Just think, they've won 13 in a row without Iginla and Douglas Murray. 12 in a row without Morrow. They're considerably better now than they were two days ago when they were already the best team in hockey. I'm so happy right now. I'm going to be up all night.

That's the scary part. They've also done all of that pretty much without Malkin & Letang as well. Sucks to be a fan of any Eastern Conference team now, let alone anyone wishing to win the West either. I wouldn't exactly hand them the Cup quite yet, but wow, that's a ridiculously good lineup when everyone gets healthy.

Yup. When Malkin comes back, Neal will be good again. He's been invisible without Malkin. The Pens are winning because of one line right now.

Can't wait to see this. I'm more excited about this than I was when the Pens traded for Hossa. I think there's a better chance of Iginla re-signing in Pittsburgh.

Malkin & Neal are still missing that third component that Kunitz was for them last season. Kunitz & Crosby have been excellent together as well as Dupuis, but I'm thinking that Bylsma will probably put Igina on the first line with those two & drop Dupuis down. What firepower that line would be. I'll be curious if that's there move & who they would put with Malkin & Neal, because they really haven't found that guy this season, which could turn out to be Morrow, because he's strictly a LW. I know Dupuis can play there too, but he's better on the right from what I've seen.

They said they got Morrow to use as a second or third line player. He'll get the chance to play with Malkin & Neal, and if that doesn't work, I'd imagine they'll try Dupuis. If that doesn't work.. well, Bennett has looked solid. I think Morrow will be fine though. Big guy who will be physical and go to the front of the net. That's what Kunitz did on that line last year when it was the best line in hockey.

Figured I would give this a bump for the start of the playoffs. Looking at the first round Western Conference matchups:

I think Chicago will have an easy time with Minnesota. Outside of their first line & pairing, Minnesota doesn't really have much to contend with the 'Hawks, who are easily the deepest team in the league. Chicago gets scoring from everyone it seems & Minnesota's only foundation lies with Parise, Koivu & Suter. Cullen & Setoguchi had a nice little run a few weeks ago, but Cullen got hurt & production from anyone but those top three guys has been pretty much nonexistent ever since. Minnesota limped into the playoffs & Chicago will be too much to handle for them Verdict: Chicago in five. Minnesota will steal one, but I don't think this will be that entertaining of a series.

Anaheim and Detroit poses a unique pairing. They only played three times & each team has dismantled one another once, but Detroit beat them in there house twice on a back-to-back. Wings are playing the best hockey they've played all season as they secured the #7 seed & got the best possible matchup they could've drawn considering where they were before the end of season run. Anaheim was playing remarkably well several weeks ago, but didn't exactly finish the season on the same note that Detroit did. Anaheim is the better team, but if Detroit can continue this momentum they've been building the past few weeks, I wouldn't be surprised to see them win this. That being said, Detroit have a lot of question marks on defense & a plethora of playoff inexperience. They are the epitome of a boom or bust team in the first round. Verdict: Anaheim in seven. They're the better team & Detroit still has a lot of question marks going into this series.

Vancouver and San Jose is easily the best opening round matchup in the West. Both teams finished the season not scoring a lot, although the defenses & goaltending were superb from both teams. Vancouver has found a nice 2nd line to the Sedins & Burrows with Roy, Kesler & Hansen but will that be enough ? San Jose loves the physical game & Vancouver doesn't. It's a real finesse versus power matchup that I think favors San Jose more in a playoff type of atmosphere. That being said, San Jose are perennial underachievers. They always have one of the best on paper teams in the league, yet always find a way to blow it. Keep in mind that San Jose won all three matchups against Vancouver this season though. Verdict: San Jose in six. This could go either way, but I don't think San Jose will have much trouble frustrating a finesse team like Vancouver even with home ice advantage.

L.A. has absolutely owned St. Louis going back to last seasons playoffs, where they swept the Blues. They won all three games against them in the regular season this year, but didn't finish the season very well. They're still the defending Stanley Cup Champions, so you can't take them for granted. St. Louis has been all over the place this season. They started off very well, but quickly tanked when numerous players went down with injury. Word has it that Oshie will be reactivated from IR for the opener tomorrow night & they're going to need him. St. Louis ended the year playing pretty well, but L.A. has there number. Verdict: L.A. in five. Too much firepower for a team like St. Louis, that doesn't score very much.

Eastern Conference first round:

Isles and Pens. Pittsburgh won four of five matchups against them this year & the Islanders have a pretty suspect back line as well as goaltending. Great story to see the Islanders make it back into the playoffs, but they couldn't have gotten a worse matchup in the first round. Even without Crosby, Pittsburgh still have the most offensive firepower of any team in the league. This one won't go more than five games in a best case scenario for the Isles. Verdict: Pittsburgh in four. Too much to handle for a team with literally no playoff experience and that relies heavily on powerplay production.

Habs and Sens poses another interesting #2 vs. #7 series. Both teams split the series 2-2, with each winning there respective home games. Montreal didn't exactly finish the season on a hot note & Carey Price was downright terrible at the end, but still took home the #2 seed. Ottawa really showed a lot of character in not completely collapsing when there best two players (Karlsson & Spezza) went down with essentially regular season ending injuries very early in the season. Karlsson is back, which gives them a huge boost, but Spezza isn't close to a return from what I've deciphered. They struggled mightily to score without those two, but there defense has been pretty good all season, not to mention Craig Anderson played as good as anyone in net did all season. Montreal has one of the best PP's in the game & just has more firepower on offense at there disposal. Seeing as how both teams went undefeated against the other at home & they're Canadian teams, this will be a hotly contested and very competitive series. Even with Cary Price's struggles at the end of the season, Montreal is a better team. Verdict: Montreal in six. I don't think either team will win this series in less than six games. Habs have a lot more offensive capabilities, but Ottawa will play them extremely tough.

Rangers & Capitals series is pretty much impossible to decipher. Both teams were extremely streaky throughout the season. Washington went on a torrid run to win there division despite the atrocious start, but were still capable of horrible here & there. New York was all over the place all season & never really put a good stretch of games together like Washington did. Only difference being that Washington has been pretty poor on defense and in net all season, while New York has been great at both at times. Washington finished the season playing great, while New York pretty much limped there way into the playoffs. Nobody finished the season playing better than Ovechkin did as he took home his third Rocket Richard trophy home. Given how both teams finished the season, I'd give the edge to Washington, but they have a lot of question marks on defense and in net. This series could go anyway & it wouldn't surprise me. Should be a good one. Verdict: Washington in seven. Much more capable team on offense despite the defensive frailties. New York was inconsistent throughout the entire season & that will probably plague them again.

Boston & Toronto should be another hard fought series. Both teams absolutely despise one another & there's the Phil Kessel angle. Boston might be the toughest team in the league physically wise, but Toronto is one of the best scoring teams. What plagues Toronto is that James Reimer is playoff untested & there defense has been very inconsistent for them all season. Boston finished the season awfully as they lost at home on the final day of the season to fall out of 2nd & into fourth. They're as good as any team in the league, but are prone to struggling on offense. They have one of the best defenses in the league, but the lack of offense at times could hurt them mightily. They're a team built to perform in the playoffs & Toronto hasn't been here since '04, so the experience they have in this atmosphere could payoff huge. Verdict: Boston in six. Playoff tested team that isn't afraid of anybody. Tremendous defense that can stop anyone, but Toronto is capable of giving them trouble.

Feel free to add anything to that guys, although I know many of you are Columbus fans & probably don't give one [Mark May] about the playoffs. I'll see if I can get a playoff predictor thing going before the puck drops on the first game tomorrow night if anyone is interested.

I'm always excited about the playoffs and actually have a rooting interest as I was a Pens fan growing up before moving to Columbus and losing touch with the game. Once the Blue Jackets came to town I got into hockey again and have been a bummed out CBJ fan ever since.

Oh, and I'll be rooting for whoever is playing the Wings.

Go Ducks.

Tonight's results:

Los Angeles Kings 1 @ St. Louis Blues 2. Alexander Steen with a magnificent performance getting the opener & the shorthanded game-winner in OT courtesy of a complete brain fart by Quick behind his net. Justin Williams tied the game at one a piece with just 32 seconds left in the third, but that wasn't enough. St. Louis had just committed a double minor & not even a minute into the four-minute powerplay, Quick had gone behind his net to handle a dump in & waited too long to pass it, before Steen had closed in on him and got a piece of it. He simply put away the give me shorthander & St. Louis took a 1-0 series lead. Game 2 will be Thursday night at 9:30 pm ET in St. Louis on CNBC.

Minnesota Wild 1 @ Chicago Blackhawks 2. Very entertaining game from start to finish. Minnesota were unlucky before the game even started as Nicklas Backstrom went down with an injury in warm-ups leaving them without there starting goalie. They got on the board first & didn't seem scared of Chicago one bit. Chicago answered back through Hossa on the PP early in the 2nd, but neither team really seemed in control as there was a lot of back-and-forth play. Chicago got a nice winner in OT courtesy of some nice work by Oduya to get the puck up and over Suter to Stalberg, who did wonderfully to set up Bickell for the one-on-one and he finished it exquisitely. Just a tremendous goal all around & Chicago take a 1-0 lead in the series. Game 2 will be Friday night at 9:30 pm ET in Chicago on NBC Sports Network.

Detroit Red Wings 1 @ Anaheim Ducks 3. This game continued the trend of the first two games, with the home team taking the opener. Anaheim set the physical pace early & never let up throughout. Ducks got an opener on the PP halfway through the first courtesy of a nice Bonino deflection off Fowler's shot from the point. Detroit answered back with a scrappy PP goal of there own from Cleary. Anaheim was the better team throughout & Selanne, who's made a living of owning the Wings in the playoffs got the go-ahead & eventual game winner on the PP through a screen by a Detroit player on Howard. Beauchemin added an empty net goal insurance goal late in the game after some nice work by Getzlaf to beat his man to the puck after a faceoff scramble. Anaheim got a much deserved win & take a 1-0 series lead. Game 2 will be Thursday night at 10:00 pm in Anaheim on NBC Sports Network.
