Folanator

Brawndo's got electrolytes...
You all know by now that the TDF is my favorite sporting event of the year. Here is a brief preview...

The route

Running from Saturday July 3rd to Sunday July 25th 2010, the 97th Tour de France will be made up of 1 prologue and 20 stages and will cover a total distance of 3,600 kilometres.

These stages have the following profiles:
  • 1 prologue,
  • 9 flat stages,
  • 6 mountain stages and 3 summit finishes,
  • 4 medium mountain stages,
  • 1 individual time-trial stage (51 km).
Distinctive aspects of the race

  • le Tourmalet climbed twice,
  • a hint of the Classics and cobblestones,
  • 2 rest days,
  • 23 level 1, level 2 and highest level mountain passes.
The new team Radio Shack with Lance. Garmin is the other big US team.

I love the tour myself - especially now that they are broadcasting in HD. (I even watched the tour of California last week.)

I do have one question that perhaps an expert like yourself can answer.

There are feeding stations along the route where the riders are offered bags of goodies.

Do those bags include steroids, or can the elite riders complete an entire stage without a boost?

Brief preview of all the stages. 4 days and counting...tick tock tick tock.

TDF Stages

The stages that I am looking towards are:

Stage 3 with the cobblestones (think riding over rocks in the shape of a loaf of bread)
Stage 16 is going to be EPIC
The long TT

It's a great looking layout. Hard climbing and beaucoup Mountain top finishes. Long Time Trial. Should be a good one.

My picks:

1) Andy Schleck
2) Alberto Contador
3) Andreas Kloden
4) Levi Leipheimer
5) Lance

Prudhomme confident 2010 Tour de France will be tightly controlled

Tour de France race organiser Christian Prudhomme knows that there are no guarantees, but he is feeling confident that the current measures in place mean that the 2010 Tour de France should be a very clean event.

?I am convinced that there is a real breakthrough,? he told AFP. ?Controls, the biological passport, sanctions... Those who cheat can be convicted of doping by conventional radar at the roadside [standard doping tests] or by the biological passport. Without it being a 100 percent guarantee, it is definitely a bonus compared with what there was before.?

More about doping controlls...

Tour de France: Armstrong says he?s ready, close to best form

Armstrong_Lance_lux10st1ss1b.jpg

With a matter of days to go before the start of the Tour de France, seven time winner Lance Armstrong has given an indication that he is close to his best form. He did his traditional pre-Tour test on Monday and was satisfied with the outcome, indicating that it compared favourably with the best markers laid down in the past.

?Last hard ride before the TdF,? he said on Twitter. ?Test on the Col de la Madone. Record time? No. Close to it? Yes. I'm ready.?

Stage by stage descriptions of this years race....

Sportsmail...

Be aware that the Radio Shack team is very strong. So Kloden and Lance both have a shot at the top spot. Levi has a good shot at a podium finish. They will see who is riding well and then Bruneil will go with who can beat Contadore and Schleck.

The race is WIDE open, so it will be fun to see the big teams line up on the base of the climbs and try to kill each other.

Also, becasue these guys are drug free for the most part, it eliminates the long sustained efforts. THAT is what drugs did, allowed them to go off the front and hammer away for a long period of time up a mountain. Now, they can jump and get a gap, but they cannot maintain it for more than a minute or two. It compresses the race and keeps them close. Kinda like the NASCAR rules.
