2013 tOSU Defense Discussion

You seem to be arguing for the sake of arguing. No one is saying the D is fine or that we don't need or want a good one.

So, it just doesn't work to have 2005 expectations of what a good defense looks like in 2013. The game has changed that dramatically - for better or for worse. So, you recalibrate your expectations, bring them up to date, or you will be a very frustrated fan.

Urb himself just expressed the same frustrations that I talked about. Take your issue up with him I guess. Here's the deal - our defensive stats against Cal were just a tad bit better than NW. I happen to think we have much more talent on our squad than Cal, much better history of success (especially defensively) and therefore I am simply not happy with being just a little better defensively than they were against the same opponent in the same stadium. NW is not considered to be in the NC hunt, we are. Saying I am arguing for argument's sake or I need to recalibrate? Gimme a break.

I think the coaches are as frustrated as I am at obvious mistakes. If I have to hear one more time the statistics about a hurry up offense I think I am going to puke. I simply don't see what in the heck that has to do with Roby trying to push a guy out of bounds instead of tackling. Please, enlighten me. How does a hurry up offense make Roby and Pitt Brown drop sure fire picks? How does a hurry up offense cause us to have 16 or so missed tackles? I just don't see it so let's agree to disagree. After being up 21 points in the first 6 minutes of the game, how do we get outscored 34-31 from that point? If you don't think these things need to be fixed if we want to win a championship you are mistaken. Recalibrate my rear end! Put away the excuses and bring back the bullets!!!!!

In all seriousness I really like where we sit compared to last year. I watched the Cal game again last night and I think a real argument can be made for Bosa being the best recruit in Urb's stint so far. What an absolute BEAST. This D Line will be in the top 3 next year - count on it. Maybe that's why I am so critical of the play of the back 7 - they need to match the effort of the front 4 because they are easily outshining the other position groups on D in my view.

I think the Wisconsin game will be a good test for the Defense as a whole but since they are more of a run oriented offense it will not challenge the back 7 as a team that likes to air it out. A true test of the defense will be when they play a team that has an offense that is good and likes to pass a lot.

I personally dont see the defense being lights out until our secondary becomes elite. Not just in their abilities but in their physical attributes as well. What I mean is all our dbs seem to be about 6 foot and 190 pounds by all means that's good size but not great. We seem to be going after kids now that are 6'2" 200-210 pounds anx are just as athletic. We can work on tackles all we want but it's hard to tackle someone running at full speed and they're bigger than you. Bottom line with more size in the secondary the easier tackling will get.

I mean I'm about the current size of our dbs (minus the athletic ability) and there just aren't many Winfields in football anymore. The bigger we get in the future the better ability we will have to defend the screens and more we will be able to come up in run support.

I love our defense but we just aren't the biggest in the back end. Shazier included which is why you see him bounce off of tacklers some plays. Just not the biggest defense.

With Carter and Farris stepping up to provide depth, Bosa's play at DE and the fact that Washington will be back for Wisky, I like our chances against their run game. I think that both Grant and Perry's strength is in stopping the run. Should be fun to watch.

GO BUCKS!

Will be interesting to see how this seemingly improved front 7 (I say this because of the LB play so far) will fare against the power run.

Nobody has the RB stable OSU has in the country IMO, but Wiscy's with Gordon and White (with an emerging Clement) is very close as far as top end talent. This is the stiffest ground game test we'll face and I'm certainly hoping Washington & Bennett are fully healthy for this one.

According to this article, tackling will be very important, because the WI backs are dodgy. Prior to reading this I might have though the keys were being big enough to avoid a WI runover and understanding the weird WI scheme.

Gordon ran for three touchdowns and 147 yards, James White added 145 yards and a 70-yard score, and the 24th-ranked Badgers opened Big Ten play by trampling over Purdue with a 41-10 win Saturday.

"They're just so dynamic, their ability to make people miss and they really kind of complement each other with the running styles, in my opinion," coach Gary Andersen said. ....

It's not like Purdue didn't know that Wisconsin would run the ball, though. It's as much a part of Badger football as students rocking to House of Pain's "Jump Around" between the third and fourth quarters, even with Andersen in his first year calling the shots in Madison. Statistically, Purdue seemed to be in decent shape coming into the game after holding its last two opponents to less than 100 yards rushing.
Instead, Gordon and White made the poor-tackling Boilermakers look silly.

Difference being the OSU DL will have an impact on the UW OL well beyond anything Purdue is capable of. Also they will (hopefully) walk the safties up, play tight man on the WR's and dare Satvie to keep up with the OSU offense by passing.

Look back at last year and ask yourself if you think the Wisky O is any better or if the OSU D is any worse this year. I say "no" pretty confidently to both.

2012 Wisky did run for 206 yds but only because they had 56 carries (3.7 ypc). The OSU offense is much improved. If they get out in front and keep the pressure on Wisky isn't going to be able to run 50+ times unless they are just trying to shorten a blowout.

Night game, at home, one dimensional offense....I can respect the obvious threat but I just can't get too worried about this one.

Its the night game on the road against a very different looking offense that might get this D shredded.

This game will come down to the Ohio State d-line playing on the Wisconsin side of the LOS. Get into those guards and backs blocking and make the running back try to avoid tacklers in the backfield and the LOS. Obviously wrapping up and gang tackling will be important as well, but if the d-line is truly disruptive to the Wisconsin blocking scheme, good things will follow.
