what we had today. Everybody shared the ball. Everybody played well. We've still got little touchups on our defense, and we have to get it together."

My tickets for the opening game just arrived. My son and I will be at the basketball game on Friday night and the football game on Saturday. It's going to be a great father/son weekend.

:oh:

Enjoy Bill. I'll be there for both as well with my dad except he said he will pass on the basketball game. Saving his energy for the game on Saturday. :io:

Boy, I love Ken Pomeroy's predictions for OSU. Before a game has even been played, he has made predictions. Pomeroy has the odds in favor of OSU winning each individual game this season. I might be able to get used to a 31-0 season for the Bucks. Pomeroy predicts 26-5 record overall, though, due to cumulative probabilities:

He predicts OSU the #2 team in the country, behind Duke. http://kenpom.com/rate.php

Well, we've got a pretty favorable schedule preseason with every game except two basically at home. Its those road games though that I'm very interested in.

At Florida on Tuesday. At Florida State on Nov 30th. If we make it through those two, we'll be undefeated heading into conference play. That sound fantastic to me.

OSU men: Keys to the season
Thursday, November 11, 2010
By Bob Baptist
THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Key offensive players

I'm sure the coaches know, but I don't: Were there more post touches against Walsh than in all of last season? Unlike his post predecessors, Jared Sullinger has the hands, feet and skill to score near the basket. That, and his ability to pass out of double-teams, could translate into open looks for William Buford, Jon Diebler, David Lighty and Aaron Craft.

Ohio State men: New faces

The Columbus Dispatch

Aaron Craft
FRESHMAN GUARD

A good defender and decision-maker (valedictorian of his graduating class), Craft is a candidate to start or be a top reserve at point guard. He was Ohio Division III player of the year as a senior at Liberty-Benton High School in Findlay and Division V player of the year in football as a junior after quarterbacking his team to the state final. He played with fellow freshmen Jordan Sibert, Jared Sullinger and J.D. Weatherspoon on an All-Ohio Red team that won three consecutive AAU national age-group championships.

Evan Ravenel
JUNIOR FORWARD

Ravenel is ineligible to play in games this season after transferring from Boston College in June. He has two years of eligibility remaining beginning in 2011-12. He played in 25 games as a sophomore last season and averaged 3.3 points and 2.4 rebounds in 10.5 minutes.

I was thinking about this and I realized I have no clue what the answer would be. Sullinger has the potential to be the best post scorer at OSU since...?? He definitely looks to be a more natural post scorer than Oden/Koufos/Mullens.
