2012-13 Men's Basketball (B1G Tourney Champs, NCAA Elite Eight)

The Big Ten will release the results of its preseason poll at media day Thursday in Chicago, but, per tradition, it will release only the top three teams receiving votes so the other nine don't get their feelings hurt.

As a result, it's also become tradition for some of the writers who cover Big Ten teams to compile their own poll and list how all 12 teams fared in the voting.

Twenty-four writers, two from each beat, cast their ballots over the past week.

Here are the results, with first-place votes in parentheses and total points:

1. Indiana (21) 285
2. Michigan (3) 256
3. Ohio State 237
4. Michigan St 223
5. Wisconsin 191
6. Minnesota 159
7. Iowa 134
8. Purdue 121
9. Illinois 90
10. Northwestern 89
11. Penn State 62
12. Nebraska 25

I'll be in the lower section with my son watching the Buckeyes play the Kangaroos on 11/23. I live in Virginia so getting up to Columbus for a "real" game isn't possible. A glorified exhibition is the best I can do.

But you're so much closer for the Duke game

Thad Matta needed to hear only four words to finish the question for the person asking it.

?The annual question is ? ? the inquisitor began.

?How many guys are you going to play?? the Ohio State men?s basketball coach said.

?I think we?ve got more depth,? Matta answered.
The real answer remains to be seen, and although the Buckeyes? exhibition opener tonight against Walsh could yield some hints, the depth of the lineup could be ever-changing the next two months as Matta decides how many players he?ll go to war with when the Big Ten schedule begins.

How many play is only one question begging an answer, though, as the nation?s fourth-ranked team tips off its 2012-13 season. How fast the Buckeyes play is another, and how much pressure they apply on defense to trigger that transition offense is a third.

Tonight ?probably won?t be the prettiest thing in the world,? Matta said before practice yesterday, ?but I?m kind of interested to see how everyone plays.?

Sophomores Sam Thompson and Amir Williams are expected to be the newcomers to the starting lineup, joining juniors Aaron Craft, Lenzelle Smith Jr. and Deshaun Thomas.

But the talk since last season ended is that Matta, who has earned a reputation for playing his starters heavy minutes, will go deeper into his bench to facilitate a faster pace set by a stable of athletic, long-limbed players. Matta said he has six or seven lineups in mind.

Smith said he doesn?t know who will play how much, ?but if we?re going to play the way (we want to) and give the hustle we should give, it shouldn?t be ?Thad having to play (a certain number).? It?s going to be guys pulling on their jersey asking to come out. Guys don?t want to come out of the game, but that won?t be a factor when they can?t breathe.?

The team?s offseason conditioning program this past summer, more so than in the past, prepared the players to sustain a high tempo longer, Smith said.

Pomeroy must not be reading the papers. Wisconsin has lost their starting PG (Gasser) for the year with a torn ACL and it happened about a week ago.

His ranking actually does factor in losing Gasser.

@kenpomeroy How much did Josh Gasser's injury affect Wisconsin's projections?
8:40 AM - 1 Nov 12

@BBeNike Not much. Were 5th either way. Slightly better numbers with him.

2. Ohio State: The Buckeyes have arguably the best offensive player in the country and the best defensive player in the country at separate positions. Sure, perhaps the complementary parts are unproven, and maybe losing Jared Sullinger will cause the house of cards to collapse. But I think the Buckeyes have a reasonable shot at being the best defense in the land. (The ugly showing against Walsh gives me a teensy bit of concern, though.) If the offense is reasonably competent, watch out.
Sleep lost: 3 minutes, writing ?Kentucky? and ?Ohio State? into championship game of 2013 tourney bracket.

I'm surprised Gasser's injury didn't drop Wisconsin more. He's been rounding into a pretty good player. It's going to be on the shoulders of George Marshall (a RS freshman) and Sam Dekker (a true freshman). There's a lot of uncertainty about how those guys will fill in, although Dekker is supposed to be a special player.

Ohio State coach Thad Matta and his Marquette counterpart, Buzz Williams, were in unfamiliar territory after their basketball teams? season-opening game outdoors was canceled because of a wet court.

?I?ve never had a (postgame) press conference where you didn?t win or lose,? Williams said Friday night after recurring condensation on the floor atop the flight deck of the USS Yorktown in Mount Pleasant, S.C., made conditions unsafe for the players to compete in the second annual Carrier Classic.

?The emotion and the opportunity to play in this venue, on this stage, is over,? Williams said, ?and we have to refocus for what we?re doing on Sunday (against Colgate), and the preparation leading up to that.?

Ohio State also has its home opener this afternoon. The Buckeyes will take on Albany in Value City Arena in the opening round of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame Tip-Off Tournament.

?I haven?t even thought about what I?m going to do in practice yet,? Matta said. ?I was planning on resting, (but now) do we get after it tomorrow? We don?t even know what time we?re practicing. We?re waiting to see what time we get home.?

The Buckeyes? men?s and women?s teams returned to Columbus later Friday night on a chartered jet, landing shortly after 12:30 a.m. yesterday.

The starting lineup Matta put on the court against Marquette was different than he went with in his team?s exhibition game against Walsh on Oct. 30. Sam Thompson started instead of LaQuinton Ross on the wing, and Evan Ravenel instead of Amir Williams at center.

?I was going with the five most experienced players we have,? Matta said, because playing on the Yorktown ?was such a unique (setting)? and he felt those five could best handle the variables such as wind. He said it was windy enough during practice on the flight deck Thursday that shots were being blown off line.
