2010-2011 Men's Basketball (Outright Big Ten & BTT Champs)

Well, we've got a pretty favorable schedule preseason with every game except two basically at home. Its those road games though that I'm very interested in.

At Florida on Tuesday. At Florida State on Nov 30th. If we make it through those two, we'll be undefeated heading into conference play. That sound fantastic to me.

Just wanted to say that I'll be doing my part here in Gainesville next Tuesday. Just picked up my tickets this past Tuesday night.

Anyone else in North Central Florida gonna be around for the game or am I on my own? :oh:

It will be interesting to see how the lineups go starting tonight and into the season when we start playing stiffer competition. Will Matta try to match up with the opposing team using Lauderdale and Sullinger at the same time or will he play more of Craft and Sullinger or just try and spread the minutes between the three of them. There are also some other players such as Thomas and Smith that could get involved as the season wears on. An interesting dilemma for Thad.

OSU men's basketball: Big lineup gets limited use

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

It is a luxury for coach Thad Matta to be able to push the buttons he can now and not have to wear the handcuffs he did last season, when he often felt he had no choice but to play three players nearly every minute of a game.

Matta had nine healthy bodies at his disposal Sunday for the Ohio State men's basketball team's exhibition against Walsh, and he played all nine at least 12 minutes.

He could have 10 available tonight for the season opener against North Carolina A&T in Value City Arena.

Although having all those options is great for stamina, it can be too much of a good thing and foster a false sense of security.

Case in point: the much-anticipated "big lineup" Matta started Sunday featuring 6-foot-9 forward Jared Sullinger and 6-8 center Dallas Lauderdale.

They combined for 34 points and 17 rebounds. But in retrospect, they played in tandem for only two rotations - the first in each half - and were on the court together for the most underwhelming segment of the afternoon: the first five minutes of the game, when Walsh scored 10 points against a porous Ohio State defense.

Matta pulled Lauderdale at that point, and for the rest of the game, save for the first four minutes of the second half, the big men subbed for each other and the Buckeyes played conventionally, with a smaller, more perimeter-oriented power forward.

"It becomes a grudge match in some ways," Matta said of having to weigh which lineup to play at given times. "'Are we good enough on one end to make them pay (more than they make us pay on the other)?' That's the question that constantly goes through your mind, the risk and the reward."

Probably a few Gator fans are gonna be there, so most likely you won't be on your own.

Do you think the freshmen this year are better or will be considered better than the Oden/Conley class?

I do think the team itself will do much better against Florida tuesday night than what happened during the regular season for the 06/07 team. But being honest it will be hard to do much worse.

Go Bucks !!!

I think this group has an excellent chance to be considered much better than the Oden group.

Other than Conley none of that class played to their potential.

Don't get me wrong, Oden was a beast. But he was dinged all season and only showed what he could really do down the stretch. Cook was inconsistent and Lighty was no great shakes as a Frosh.

But the real advantage this class has is that in 2005 OSU was replacing 4 starters. And the one starter they did return (Butler) was almost redundant with Conley.

This group not only joins a team that was ready to hit the ground running (Lighty is still here), but their skill sets complement that team extremely well.

Without Craft the argument might be difficult to make - but if he continues to show the talent already evidenced this class could be head and shoulders above 05/06.

This team has the potential to be the best OSU team I have seen since the first class I can remember - way back in 1960.

More talented? Not a chance. The Oden/Conley class is the most talented freshman class I've seen at any university not identified as UCLA.

More accomplished? A very good chance - especially if either Deshaun Thomas or Jared Sullinger elects to stay more than one year.

Pregame notes on Big Sully, Pryor, Ross, Amir, Tyus

Coach Thad Matta and seniors Jon Diebler and David Lighty met with the media today before they practiced in the Schottenstein Center. They were scheduled to fly to Florida after practice.

But first, some news:

Jared Sullinger was named Big Ten freshman of the week after finishing with 19 points and 14 rebounds in Friday night's season-opening romp past North Carolina A&T. He is the first Ohio State true freshman to post a double-double in scoring and rebounding in his first game since Herb Williams had 34 points and 10 rebounds in his 1977 debut.

Shout out to the Columbus City League here. Sullinger (Northland) and Williams (Marion-Franklin) were products.

- Today was the first we'd had a chance to interview Lighty since Terrelle Pryor's infamous tweet to him last week -- asking Lighty to ask Matta if Pryor can come out for the basketball team after football season. So I asked Lighty if he thinks the quarterback is serious.

"He was a good player, especially coming out of high school," Lighty said. "I played against him in AAU and things like that.

"I think we can find a spot for him. I think coach Matta probably wouldn?t mind that at all. (He could) give up a couple fouls for us and play a little defense."

But Dave, do you think Pryor is serious?

"I don?t think (football coach Jim) Tressel will let him," Lighty said, "so it probably wouldn?t matter."

But Tressel reportedly said on Dan Patrick's syndicated radio show last week that he wouldn't stand in Pryor's way.

"Yeah," Lighty said, "until he really, actually tries it."

Haven't gotten on the BBall forums recently, but wanted to come on here and give a shout out Gene Smith and his decision to move the students around. The house was louder than usual for a sub par opponent in NC A&T. The students really help create the atmosphere that has been lacking. The Big Ten season should be insane.

Whatever you may think of this team and how good they are right now remember one thing. Thad Matta is a very good basketball coach.

He is just getting started with this team.
amen. many think he's just a recruiter and lacks the Xs and Os. what i saw tonight was a coach who made great halftime adjustments. we saw it a lot last year, too. we were a second half team last season. matta must be credited for that.
