2013 Preseason and regular polls

Obviously you're kidding, but the first part about Alabama not being #1 is actually silly. Any team who's won 3 out of the last 4 NC, while also raking in top 5 recruiting classes, and also returns their senior 3 year starting QB, should be #1. OSU should be #2.

Agree. I'm not a fan of the "easiest road" argument either. Until beaten and beaten soundly, and it'd probably have to happen more than once, I think Alabama deserves the title of best team in the country. They're 49-5 over the last four years, and three of those five losses were by a FG or less, another by five points to Johnny Football. They've essentially had one bad game in four years (2010 USCe), conversely known as the only good game Stephen Garcia ever played.

Whole-heartedly agree with Alabama being deserving of the #1 ranking. But, I think they're a tad more vulnerable than some may think. They should've lost the SECCG against Georgia (they were saved by a massive clusterfuck of end-of-game clock management by UGA), and were outplayed overall in their win at LSU. I can see them losing two games this year and "settling" for a non-NCG BCS bowl.

I was joking that 8 SEC teams TRULY belong in the Top 10. I was also joking about whether I put any merit in this, or any other preseason ranking. I could give 14 hoots who the #1 team is, Ohio State or otherwise. However, if I had to care, I'd say that Alabama should be #1, as far as the best team goes. But they also have a tougher schedule (in my IMO) and have a bigger target on their backs. Ohio State has the easier road to the BCS NCG. Based on that, maybe they deserve to be #1.

Meh - again... 14 hoots.

hoot, hoot, hoot, hoot, hoot, hoot, hoot, hoot, hoot, hoot, hoot, hoot, hoot, hoot!

Didn't want to read back through the entire thread but wanted to post that which many others might (or might not) be thinking in regards to starting out #1 in the polls.

My argument as to why preseason polls can absolutely matter.

1) Whether we deserve it or not (which I agree that Bama deserves it for now)...I'd MUCH rather start out #1 than #4 for example and have three unbeatens at the end of the season and an 11-1 SEC champ to contend with for the BCS game. Even when it comes to a playoff, I'd still rather have the 1 seed if the scenario were similar. Also this gives you a "buffer ranking" in the event that your team gets leap-frogged due to a narrow victory or something of the like.

2) It's always good to remember that the higher you start off - once you've lost, the more likely it becomes that you can creep your way back into the NC picture. It's not rocket science, but I'd rather fall from 1 to 5 and be able to get back into the hunt than from 4 to 9 per se and likely be out of it.

3) Last year is a great example of why this can matter. At the end of the season, due to winning a lot of close games and having a relatively soft schedule, we might've been eeked out by the Domers and Bama for the NC. Mind you, there were a lot of dynamics that went into the final polls, but if you want to talk straight wire-to-wire, that one slot can easily be the difference.

4) Lastly, being #1 or #2 doesn't make you any more or less likely to lose than being #4, 5 or 6. People say it's too much pressure but I think most (especially ex-players from quality programs) would agree, if you're a true competitor with a winning coach, when you're out there, you're not worried about "oh no, our #1 ranking". You're worried about winning every game period. If someone chokes as soon as they get in the #1 spotlight (ORE/KSU last year), then that's likely just bad timing.

Start us as high as you like, we'll have to win them all (or all but one) to get to the big show regardless. Obviously the "better starting ranking philosophy" applies down the board because when the CFS playoff starts, it could be the difference between the #4 seed for example (IN) or the #5 (OUT).

To be fair to Schlabach, he did say:

No doubt that Alabama is the most talented team in the country...the question is whether they will be the best team and will they make it to the NCG.

That's strange, I always assumed the college polls were all about who the best team is... not who has the easiest path to the NCG. Guess I was mistaken... :shake:

But then again, if the poll was about the easiest path to the NCG, there should be NO SEC teams in the top 10.

NO SEC teams in the top 10.

Putting those words so close together in a sentence:
Isn't there some grammatical error in there somewhere? What's the number for the grammar police?

ANY type of Top 10 list should have at least 4 SEC teams. Even if it's as low as 4, be prepared to feel the wrath of Paul Finebaum and his cohorts.

No, SEC teams in the top 10.

I think I corrected it properly.

Kinda cool. But also stupid. Did 2 guys take turns writing alternating sentences? Especially for No. 1 Texas. (Is it too late to say "Spoiler alert"?)

Check this out:
There are too many schools in the state of Texas to even mention them all. With 12 FBS programs, Texas easily tops the list.

The very next sentence:
The reason they are No. 1 is not the amount of teams

So they say that Texas has so many teams that it's easy to pick them number 1. But then next they say that the reason isn't because they have so many teams.

The article may go on to explain other stuff, but I quit reading.

Yeah, you can make an argument that Ohio should be #1. They even state that the overall quality of teams in Ohio can't be beat... well, then why aren't they #1??? Although Texas is a football powerhouse state every year. Hard to argue.
