2011 SEC Football Discussion

"Anyone who doesn't win their conference has no business playing in the National Championship Game." -Nick Saban 2003

I'm about 99% sure that quote is fake.

We were in the BCS CG that year, so there was no reason for Nicky to comment on Oklahoma.
Pete Carroll may have said something similar, but I don't remember Saban going that route.

I was just looking at the Sagarin rankings and was surprised to see who it says the clear cut number one conference is:

(central mean / simple average)
1) B12 - 84.89/84.01
2) SEC - 80.21/80.87
3) P12 - 75.80/76.42
4) B10 - 75.66/75.05
5) ACC - 72.18/72.00

3-4 points is a pretty big spread in these rankings.

Using the "predictor", rankings by team are:
SEC....B12
..1.......3
..2.......4
.13......11
.15......12
.19......14
.33......23
.35......24
.38......48
.54......60
.63......109
.94
115

If you tossed out the top and the bottom (or the middle two) SEC teams and matched up the rest 1-10, Sagarin rankings say B12 would win 8 out of 10 on a neutral field.

Read it as SEC/Big 10 matchups, not SEC/Big 12....but those would be

LSU vs Oklahoma St
Bama vs Oklahoma
Arkansas vs Kansas St
Georgia vs Baylor
South Carolina vs Missouri
Auburn vs Texas
Florida vs Texas A&M
Vandy vs Iowa St
Miss St vs Texas Tech
Kentucky vs Kansas

Even on a neutral field, the SEC is head and shoulders ahead of the Big 12

That Georgia v Baylor game could go either way imo. That would be one hell of a game

I think Vandy might get Iowa state in that matchup. They are much improved this year.
