Ohio State finishes in the top five for seventh time in a decade, tied for best in the nation


The Buckeyes are now tied with USC for the most top-five finishes in the last decade. Here's the list of teams with multiple top-five finishes since 2001:
7 Ohio State
7 USC
5 Texas
4 Florida
4 Oklahoma
3 Miami
3 LSU
2 Auburn
2 Oregon
2 Utah
2 Boise State
2 Georgia
Ohio State won the national title in 2002; finished No. 4 in 2003; No. 4 in 2005; No. 2 in 2006 after losing the national title game; No. 5 in 2007 after losing the national title game; No. 5 in 2009 and No. 5 this year.
Wisconsin, which beat Ohio State during the regular season but finished 11-2 after losing to TCU in the Rose Bowl, dropped from No. 4 to No. 7 in the final rankings. Michigan State, after getting blown out by Alabama in the Capital One Bowl, finished at 11-2 and fell from No. 7 to No. 14. No other Big Ten teams finished in the top 25.

Anyone see that the lowest two votes in the media poll came from:

Chris Fowler

Herbie, meh, I have mixed feelings. His job is to be as objective as possible, but it seems like at times he takes it so far that he is overly harsh on the Bucks. Fowler, on the other hand, has NO business getting a vote as he is the champion of the Non AQ teams. Think about it, he lobbies for them like no tomorrow, every other fucking word is "Boise" this and "TCU" that and "Nevada" this. He's as bad as the worst B10/SEC homer, and he's an idiot.

Herbie and Fowler's tOSU ranking makes no sense at all. If you're going to base our ranking on our loss to Wisconsin then how the hell do you justify ranking Wisconsin ahead of us when A) MSU was smoked by Alabama and B) they LOST their BCS bowl while we won ours? Thankfully the rest of the media isn't as dumb.

I think it's beyond objective ranking us 9th in the country.

Here is a list of all AQ teams that finished with a 12-1 record and a BCS bowl victory, along with their final poll rankings (AP/CP):

1993 Florida State... 1 / 1
1996 Florida......... 1 / 1
2003 Southern Cal.... 1 / 2
1978 Southern Cal.... 2 / 1
1989 Notre Dame...... 2 / 3
2008 Southern Cal.... 3 / 2
1999 Nebraska........ 3 / 2
1982 Nebraska........ 3 / 3
2008 Texas........... 4 / 3

So on four separate occasions, a 12-1 record and a BCS bowl victory was good enough to earn a team a national championship, and the lowest AP ranking for such a team was 7th. The average AP ranking was 3.2

Finally here is a list of all AQ teams that finished with a 12-1 record and a bowl loss, along with their final poll rankings (AP/CP):

2004 Oklahoma........ 3 / 3
2010 Oregon.......... 3 / 3
2009 Texas Christian. 6 / 6 (non-AQ team)

So, in the entire history of the AP poll (1936-present), no AQ team with a 12-1 record has finished below 8th place in the final poll ... and the team that did finish 8th (2009 Cincinnati) was an overrated Big East team that got hammered in their bowl game. The average AP ranking for all 12-1 teams was 3.7

But Fowler and Herbstreit think that Ohio State (12-1, Sugar Bowl winner) deserved to be ranked 9th? Worse than that joke of a Cincinnati team from last year? Six spots lower than the average 12-1 BCS bowl winner? That the 2010 Ohio State Buckeyes were essentially the worst 12-1 AQ team of all time?

Granted, every year is different, and not all 12-1 teams are created equal, but simply put, there is no historical basis or justification for their rankings. None. It was purely a "political" vote, nothing more, nothing less.

Of the three I find myself agreeing more with the BCS poll than the other two mostly because I don't think the loser in the NCG should go lower than #2.

I have no issue with TCU at three. They completely outplayed a one loss Big 10 Champ -- till someone starts beating TCU and BSU in OOC or bowl games you have to honor their claim of parity.

The closeness of the vote indicates that others weren't sure how to call this either. If Wisconsin had stomped TCU it would have clarified the issue. If OSU had scored ten points instead of three in the second half. Lots of 'ifs' and so I have to go back to head-to-head and that game was a blowout by the end of the first quarter, down to one score, and then Wisconsin dominated at the end.

I tried to find the 2011 poll thread and couldn't so I glommed onto what was at hand, the 2010 Poll.


Wrong poll or not it still reflected how I saw things at the end of the year in slots 1 - 10.

Oh, and yeah, Doh!
