2011 tOSU Recruiting Discussion

Rivals $ - Whispers: Can Buckeyes bounce back in 2011?
by Mike Farrell of Rivals.com Football Recruiting

Farrell believes Ohio State could be getting commitments soon from Nick Vannett & DerJuan Gambrell... He believes the following have Ohio State as their clear leader: Shane Wynn, Ron Tanner, Cardale Jones, Michael Bennett, Aundrey Walker, & Chase Farris... Finally, he suggests the Bucks have as good a shot as anyone of landing Braxton Miller, Doran Grant, & Trey Depriest

I hope we have a better shot at landing Miller or Grant. When I look at Braxton and Cardale, I still think Cardale has a much higher ceiling. I wouldn't mind have two back-to-back 6'5 QBs that can run. I am a little turned off by the fact that Braxton is taking so much time. He is the one recruit that could really get this class rolling. If he is truly torn, I understand waiting, but if he is just wanting to "go through the process" then why not verbal to OSU and take visits later?

At QB, I hope the staff takes 2 players. I don't like the idea of putting all your eggs in one basket. Injuries, slow development, or outside causes are not rare. If I had a choice between taking Braxton Miller or getting Cole Stout and Cardale Jones, I would take option 2 hands down. Of course, the best possible scenario is to land Braxton Miller and either Cardale Jones or Cole Stoudt.

Jones is well aware of the situation and will be patient...I would only be ok with Jones in the case that we get a more developed QB to come in with him. I know Jones does have a ton of potential, but he is also VERY raw and is a project. On that token, Miller still has an extremely high ceiling and has hardly played the position. Miller is a more complete package and dynamic threat, while still having plenty of room to grow.

As for the staff, they know whats going on with Miller as well. He very well may get the ball rolling in this class behind the scenes, as HotMic and I have both been saying. I would put money down on this class being a completely different animal than in '10 in terms of approach and producing a majority of early committments.

I'm surprised by the Vannett comment. That would be great news.

Can't land Jones unless they offer. Hope the cat and mouse doesn't go on too much longer. I do not see Randall ending up at OSU he seems to want the Dennis Dixon/Pat White role...

While I do not see him ending up at Ohio State either, he is not a Pat white or Dennis Dixon type of Qb either. He is much furhter along as a passer, right now.

He very well may be but he likes that type of offense it seems. However, just don't see him at OSU very small chance. Braxton is the main piece of the puzzel and it will help a lot once the staff can put his piece on the board or not.

I don't know if its me or something, but why does it seem like most of the guys we're recruiting at DB are Safeties(D Grant, Gorman, Lyons, Gembrell, Tanner, Cash, Aiken, etc.)? Are we in need that bad at the S position, or are the guys we're looking at that versatile that they can play either?

Are you basing this on recruiting site profiles? Don't get too hung up on what's listed on those pages. The position & favorites are not very reliable. For instance, Scott McVey is not a MLB despite scout's peculiar listing.

Grant was the best corner prospect in Ohio last year regardless of class.
Gambrell is very versatile and could help at corner, safety or wideout.
Cash is more likely to end up at Star like Jermale Hines, but could help at safety as well.
Gorman can play both CB & S.
Lyons is likely a safety.
I haven't followed Aiken very closely.

This is a bit off topic, but does anyone else get the impression that Lane Kiffin and his staff sit around all day on rivals or scout and mail out a new offer to every player that the other powerhouse programs send an offer to?

It seems like USC has an offer out to almost every single player Ohio State has offered at this point, don't know if that is based on fact or not, but it definitely seems like it.

I was basing it on the recruiting sites and reading info on this site. It just seemed like we have few true CBs on our radar, more kids seem projected as S. What about Tanner and Hardy, both S or as versatile as the others mentioned? And is the purpose of the staff to go after kids who are more versatile instead of projecting at one position?

Grant & Gambrell make for a fine CB class and OSU has a large lead for both. Land those two and they are sitting pretty at CB.

OSU has a greater need at safety than CB, where they have a lot of talented bodies backing up the veteran starters. On the other hand, safety is a big question mark after Hines. Orhian? CJ? Another youngster?
And is the purpose of the staff to go after kids who are more versatile instead of projecting at one position?
Tressel has always craved versatile players who can help him on special teams, move between CB, S & WR as needs arrive (Gonzo, Ginn, Gamble, Everett, Coleman), a few can slide down to OLB like Cie Grant.

Hardy is probably only a safety for OSU.
Tanner is athletic enough to play elsewhere but excels at safety.

Just look at the versatility in last year's DB haul:

Bryant - undersized for safety, but has tremendous versatility. Even punted a little :p
Reed - safety? star? quarterback?
Roby - special athlete at CB & WR. Huge steal that late in the game (as Bama/UGA tried to do as well).
Hagan - likely headed to star or LB.

This is a lengthy piece about Notre Dame recruiting but there are a few items that may be of interest to Ohio State fans. Oh and someone needs to get a squeegee for Touchdown Jesus. I think Lemming slobbered all of him. People in the South might be interested in some of his comments as well...

Notre Dame football: All news is good for Irish
March 11. 2010 6:59AM
By ERIC HANSEN

...
Where does one go to find a top defensive end?
Since ND's last national title season (1988), Texas (55) and Florida (55) high schools have produced the most ends drafted into the NFL, with California third (48). That falls pretty much in line with all positions drafted during that time frame (1. California 745, 2. Texas 624, 3. Florida 583).

South Carolina (21), Ohio (19) and New York (13) ? the latter one of the least-fertile recruiting areas overall ? produce a disproportionally high number of defensive ends.

Where are the best states for Notre Dame to go recruiting for all positions?
Beyond the big three ? California, Texas and Florida, which makes up 88 of Rivals.com's 250 top prospects for 2011 ? it's Georgia, Ohio, Louisiana, Virginia, Pennsylvania, North Carolina and Alabama from a pure volume standpoint.

From a per capita view, though, it's 1. Louisiana, 2. Mississippi, 3. Alabama, 4. South Carolina, 5. Florida, 6. Georgia, 7. Hawaii, 8. Texas, 9. Nebraska, 10. Virginia.
...
Do Kelly's ties to Cincinnati do him any good at Notre Dame?
In Ohio, they sure do. And several of his assistants have roots in Ohio.

Already quarterback Braxton Miller of Huber Heights, Ohio (6-2, 185, 4.47 in the 40-yard dash) has the Irish near the top of his cumbersomely long list of colleges.

"Ohio was a state the staff was able to get a lot of offers out early to, because they knew the players," Lemming said. "And it's a state with a lot of great players.

"Ohio has been good to Notre Dame at different times in its football history. Kelly may be able to kick that door a little wider."
