How's the team look so far this year, Wade?

Dangerously thin due to injuries and this being the final spring quarter at OSU. Players trying to jam in as many hours as possible. Lost a starting flanker to an internship, lost a starting lock to a 9-week suspension and lost our other starting flanker and captain to an injury.

Played well for 60 minutes at PSU this past weekend. Unfortunately PSU wanted to play all 80 minutes. Went from 22-17 to 60-17 in what seemed like the blink of an eye.

We are in the middle of the standings in the East. A win against Navy and a win against Delaware with some bonus points sprinkled in (bonus points awarded for 4+ tries scored) would go along way towards sending Coach Rooney off on a high note. Unfortunately with two teams at 4-0 [Army and Penn State] and one at 3-1 [Kutztown], making the playoffs this season does not seem likely.

Big recruiting week for us with a couple of highly touted prep players visiting. Wish I could borrow some of Pantoni's magic this week.

Rooney to Retire from Coaching OSU

The Ohio State Rugby team will wrap up their home D1A season this Saturday taking on the 10th-ranked United States Naval Academy, and in what will be Tom Rooney's last home game as Buckeyes Head Coach.

Rooney has led the Ohio State team for over 20 years. Considered a legend in Columbus, Rooney was originally a wrestler at Ohio State. He started playing rugby in 1978 and later joined the Columbus Rugby Club, becoming captain in 1986.

An injury forced him to quit playing and redirect his talents to coaching in 1992, and he has coached Ohio State ever since, claiming five Midwest RFU Championships and six trips to the national Round of 16.

Rooney has coached 21 rugby players to All-American and helped produce four Eagles.

Taking over the program will be Ron Bowers, who is currently an assistant with Ohio State.

Bowers played for the Buckeyes 1987-1991, earning All American honors in 1991, while helping the Buckeyes to back-to-back national semifinal appearances in 1990 and 1991.

Bower then played for the local Scioto Valley Rugby Club and was elected into their hall of fame in 2009. While playing for Scioto Valley, Ron represented the Midwest select side from 1992 to 2004. Bowers then joined the Ohio State coaching staff upon retiring from the playing field and is currently the head coach of the Midwest Collegiate All Star team as well as the OSU 7s team, which played in the USA 7s CRC in 2010 and 2011.

He served as the backs coach for the All American team that toured New Zealand in 2005.

I will let Wes break some good news here, but per multiple social media sites there might be a change to the location of Tom Rooney's last home game.

Mods: Please move to the Rumor page since this is from Twitter and Facebook, if needed.

Yes, the game has been moved to 6:30PM at our regular field. We owe a debt of gratitude to the Quid...

I couldn't even finish that sentence.

Tom Rooney steps away from Ohio State rugby after more than 20 years - Sports - The Lantern

In his final home game as coach of the Ohio State rugby team, Tom Rooney's team displayed the toughness and rigidness of the coach's more than 20-year career.

The Buckeyes lost to 10th-ranked United States Naval Academy, 22-18, on Saturday in a tightly contested and physical game. The night was more significant than the final score as the game served as a celebration and remembrance of Rooney's career.

Sophomore scrumhalf Luke Hickey said the team will miss Rooney's charisma and presence.

"You know when he's on the field because he's always chirping in your ear, helping you out and telling you what to do," Hickey said.

Many in Columbus consider Rooney a Buckeye legend because of his resume. He was originally a wrestler at OSU and then played for the Columbus rugby team Scioto Valley RFC in 1982 where he was elected captain of the team. An injury forced him to redirect his focus on coaching in 1992 as an assistant with OSU. Rugby is not a Division I sport at OSU, but Rooney still made his presence known.

Not sure how Moeller & St Eds turned out..

Tri-Village (Hilliard, UA, Grandview) went down in a hard fought game 5-3. Had a few opportunities to go ahead, on a break away mid way through the 2nd half, the official missed a pretty bad obstruction as our wing got tripped chasing the ball down (this wing, Trabue, is one of the faster players I've ever seen play live).. the ref was older, I'd assume that's why he wasn't able to keep pace most of the game and it cost Tri-Village on that play.. having said that, the ref was not the reason the game was lost.. their pack came to play, ours did not. Their pack was more physical all game and was able to win the ball pack at a few critical points. Tri-Village should have been kicking more too, from where I was standing.

I really don't understand why the game was played at Mifflin on a football field. I believe the field was about 15 meters narrower than what they had played on all season. Why they would use this field, and not use a rugby field makes zero sense. tOSU's rugby fields, Crew Stadium, Park of Roses, and Rhodes Park would of all made much more sense.. I thought it was a little unfair to the players who have been practicing and playing on full sized fields most of the year to get handcuffed.. really neutralized Tri-Villages speed.

Rumor has it, Bowers wanted the game to be at Mifflin as they're trying to get an inner-city 7's team put together. I hope that politics weren't involved in why this was the location. Beyond making the players change their game up and screwing with what they've been taught to do all year long.. seems rather short-sighted.. how many guys from Mifflin can get into Ohio State with their academic requirements? I mean, 3.5 gpa students from Hilliard Darby are getting turned down. I would think it would have made much more sense to get.. say Dublin involved (game at Coffman would have been much better than playing in the 43219).. Worthington and Watterson no longer have rugby clubs either.. Disappointing to see the Cleveland and Cincinnati area grow as Columbus loses teams.

All of that said, didn't see any games this year at the high school level played that closely, 5-3 was a helluva contest.. time for summer 7's.

You should have let me know you would be there. I spent most of the game in the press box.

As commissioner of Columbus HS rugby I can answer:

A) St. Ed's won 10-7 but it was one of the most exciting finishes to a rugby game I've ever seen. Ed's scored during injury time in the corner to make it 7-5 and their kicker hit one off the far post that dropped in to tie the game. Moved on to two 5 min OTs. Ed's converted a penalty at the end of the first period. Moeller had a penalty attempt with no time left to end the second period, which was missed...Ed's wins.

B) There were absolutely no politics involved. Ron did the research that was asked to find a central Ohio location but in the end, any decisions like that are made by the competitions committee at Rugby Ohio. It is very hard to find a location that meets all of Rugby Ohio's requirements for a tournament location and alll in all, everyone was very please with Mifflin, despite the fact it was a narrow field. And I'd like to comment on the ref from that game but I really shouldn't.

Watterson will be back next year. Licking Valley was a new 15s team in Columbus this year. We hope to have new 15s teams in Dublin and Worthington soon, but they will all have sevens teams this year. Columbus is growing just like Cleveland and Cincinnati.

Bowers and I went to a Tri-Village practice two weeks ago. I told Tommy exactly what could get his team into trouble during the tournament...and it was exactly what showed up on Friday night.

It is club at OSU as it is at most places. However we are working on transitioning into the athletics department as a non-varsity athletics program.

New Mrs Rugby is a pretty great/lucky gal.
